On a whim, I tried out some Ultraman for this first time with the first five episodes of Tiga! Tbh, I literally know jack shit about Ultra prior: there's a big silvery dude running around, blasting kaiju with a laser, or something like that, so I have 0 expectations. Some assorted thoughts:
-This show, is like eye candy at certain points? The backdrop sets they make for this show, theyre very lovely! The colors in thos show are very easy on the eyes, too! There's this scene where Daigo is walking out onto a bridge, and the way it's framed is so wonderful I had to stop and admire it? -As someone who really loved the G3 Team bits in Agito, absolutely tickled by how much of this is about GUTS trying to tackle the mystery/monster of the week. (Tiga can only do so much with that time limit...) I'm surprised at how much a well-oiled team they are, they're a great bunch! -Now don't laugh, but I suspect the reason I've been holding off on Ultra for a bit is that the big silvery guys themselves, theyre kinda....unerving to look at? A bit creepy. However, Tiga's body has a really pleasant design, and the odd noises it makes are bizzarely charming? I'll probably be fully won over by I reach the midpoint of the show. -The monsters, they're cool! I especially like the guy who looks like he's rotting from Episode 5, that's a real neat gimmick! It's a really interesting, even mysterious show so far, I'm having fun with it! |
The theme songs and artists for Decker have been revealed.
The Opening Theme, "Wake Up Decker!" will be performed by SCREEN mode. The Ending Theme, "Kanata Toku," will be performed by Hironobu Kageyama, who also sang Dyna's Ending Theme. |
Watched a few more episodes of Return of Ultraman for the last few days. Only 15 episodes to go. Also, I got my copy of Ultraman Mebius as well as the Superior 8 Ultra Brothers movie from Amazon just recently.

Several new things revealed in the PV. A new Guts ship named the Guts Hawk, which can combine with the Guts Falcon to become the Guts Griffon. Decker also has a weapon called the Ultra Dual Sword, its functions for now are being kept secret. Decker also seems like he's going to fight alongside kaiju such as Miclas

I have to say, I'm loving what I'm seeing, and it looks better than Trigger so far, whether it'll do better is yet to be seen, but I'm going to remain optimistic, but not keep expectations high.
Nice to see the Nurse Dessei again, and the Falcon combining with the new ship (which looks great, honestly) to form the GUTS Griffon looks fantastic! Decker's new sword looks so good! I'm curious what they're keeping a surprise, but so far, I love the design. We hear a bit of the opening and ending themes, the opening sounds reminiscent of Dyna's theme, which isn't too surprising, but Trigger's was nice, so I don't mind, while the ending, I like the sound of very much. I'll have to hear these more to get a feel, but not bad first impressions. That first Kaiju looks amazing, and Miclas fighting alongside Decker looks fun, nice to see him getting some love. Overall, I'm looking forward to this, the crew looks like it'll have a bit more focus than last time, according to some of the interviews with the cast (I love the robot), but I'm just hoping for an enjoyable show, something Trigger at least managed to keep up with, so I wouldn't mind terribly if it ends up being like Trigger. Still, initial impressions, looks good. |
I love the style and energy!

Wow. That actually looks like a weapon and is properly scaled to the Ultraman. That’s a rare combo.

Time for Ultraman Decker, New Generation Dyna (not that we're going to advertise that this time, since we saw how that ended for Trigger)! Although it's hard to disassociate Decker from Dyna both design-wise and because Sphere is back and more dangerous than ever.
Remember Mars? That piece of Triggers' setting they never really did much with? Well, now it's Sphere fodder. Whoops! Seems like part of the drive of the series will be fighting off Sphere and reaching Mars again. Especially since it's part of Kirino's motivation and Kanata's probably worried about his parents (I'm surprised they'e even alive). No better fit for an Ultra protagonist than a humble boy who works in the service industry and enjoys helping others while looking to the future. It's even in his name! Also Asuka's name, if you take the first letters of his last and first name together. I like the Opening. It's not as epic and hype as Pull the Trigger but it feels like your classical, upbeat, Ultra Opening and it's fun to listen to. It's neat to see the TPU shifting away from fighting monsters and being so militarized in a more peaceful world post-Trigger, shifting focus to space exploration, and the possible issues with slacking back from having an active GUTS-Select team or development on researching monsters. Especially when the Sphere's come a callin'. Also the future vice-captain was involved with monster research so I'm curious to see where they go with that. I like Murahoshi. He seems like a really coolheaded and chill guy but with a strong resolve and determination that you want in a guy in a command position. I wonder if he has some kind of history with Ultraman though, judging by his reactions. Might just be me. Kanata and Ichika's first meeting was cute, what with him trying to force some food on her. Maybe don't call a girl "rigid" though, Kanata... Ryumon feels like the new Akito, being too serious for his own good and starting off on the wrong foot with the Ultra host. Spheresaurus! Our first Sphere Kaiju! A really cool design, I liked the giant forward arms/legs. I...really don't want to know what the Sphere do with those people they consume. Although it didn't seem like Kanata was automatically killed before Decker showed up. Actual guns! Even Kanata grabs a machinegun and starts firing! And it's his guts (heh) and strong sense of self that draws Decker to Kanata. And from space to Earth, a new Ultraman is born. Asuka gets a pocket knife. Kanata gets a whole giant Ultra head blade. I want to see him and Gai compare cards. Decker had a pretty spectacular debut, smashing through the smaller Spheres and matching Spheresaurus blow for blow. I love it when an Ultra knocks the horn off of a kaiju. Also, that Ultra Beam was amazingly directed! Points to Decker for trying to single-handedly defeat the Sphere invasion but maybe not something to do when the timer's started and this is literally the first time you've done this. Will we see Kanata's grandpa again? I love Kanata's enthusiasm. I can imagine Haruki was a lot like him during his training with STORAGE. So I guess Decker can talk like Trigger, judging by the outro message from Decker. |
So first thoughts? I got really good feeling about Kanata in this episode energetic yet not too overbearing I knew the moment I saw him rush at the Sphere with a gun despite being a civillian in the trailer I knew I was going to like the dude. And I'm hoping to see his parents at some point in the series. Love the fact that he sctually he going to training school before joining GUTS-Select.
Setting alot of stuff up with the other side characters too with almost everybody introduce here but none of it felt too much or rushed you get a good sense of everyone personalties and a bit of their stories that has me looking forward to the rest of the series. And now let's talk about the main Ultra himself Decker so far I was surprised by how short the fight Spheresauras was but then the Sphere blocking the Earth gives the show so grander stakes and I was surprised to hear Decker himself talk even briefly since It hought they where going to stick with him being a silent Ultra. Was not expecting an Ultra Navi here. That only happens in season with Forms based off past Ultra's and Decker isn't one of those. It sucks that the OP and ED aren't subbed seems like they changed subbers |
Great premiere! Starting off on a great note, Decker!
I think it goes without saying, but I loved this episode. Unlike Trigger, better pacing, I already like Kanata, and just an overall good episode. I've gushed about Decker's design, but his sound effects are just something else, I love the Color Timer's chimes, and the device has some good sounds too, though I admit the voice isn't really my favorite. Now I may not have seen or know much anything about Dyna, so I apologize if I get any information wrong or something, but I like the premise this show's going for with the Sphere taking over the Earth right from the get-go. And gosh darn, is Spheresaurus a great looking Kaiju, already a favorite. Not only do we get to see the characters early on, but it looks like we're getting a training episode for the crew? Sign me up! Decker has really impressed me, and I hope it continues to do well. And for the songs? The opening has some elements of Dyna's, but overall, it's practically a completely new song, which I like a lot. The ending is also very nice. So far, I'm sold on the music! Nothing bad against Trigger, which yes, was a little underwhelming, but it was still enjoyable to watch from week to week, and that's more than I could ask from a show. But boy am I enjoying this. Next Episode: Do you got the guts to join GUTS Select? |

The theme song and unlike the show it is subbed! |
Love that the theme song MV is just a workout video.
That being said, I'm glad for being optimistic about things because Decker definitely hit the ground running in a good way! Where I was kind of worried about Trigger due to their heavy push of "New Generation Tiga" and just... everything about the first episode with the references feeling very forced in some ways in hindsight (I recently rewatched Episode 1), this one felt a lot more natural? Also didn't help that Trigger Episode 1 just... did not dispel any feelings of me being worried about if the show knew what it identity was (Which I can say with confidence... it really didn't in the end). Like I'm sure it's definitely borrowing various elements from Dyna, but it doesn't overstate them like Trigger did. It also seems to not want to rush things either as we aren't immediately going into GUTS-Select and Decker gets to let his main form breathe as the star of the episode for a bit given next time we seem to be stuck with standard Decker still, which is good! There's a certain way I'm hoping they'll handle form changes compared to Trigger but we'll get there when they start showing up. We get a nice piece of like most of our core cast (Really digging Kanata immediately out of the gate), and I like the idea that the TPC just went to downscale the military side the further in without monster attacks they went while focusing on space exploration. The idea that GUTS-Select doesn't exist anymore and most equipment is automated alongside a new generation that needs to be trained now should make bringing together the team a lot more interesting. Also man, Spheresaurus is a cool Kaiju. I love unorthodox Kaiju designs like it and Genegarg from Z. I wish we'd get more of those to be honest. |
what an incredible choice to go for the opening mv's theme
|
First episode is very by the book, nothing bad but nothing too exciting either.
Spheresaurus is an awesome monster suit though. |
So confirmation on Nexus/Next and Max DVD on their way I know people that are happy about this.

The tradeoff, then, is that we're also dealing with a first episode that basically commits no missteps whatsoever, though, so I'd feel bad if it sounds like I'm picking on it at all. Decker certainly seems like it'll be a great time as usual! |
did Decker lose on his first episode?
alien army vs one very tall dude |
He won the battle but he did not win the war.
