Episode 28 of Zyuranger, 'Great Upgrade! Clay Monsters' aired the day after.

Yikes, this "what episode aired on your birthday" discussion makes me feel ancient.
Bioman Episode 40, "Stolen Turbo," aired the day before I was born in November of 1984. |

To make all of you guys feel old, I was born 3 days after Gaoranger 4 and 3 days before Gaoranger Quest 5.

And that's a wrap on Megaranger. Well, except for the Mega vs Car movie, which I have never seen before.
Anyway, overall, the show was really good despite a few misteps. Girell was absolutely worthless and brought nothing to the show that couldn't have been done without him. On the other hand, the Neziranger arc was freaking awesome and the highlight of the show, I just wish they had done it a lot sooner in the series. Hell, it would have made a lot more sense to have them be the cause for the Mega Voyager upgrade. The stuff with Hineler was also great, but it was under utilized as we really should have got more insight into his backstory a lot sooner too. It would have added more to the relationship between him and Shiborena instead of being a last minute reveal. The ranger cast was done well, but once again blue and yellow got the short end of the stick. Shun had a really great episode at the beginning of the show with his mom and then when he lost his memory, but other than that, he didn't have much of a story. As for Chisato, she got a really terrible episode with her grandmother (was that the lady who played the aunt in Ryuki?) and that was about it. The majority of the development went to Miku, Kenta, and Kouichirou. I did like how they sparingly used Mega Silver, but there were a couple of situtations where it didn't make sense for him to not be around, especially since it was after Mega Voyager and Mega Winger were there. Finally, the mech battles got really boring after a while. This show really suffered from having to have a mech battle every episode (sans the premier Neziranger episode), especially since Galaxy Mega was introduced immediately. It is easily the second weakest entry of the 90s, but when compared to the other 39 series out there, it is a pretty strong entry regardless of its shortcomings. BTW, for the birthday episode, surprisingly, Megaranger's 16th episode aired on my birthday. Of course, that was in 1997, not in 1982. No episode aired on the day I was actually born on. |
Something in Megaranger that isn't brought up often is the acquisition of the Mega Voyager.
And the total beating the Galaxy Mega takes while they're doing so. I really found that scene super tense, not only seeing the Galaxy Mega get beaten so badly (Including impaled by a giant girder or something), but also the complete panic going on by the complete staff inside. It was a really well done moment. |
Yeah, that was definitely a great moment. There are a lot of excellent moments throughout the series that I feel this one truly would have benefitted from a lower episode count. I'm not really sure what determines the length of a series. Like, why was Kaku 53 episodes? Why were Oh and Car only 48? Why was Mega 51? Either way, Car felt like it was right for 48 episodes whereas Mega felt like it could have been the same. Sure, it is only 3 less episode, but sometimes that can be enough. At 48, Mega could have gotten rid of that pointless clip show episode and two other filler episodes that served no purpose.
Another thing I forgot to mention was that I loved the music despite some of it not being original to this series. |
