In Madoka Magica (also written by Urobuchi), Homura keeps on going back in time and everyone dies over and over again, so maybe AltMai is like Homura.

He hopped a rocket and got the hell out of Dodge when Invess took over the tower back around Episode 30. He the released all the info on what Yggdrasil was doing so that the other branches couldn't interfere.
