This is very important question for you guys, How come Super Sentai is NOT big as Kamen Rider in term of yours guys!
Sure Little Kids watch Super Sentai more than Kamen Rider but why Super Sentai is NOT big as Kamen Rider? Every there was a New Super Sentai Episode is out, Their Thread is very small compare to Kamen Rider Episode Thread. For Example, Zyuohger Episode 32 have 12 Replies while Kamen Rider Ex-Aid Episode 1 have 170 Replies. What is the problem with Super Sentai? Why they're NOT Must-Watched Show like Kamen Rider? |
I think people like the idea of a solo hero than a team of heroes. Not to mention the tone for Kamen Rider will feel a bit more serious compare to Super Sentai. I always find the older Rider shows more violent than the older Sentai shows in my opinion.
I also hear Kamen Rider does tend to sell more toys compare to Super Sentai. I think kids from 5-12 find the Kamen Riders to look cooler than the Rangers because Kamen Riders have more detail to them and will have armor on them while the Super Sentai rangers are pretty simple and plane looking. |
Beside that, Why recent Super Sentai is NOT popular as Old Sentai anymore?
Jetman, Carranger, Dekaranger, Gekiranger, Shinkenger and even Gokaiger are most popular Super Sentai show! but after Gokaiger, Most of recent Sentai show like Go-Busters, Kyoryuger, ToQger, Ninninger and even Zyuohger are NOT very popular compare to those show! But why Recent Super Sentai are NOT popular anymore? I think Super Sentai have become too formulaic. Toei never take a risk with Recent Super Sentai and they keep using a same old formula unlike they take a risk with Kamen Rider So what give? |
Gekiranger is actually one of the worst shows in both sales and ratings.
It is still greatness incarnate, though~ |

Mele was and still is the best villainess in super sentai since Flashman's Ley Nefel, the progression is not that bad, Gekichopper and Gekiviolet is awesome, and Rio is the baddest dude of them all and also did the black and gold justice since Kingranger. The suits were genius and was the best homage to Bruce Lee's tracksuit. And the Five Venoms reference? Priceless. |

I heard that Abarekiller's supposed to be a prototype yet much stronger, yet unlike literally every other example, apparently there's an explanation. What is said explanation? |
When it comes Toku heroes, I like solo heroes than ones in teams. I normally watch Kamen Rider and Ultraman over Super Sentai because I like the idea of a powerful solo hero that can fight monsters on their own.
|
I enjoy Kamen Rider more because the story is often a lot more investing and interesting.
However, I find myself watching more Sentai right now because it tends to be a lot more energetic than Kamen Rider. |
i love kamen rider and super sentai
kamen rider x is cool ic the talking dog is cool too |
Since coming on this board, my opinion on Super Sentai has changed. I'm still not a fan, like I am for the Kamen Rider franchise (I just like Kamen Rider, even the bad ones), but I'm understanding the charm people see in them. As such, I've dug up some old Oriental Cinema issues and picked up it's sister rag, Heroes on Film which, in the pre-internet days, were just about the only way to learn about this stuff outside of Metropolitan cities with a strong Japanese cultural influence.
Reading through these again (some date back to '94), it appears that what we generally acknowledge as Super Sentai tropes - the kiddie, silly, episodic stuff - was likely a reverse influence straight from Saban's ultra successful, lucrative Mighty Morphin Power Rangers! Though it's just speculation on writer Damon Foster*'s part, it does sound likely - he posits that, starting with (the then current) Choriki Sentai Ohranger, the villains ceased to be portrayed by Japanese actors, replaced by full suits - better to lipsynch English to a static monster face than to a person speaking Japanese. The fighting got a lot better than 80's Sentai due to Power Rangers' American shot fights being better than the Japanese standard at the time. Also, things just got simpler - episodic over serialized as to avoid the headache of cultural dissonance in the adaptation. Seems pretty spot on - you watch Jetman or Liveman compared to post-MMPR shows like Ohranger (or ToQger or Ninninger) - the former were on an equal footing with Kamen Rider Black in terms of melodrama. The latter seem very much the prodigy of Saban's merch minded kiddie bilking (nuthin' wrong with that!). Indeed, it seems like many American Sentai fans prefer a mirror to their nostalgic feelings for Power Rangers, not something wholly independent from it, so if it's pleasing children and adults - why mess with it? Of course, there's exceptions (the aforementioned Gobusters, the current Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger and others, I'm sure), but this sounds about right. *Okay, if you're thinking "I wanna read those mags" - caveat emptor! - It's an independent publisher who basically wrote whatever the hell he wanted to and that sometimes included casually sexist, racist, homophobic "humor" and other non-PC stuff that just won't fly anywhere these days other than Youtube comments and 4-chan. While I don't want to excuse his backward-ass speech, I can say that the ol' "It was a different time" was in effect, though - even then - people were calling him on his bullshit in the letter coll. If you can look past that, I have to say, these are pretty well researched for a bunch of karate guys in 90's California - including a few things that I haven't even seen on the web. |
But can we really count Jetman as something "Normal" for pre-Zyu series when it's already noted as being staunchly different from other Sentai as a whole?
I'm not discounting that change did occur, but even before MMPR hit the scene, Jetman was already markedly different. |
Alright, poor example! Wasn't aware that Jetman was that different. I mean, against 70's stuff, sure (although I've heard JAKQ is pretty 'serious business'), but other than that, didn't know. A Sentai nubile ovah heah!

I've got Jetman, but haven't watched it yet - Akibaranger (and this board) has definitely helped me see this stuff in the proper perspective.
"Combat Soap Opera". I like that - the "Combat" adjective. I gotta remember that for pitching - "It's a "Combat Comedy"! Ah, man, that's great... |

It is worth watching to see what they tried in order to be different. |
This is a WHAT-IF Question, I know they will NEVER made this but what if Toei decides to do A NEW Super Sentai show on Amazon Prime?
Again, This is WHAT-IF Question! Now just says this one will have 13 EPISODES and it longer than Television Super Sentai, What old Super Sentai they should give Amazons treatment to? I would says JAKQ because it wasn't memorable or beloved Super Sentai and it would be the easy Sentai to adapt since JAKQ doesn't have a Mecha fight. They would probably make the JAKQ Suit look Modern day suit while changing the JAKQ Group Amazons didn't have any mention of Geddon or Garanda Empire and even Original Amazon Rider! |
Probably Zyuranger, because Saban would help fund it so they can milk that particular cow even more.
[What I would like to see is Ohranger] |
I agree with the possibility of Ohranger. Just something around that 15 or maybe even 20 mark in the tone that Ohranger was originally planning to go for would be perfectly swell.
|
oh red got his powers before 1st ep

Super Sentai aside it was aimed to be a sci-fi spy action title so maybe dab a bit of Kingsman on ye olde super sentai with some modernizations. |
I can't believe this but - I actually agree with vin13ish on this.
I feel like JAQK would be a perfect candidate - it was a lot like Amazon in that it was a bit too grim for kids, hence it's rather obscure status. Surely, if it wasn't part of the Sentai Family Tree, it would be as forgotten as Red Tiger or Space Warriors. |

I know we're in a cultural moment where we're all screaming "light & bright" when it comes to super heroes, but damned if I wouldn't kill for a darker, more grown up take on Sentai. Maybe one day... |

Could Sentai change in the mid of 2020's ?
|

I'd say Zyuohger is on par with Gaoranger. It's not super-over-the-top-amazing, but it's a fun show with just the right "Sentai"-feeling to it. |
Super Sentai needs to take a page out of Kamen Rider's recent pages and embrace something more bizarro than usual. Like, the five senses or sushi or monsters or D&D or hip hop or MMA - y'know, something unexpected, but still within the color coded Sentai rules.

EXTREME SPORTS! "Skateboarding! Snowboarding! BMX! Surfing! Parkour! Competitive Eating!"
Anyway, it's Uchuu Sentai Kyuuranger rumor time!: "Kyuuranger's theme involves planets and technology as each Kyuuranger has the power of each planet. In short, expect a total of 9 heroes for this team. The core team is composed of Red, Blue, and Yellow, and each protect a planet. The team transforms using the NovaKyu Changer and new heroes will be revealed in pairs. Lastly, their spacecraft looks similar to the planets they protect and the main mecha looks like a UFO." Remember, as of now, these are just rumors! http://ukiyaseed.weebly.com/ukiyaseeds-other-blog/kyuuranger-rumors-planetary-heroes-ufo-mecha |

And no, that's not just joking, I recently translated an old interview in which Miss Takeuchi stated she was inspired by Goranger and Zyuranger to create a kind of all-girl-version of that. And the Toku is pretty damn close to that. |
