Dairanger 23.
Back to Kujaku we go! I'm not complaining, Kujaku is like one of my favourite characters, and she always causes a lot of focus on Daigo the best of the Dairanger's but it does make the whole Akomaru arc feel like some elaborate piece of filler, just one giant meaningless detour. Hell with the way Kou wasn't even in this episode it feels like I'm watching the show out of order. I dunno how to feel about the whole pollution thing. I mean on the one hand, it is a cool idea to think about how different our world would have been 6,000 years ago and the effect it would have on our bodies but on the other, do we really need more super sentai green peace messages? Plus, what is with Daigo and Kujaku's melodramatic, Twilight like romance? They haven't established a single thing between these guys really, so Daigo suddenly making dramatic love declarations was almost as ridiculous as the monster of the week, Heatwave Hood. Their escape from Heatwave Hood though? So epic. |
ChouJuu Sentai Livemane subbed by GUIS, episode one.
So... Uh... Yea, that was weird? Yea, let's go with weird. Yuu, Megumi, and Joe are what you expect from early eighties/late 70's Sentai. Stiff movements and add syntax. YThey were good though. And they weren't the weirdness. Looking at you Miss ElbowCannon Dominatrix, Jawface, and Beast Cosplay. I enjoyed it though. Even if the story is a little Jetman before Jetman was a thing. |

I love this shows internal continuity, the way characters and plots will resurface to make it feel like a complete world. The mythology is pretty confusing, to be fair, but at least there is a sense of world building in play. I may not like Baseball, but with all the crazy powers and utter disregard for sportsmanship or rules, this match was as entertaining as it was utterly hilarious. Especially all the unexplained Engrish, although I still don't get why everyone dribbles over Lin. Shouji really annoyed me in this episode though. Why would he trust the Stooges over his own friends? Honestly, that kinda highlights one of my main issues with this show. I'm really REALLY enjoying Dairanger, but the Dairanger's themselves suck. Minus Daigo, basically none of them have had any real focus, and the show really only ever has them unmorphed and together when they are getting shouted at by Master Zordon or in the ten second end of episode sequence, after they've gone through the motions with their tacked on mech fight. I mean hell, just look at Kibaranger, who was completely absent from the last episode and just randomly turned up in the last few minutes of this one. I mean I'm happy this show is so focused on the stuff at hand, but seeing our heroes as people, seeing their friendships form and blossom is really important, and an odd thing to completely cut out, when there is so many other sentai clichés which could and should be removed that they chose to leave in, in the friendships absence. I'm half way through and the Dairanger's still don't feel like a team, just a bunch of strangers in palette swapped costumes. |

Go-Busters 32-33: The Gavan arc.
That was completely unnecessary, Gavan teaming up with the Gokaigers made sense, but Geki and the Go-Busters clashed, badly. Shelly was fun, but other than that having Gavan here was simply badly done advertisement for the movie. On the Go-Busters side Morishita gets more character development, and Enter reappears. Seems like the next set of episodes gets things back on track. |

A Kazu focused episode?! It will his second one in twenty five episodes! Where's Kazu the Dairanger's ask? The audience have been asking that question for the whole series... Evil Kazu kinda reminded me of Gremlin. How was the actual episode? Dumb. Evil Kazu wasted so many opportunities to complete his task, the Master continued to be unconvincing, the Copy Empress was ridiculous and not in a fun way, and it was so pathetic how the Dairanger's reacted when she pretended to be a Hollywood scout, you're meant to be heroes man! The evil Dairanger's were fun though, I wish more Sentai had teams of evil Rangers, something about the concept has always been really cool to me. Even though basically the only time we got that was with the Psycho Rangers who I basically remember nothing about. The evil Dairanger's functioned as more of a team than the real ones. Plus, although INSANELY dated, watching this alongside GARO really makes me appreciate the action. GARO is all CGI basically, so seeing the Dairanger's actually doing crazy stunts, and seeing so much of the fighting actually play out, with only the occasional bit of wirework or whatever just makes the fighting so damn enjoyable. |

The episode where a super powered martial arts assassin (darkness Karate lol) at one point goes after Kamen Rider Kuuga. Oh Japan, letting a guy murder people very violently and bloodily on screen in a kids show. And then the Dairanger's went on to fight a pot. And not the good kind. I love how Ryou seemed surprised at the idea of losing, considering every opponent Ryou faces, kicks his ass. He's spent more of the series laying on the floor covered in jam and mud than he has destroying monsters. Worst Red ever? He's certainly the worst sentai red I've come across so far, the Dairanger's are a bad bad bad team. Also, didn't Ryou have a fighting style up until this point? The pipe dude named it in the first episode but I can't remember what he called it. Well apparently the show forgot... But then, I guess so did I. That is what happens when the show puts nearly entirely zero focus on any of the characters, minus localised and fleeting sequences that are largely meaningless. Shouji is the bad boy, so he has no sleeves. Even though him, Daigo and Ryou have all basically become the same character across the show, just with varying degrees of usefulness. The action is still good, though. This episode sure was gory though. |
Goseiger 4: I don't know what changed between the last episode and this one, but I'm really liking these guys now, even Eri which was easily my least favorite has improved in this episode.
This episode introduces Datas (no opinion on him right now), Bura... Bura... Japanese Vrak proves he's a badass (man the villains have weird names), and a song fixes everything, I would complain about it being cheap or stupid, but they are angels, different set of logic. :p So yeah, I enjoyed it. :D |

Man this was a good episode! I can't wait to see Jin and Ryou's Round Two, after Ryou finally found some balls, grew into a badass and took that Red Ranger position by the horns. Jin's transformation was fucking cool as well. I must ask though, what is it with this show, and sucking people into things and trapping them there? |

Another Kazu focused episode? Whoa slow down there Dairanger, I'm pretty sure you only waited five episodes this time, not twenty. And to be fair the last Kazu 'focused' episode, actually had him off screen for most of it and his evil copy on screen instead, so I guess that doesn't count... Even this one wasn't much better, as it focused almost as much on Yellow Owl, as it did him, in many senses maybe more. So Kou is finally back in the show...and then they make up an excuse for him to not transform. Why include a sixth Ranger, give him a dedicated arc then do nothing with him? Also, man the Four Deva's sucked. |
I grabbed Battle Fever J and I'm going to start that this afternoon. I have an unhealthy appreciation for the pure 70s-ness of Battle Cossack's design and I'm looking forward to seeing it in action. SHF Battle Cossack please, Bandai!

Sentai eh? Hmm... I still haven't give up on Shinkenger! |
Episode 2 of Liveman. LiveRobo doesn't look that horrible, but alot of this show is really damn confusing and hard to follow. :eyebrow

I actually think the mecha of old, in all their cardboard glory, are actually kinda better. The flat, boxy designs meant there was less auxiliary shit sticking out and flapping around drawing attention to how cheap it all is.
I mean you would think after twenty years they'd finally have the technology to make the mech fights not look like a man in a cheap costume, on an even cheaper scaled set, but I kinda forgot that sentai hasn't really tried anything new for about fifteen years and whenever it does it meets such a scathing reaction we get another kid friendly series about dinosaurs. |

He wasn't classified as a hero until he was red, and no amount of headcanon will change that. |

Gekiranger changed how the stories were told, how the costumes were designed, how the mecha suits flowed, how the fights were handled, and had a unique narrative. But you write it off as laughable, disregard it, then continue to bitch about how everything is the same clownshoes kiddy bullshit because GoBusters failed. |

I dunno where you're getting this shit from though, bro, and there is no need to be nasty about it, either. I like sentai, I don't like the mech stuff granted, but I like sentai. And when you see how much Kamen Rider has grown, and is still growing, then compare it to sentai, the growth sentai has made in the last twenty years is weak at best. When did I write off Gekiranger? I've only seen a single episode, it wasn't for me because I didn't like the protagonist, but I can't judge the whole show on that single episode. I just have so much to watch right now, I have no real reason to continue with the series. But yah, I am disappointed GoBusters failed, then Kyoryuger turned out to be a smash because personally I think Kyoryuger is awful and I guess that is what we'll keep getting as it make them money. |
Kyoryuger 19-23
Not sure how I feel about it pulling a similar move to Go-busters, still, be interesting to see where the series heads from here. Plezuoh is just as awesome as I had hoped he would be on screen, and it was cool to see Daigo's dad sort of appear (still not sure if the others could see him or not) Oh, and as cool as the Dr.Ulshade stuff is, its also kind of annoying as I'm now trying to apply logic to everything else =p As for your little lovers tiff up there, I find it funny that you (Locke) constantly bring up budget for other shows and yet don't apply that logic here. Sure they can probably afford to make it look better but why bother if it sells? It also adds to the replicable and resell-able nature of the show, if it looks like a toy/costume is doing the action then kids are going to be more absorbed in the fantasy of it all. At the same time, the advancements in narrative style are as you said pretty much the same and one series (matrix) doesn't exactly show evolution in the franchise. |
When Daigo unlocks hi's battlelizer, the morph kind of ruins the mood.
