HearCatch 33-34: When Dark Precure out of all people has an "Oh Shit" look on her face you know things are way beyond serious.
This set of episodes were intense! Story wise there was great pay-off, the action was simply spectacular, and the emotional moments were genuinely emotional, it was amazing in every frigging sense. Also: Cologne! T_T Quote:

Apparently I'm the only one here who finds the Gamagoori scaling thing amazing. Its such an easy visual gag that Trigger play perfectly.
That, and Gamagoori's my second favourite character in the show anyway :lol |
Gamagoori is like the only "main" character I've seen enough of to really dislike.

The only character I can honestly say I dislike in that show is Tsumugu. I get why he's there but he bores me to tears.
Ryuko doesn't rank very highly with me either. As Satsuki becomes more and more awesome she just got less and less interesting. Quote:
As for last week's - man I did not see that coming. I kinda guessed there was something up with the girlfriend but I didn't expect straight man Goto to be the most messed up of them all. |
At the point I'm at, I like both of those characters. Especially Ryuuko, she is one of the best protagonists I've had the luxury of following around for a while. I'll be sad if what you say is true, and she gets over shadowed by Satsuki.

WOW. This show continues to impress with it's bizarreness. The will of the universe? This show is off the wall nuts. Love it.
The Prime minister going all Metal Hero/Saint Seiya was very awesome, but then you guys are totally right. The who took a zany Ultraman turn for sure. Really interested to see how things go now that we're back in a "normal" world. |
Honestly the explanation for all the craziness is the one thing I REALLY couldn't get behind. With Akibaranger at least it felt like there was method to the madness, but the Will of the Universe/why everything was called Flamenco felt like a MASSIVE cop out. It built up so much stuff to just suddenly hand wave it away with a really stupid joke. For a show I've been invested in for months it was pretty disappointing.
EDIT: Episode 20. Bromance. That is all. |
Kill la Kill 10.
This King of The Hill thing seemed so epic at first, but so far it's been so disappointing. I'm ten episodes in and Ryuuko has beaten three of the Four Devas already (almost got the Fourth in the same episode she beat the first one). It really is reminding me a lot of the utter disappointment of the Espada, although this show doesn't even have a Grimmjow... Between this shows complete lack of a tangible threat providing villain (other than Satsuki) and having a protagonist whose power is BEING OVERPOWERED, I've found these last few episodes really difficult to enjoy. I dunno the early episodes just seemed to craft the story better, and use what it had to better effect. It doesn't help that the quality of the animation is really dipping as well. |

Holy crap Kill La Kill is good!

You have to bear in mind Akibaranger was a show that was geared to Sentai nerds. On the other hand Samurai Flamenco at one point (not sure if it had it for the second half) had the "hottest" anime slot on Japanese television. When your show isn't primarily geared toward a certain audience you need to at least have things make coherent sense and not just rely on parody with no proper explanation. Do that and you get a show that's going to fail, and by the looks of it thats exactly what Samurai Flamenco is doing. I've enjoyed it up until that point and am enjoying the episodes that followed, but I can see now the show pretty much dug its own grave in terms of success/ratings. |
Kill la Kill 11.
How many forms has this Bandcamp Deva had? Is this really what they're pushed to just to give Ryuuko a challenge? BORING. Although not quite as lame as them reducing Sageyama to a total joke just to play up the introduction of a new character, what was the point of all the build up just to pull the rug? This new character doesn't even make sense, didn't Ryuuko pull the red scissor out of her Dad? What did this new chick leave half of it behind? Why? How? |
Dude, when it comes to Kill la Kill the best things to do when watching are:
1.) Don't expect anything conventional to be done with its story or pacing 2.) Don't question anything The show flows at its own pace and explains things as it goes. It's extremely hard to predict what will happen next and throws lots of curveball explanations at you, so you kind of have to watch it without comparing it to anything or expecting it to follow a formula. |
I guess I'm just sorta deflating a bit. The first seven or so episodes - minus episode four - were epic, gorgeously animated seeming love letters to my favourite shows. I was LOVING it, it was smart, maybe intentionally satirical and also gloriously silly.
But I've just found this King of The Hill arc really dull and with the asspull at the end of episode eleven it seemed to only cement my utter disappointment with this mini arc. I'm hoping with Satsuki's mother getting involved this means the show is gonna shift back into the high gear of awesome set by the stuff that came before this rubbish King of The Hill nonsense. HERE'S HOPING. |
So I've been following Chuunibyou Ren and this week's episode was the first that's actually caught my attention the full way through. That was a pretty heavy episode for such an inherently silly show.
|
Well, got caught up to Flamenco 19 & 20. Man poor Gotto. Never would have suspected that about him at all. Very strange indeed. As for this new arc that's begun, what the hell is wrong with Hazama? Is he really imagining this kid?
The universe told him that aliens and monsters and all the great villains he ever dreamed of fighting would never appear again. But the universe never said anything about regular human evil. And is Flamenco really the source of it? How did this kid attack the Flamengers and everyone else all at once if he isn't real? Crazy stuff yet again. |
So now I'm going to pick up Space Dandy and give it go. Was interested for a while and it's on Hulu anyway so why not?

I do enjoy what we're seeing now too. Again this show is the heaviest of parody/tributes. Seeing as tokus rarely give us the long aftermath of a heroes' battle against evil. this show is showing us how mundane that could be. Aside from extraordinary circumstances, or in this case the innate evil of humanity reasserting itself. It's very interesting indeed. |
HeartCatch Precure episode 4:
It was pretty good, but I feel like having Tsubomi already question their partnership was really weird, I think we should've gotten that probably in the next episode or two, or have this be a 2 episode arc, and the conversation the two tennis girls had at the end should've been between Tsubomi and Erika. So...I would give it a 7 out of 10. |
Kill la Kill 12.
This was a nice return to form, for a show that seemed to lose its way a bit. This episode returned it to the loving subversion of its genre that I always enjoyed it for. Plus, as ever, it introduced just enough interesting original ideas to keep its own sense of identity as it near on parodies so many other shows. |
I just cannot get into Space Dandy. I've watched the first six episodes so far and it just isn't working for me as there are no consequences for anyone's actions. Everything is reset by the next episode off screen.

If you can get behind the fact that there's no flowing story in Space Dandy, it has some really standout episodes that are great for different things. Episodes 4 and 7 are comedy highlights, episode 9 has been the best for art and then episode 5 is just flawless in every right (seriously, I thought episode 5 was brilliant and showed it can do more than just off the wall comedy). I think this is a show that really is best suited for watching weekly, because marathoning it you would begin to expect something more flowing. Right now the only lingering complaint about continuity I have is with Dr Gel and the Gogol Empire, because so far they haven't actually added ANYTHING to the show.
Anyway, Kill la Kill 22. I despise the phrase "feels" but man this episode had them. Since Ryuko's stopped being crazy she's gone back to being the protagonist I loved, while Satsuki/the Elite Four are just continuing to grow and grow. That apology scene coupled with the meal was just fantastic.. I think Satsuki has been my favourite character from a new show in a LONG time. If Figma were to go all out and do multiple versions of her (Uniform, Junketsu, Senketsu, Nudist Beach, Badass Trenchcoat), I'd happily buy them all. Really hope they do a Medicom of her now too. Spoiler tagged for Locke (and anyone else catching up)'s sake! |
Thanks for the tags Z. I'll be catching up to you soon!

Started watching Bleach again where I left off at episode 164... Good god I forgot how much I loved this show! :D
|
Zeo, I will agree that episode 4 of Space Dandy (the zombie one) was quite good, especially the first half when it felt and sounded like a classic John Carpenter movie.

I think the problem with Space Dandy is that because of Shinichiro Watanabe's earlier work we were all expecting some giant space-faring epic, while in reality it's like an old cartoon when story arcs weren't even something audiences thought about. |
squid girl on Netflix is so good. its funny and charming. too bad Netflix only has season 1. still need to watch the rest after watching it on Thursday and Friday. it is a great slice of life anime I think.

Like I said, you have to take Space Dandy as a show where no episodes are connected. Like a Looney Tunes cartoon or something. You say you don't mind it being episodic yet you're still expecting an overarching story. |
