SPD is one of my favorite PR seasons out there, right behind Time Force and RPM.
|
I was really bored last night so I started browsing Netflix and decided "what the hell, let's watch some mystic force." Magiranger has always had my absolute favorite suits, so I mostly just wanted to see some random episodes to see them in action.
So. Of course, you know, I randomly picked out that one episode that was half black and white where no one ever transformed! Man. That sure was exciting. So I watched some other episode. The one where green GOT RIPPED. It was cool I guess. I think I'm just gonna watch Magiranger. |
I was bored just now and to avoid falling asleep I decided to watch the first episode of RPM. It was actually really good. It felt very cinematic. Very nice atmosphere. I like Dillon and Ziggy. Main team of three look a bit bland right now but I'll have to see more (also, kinda surprised Dillon isn't red, "amnesiac with a mysterious past" sounds like perfect lead fodder. He did also get most of the focus here...)
Anyway yeah, I'm gonna have to find time to watch more soon...somehow. |

since its now on netflix, i have started dino charge. I am exactly 1/3 of an episode in.
|
I'm up to episode 5 of RPM. Man, it is good. Dillon and especially Ziggy are still great. (Man, Ziggy is a riot). I'm growing to like Scott more somewhat, Flynn really isn't much of a character thus far but I do like his accent (and his smoothie angst was great) but man, Summer is still a bore. Anyway, plots thus far have been pretty fun, episode 5 is such a filler-ish feeling episode but it was hilarious and really plenty of important things happened. It may be my favorite so far, not sure. It's all pretty great. The part where that one crazy villain general was talking sass to the boss and got himself blasted was a real highlight.
Man, I wish they'd made some dang Go-onger figuarts. I want figures already. |
Decided to watch the first episode of Dino Charge out of curiosity, what with it being the currently airing series and all.
Man, first off, what in the fuck is that keeper thing supposed to be? Seriously. It's like ET and Nibbler had a baby. A really, really ugly baby. And then someone made a crappy puppet face of it out of monkey asses. What an ugly abomination this is. Also, what the hell. It's like they pulled their ideas of what dinosaurs looked like from the 80s. What is this? It's 2015 guys, study some paleontology. Also, the red dude took a selfie in portrait mode and the resulting image was in landscape. You can only push my suspension of disbelief so far, Power Rangers. The fight scene was pretty awesome, though. Even if it only lasted two seconds. Not enough. Anyway, the script was pretty goddamn painful. Pretty dreadful first impression all around, really. Man, I'm going back to RPM. Speaking of which, episode 6 is perfection through and through. Ziggy is just such a fun character. What did that one gifset call him? "A little shit with a heart of gold?" Never has something been so accurate. Man RPM is great. |

Anyway, episode 10 of RPM was great. We finally got to learn more about Flynn, and hey, turns out he's a pretty cool dude. It was a pretty nice episode overall. And the meta elements were hilarious. I love the fact that he weaponized the transformation explosion. Man. I love that. Scott's episode was pretty alright too. Didn't care for Summer's unfortunately. She was the only one that got a two parter and I was hoping I would grow to like her some more but I found the whole thing pretty weak. She's still pretty firmly my least favorite Ranger in this so far. |
Started watching Power Rangers Turbo today and man, I forgot how bad this series really is. First off, the movie is atrocious and makes no sense with the way Zeo ended. Secondly, they just give away the Zeo powers for car power. The only positive is it is pretty cool getting to see the RV Robo suit used in this.
With that said, the first 9 episodes are bad too. Divatox and her crew are just terrible villains. Zedd might have had his light hearted moments, but this is on a whole new level of dumbness. Another thing is the acting seems to have gotten pretty bad, even from the alumni members of the show. I still have no idea why they turned Bulk and Skull into monkeys either, but man does it suck. And why is Divatox always want to blow things up? I'm so tired of the detonator plot in every episode. |
I'm up to episode 20 of RPM. Still pretty good. It's been fun, barring that one horribly sexist line in episode 16 that just...??? I mean, whatever. I'm trying to get it to stop bothering me but it just blindsided me. I'm working through it.
The premise for episode 20 felt pretty contrived, anyway. The rangers kill monsters and save the city all the damn time, bringing medals into it at this point is...weird. Really goddamn weird. I mean yeah, Gem did beat that one monster solo, and that is impressive, but it still feels so random. Likewise, Scott acts like a real blockhead in this episode all around, it's also kind of weird. Doesn't feel like him, though then again he did acknowledge he was being stupid so eh. At least this episode gave Gem some good moments. Up to this point the twins have just felt too quirky and out there to really register as true characters, so seeing a more human side to Gem was nice. Hopefully Gemma gets something too. Hyperactive explosives enthusiasts isn't the most exciting characterization out there. |
Episode 21 of RPM was great. A Gemma and Flynn episode was pretty much all I wanted.
Episode 23 was pretty fun and interesting, actually. Though I do find it odd that in discussing how they make the show they didn't mention "oh yeah also we use a lot of footage from sentai?" Or suit actors at all (PR uses different suit actors, right?). Like, I thought that was gonna be the punchline at the end when they were watching all the footage they did and were going "hey yeah that's me." Thought someone was gonna drop a "wait i don't remember filming this." Oh well, I guess. Still pretty cool. |
RPM episode 27.
This one was weird. I feel like there was a lot of set up for the "Scott gets mind-controlled" plot for what ended up being pretty much literally no payoff. And Shifter met something of an unceremonious end. I mean yeah these latest episodes have been mainly about Tenaya, but still. Very busy episode, this. Also man, I can't stand this Kilobyte bastard. Dude's a creep. RPM is still pretty good overall. |
Started Dino Charge on Netflix. Pretty decent, pretty decent. I really don't have it in me to do a play by play for every episode, but it's worth watching, at the very least.
|
And now I've finished RPM.
It was good. This series had a lot of great characters, and a fairly good story. The tone is I think one of its strongest aspects. It had a serious story with serious stakes, but it never got into grimdark territory, which I really appreciated. It was a very fun show throughout, and the interactions between the team were always great. All in all a very well crafted show. It's definitely my favorite Power Rangers, and I'm not saying that just because it's the only one I've watched completely. Though I guess I am. Not that it was completely without flaws. I think the biggest one would be that while it had some characters that were very well developed and fleshed out, you also had like, the twins. There were definitely some characters that could have used more focus. I suppose it was inevitable, since RPM barely had some 30 episodes but still had a main cast of around 10 characters, but it's still a shame. Regardless, I guess, it still did a great job balancing the characters. It's not like I've watched a lot others, but I'm guessing this would be one of the last series one would bring up when talking about excessive red focus. But there's also the bad guys. I mean, the big bad Venjix was...I dunno, he was pretty bland. Just a vaguely evil AI and...that's pretty much all he was. Shifter was kind of interesting after his banishment, but as I mentioned a bit earlier he ended up getting knocked out prematurely in an unremarkable fashion. Crunch was never anything more than comic relief, which is not necessarily bad but not really good either. Kilobyte is the only general I think was really an interesting character. Sort of a love to hate type, though I mostly just hated him for being a bastard. Didn't dwell on the love a whole lot. While Tenaya...existed? I don't have a lot of opinions on Tenaya. Her and Dillon's story sort of hijacked much of the second half of the series, but it was just not as interesting as I would have liked. Her dilemmas were solved pretty quickly and it didn't end up mattering a lot in the end. As a whole the story was good, but she as a character isn't that intriguing to me. Anyway, pretty great show in any case. Man I want some figuarts... |
Suffered through episodes 10-27 of PR Turbo today. Good god this show is awful. The Carranger scenes, especially with the villain designs, just do not fit the tone of this show at all. I also can not stand how monotonous they turned Signalman into when they made him the Blue Centurion. They sucked out all bits of personality he had. The worst aspect though was changing the cast. It's bad enough they keep changing Divatox actors, but they just randomly out of the blue decide that their ranger cast need to leave and they don't even transition it well. They become rangers off screen and then we don't even see them be developed into their role, they're just perfect at it right from the get go. Not to mention Cassie never talks about her no longer moving to Stone Canyon and they act like they know who everyone is around them as if they have known them for years. It is so stupid. General Havok is pretty cool though, but everything that has been good in that arc is because of the Carranger footage. At least I have less than 20 episodes to go.

I think it's the worst PR season. I grew up on MF and OO so those have some redeemable characteristics, and haven't seen SS, Megaforce or SM so I can't comment. But I thought it was awful. And the irony is when Adam finally starts to break out of his shy shell of MMPR/Zeo, they remove him. Turbo2 at least did some things good, but by that time it was too late because Turbo1 was real bad. I started rewatching DT after 11 years, and it makes me filled with nostalgia and it's still as special as it was for me back then. |
I love Turbo. Probably the only series that doesn't get it's proper due.

I see the positives and negatives of each season, so I can see why you and other people liked Turbo. I mean I'll admit I liked a lot of Turbo2, but there were still some pieces that were a mess. But TJ is one of my favorite red rangers, and Cassie is one of my favorite Pink Rangers. I also do like Ashley, but not a big Carlos fan. I liked how they had a full season to themselves in In Space, but I'm in the minority that thinks IS is overrated, I mean it's still enjoyable and a good season, but I've seen better. |
I'm in the camp that thinks In Space is the best of the franchise. It concludes 7 years worth of story telling and does it in a big way.
Never really watched LSR-Wild Force though (nor have I seen JF and RPM), so when I finally watch them, my mind could change. Turbo though, my god this show is just terrible. Not only did it seem like they had no idea what to do with the rangers since they weren't in high school anymore, but they have clearly run out of things for Bulk and Skull to do. At this point it feels like they are in there because they are required to be so. |
I thought some really good stuff came out of IS to be honest, like the plot twist and the finale.
Your missing out on the LR-WF. I think Time Force is the best PR season, up there with Dino Thunder for me. Wild Force is also great, it's underrated in the fanbase. JF is really good too, and I've heard RPM's great. |
Watched the first two episodes of Dino Thunder. It wasn't bad. Serious cases of old-looking-teenagers and the most fake-ass dino CGI I've seen (too much cgi in general) but still pretty decent. Definitely better than Dino Charge.
The suits are pretty great on both sides. I guess I'd blame that on Abaranger more than Dino Thunder itself, but still a boon. Very cool villains they've got there. Didn't exactly hook me the way RPM did (the high school setting is like, seriously cramping my enthusiasm) but it's the only PR besides that one that has looked worthwhile so far. May check out the rest. |
I actually think DT is one of the greatest PR seasons ever. I may be biased because I grew up with it and looked up to the three of them, but it's still a great season.
|
I had a hard time getting into DT than most PRs, mainly because our protagonists just didn't interest me at all. They kind of felt like MMPR 10 years later with how it portrayed high schoolers (Though I'll give them that they were a hell of a lot closer).
For me, DT didn't hook me until Trent's story arc got moving. |
Yeah, I do agree that the DT rangers are a little cookie cutter in mold(Conner being the Jock, Ethan being the nerd, Kira being the Avri- yeah I'm not going to say it) but I really do like them. Kira's one of my favorite Yellow Rangers ever(Actually could be number 1, I really admired Dustin and her as a kid, and Maya later), Ethan's in my top 3 and Conner's one of my favorite reds.
It seems that people tend not to like the DT rangers unless you kinda grew up with the series from what I've read. |
A big problem is just that there isn't a lot of substance to the characters and both the overarching story and their personal stories are rather weak.
So it's easier for people who saw it originally to look back on it fondly and rewatch it and enjoy it, versus newcomers to just dive into it and have a hard time seeing all the charm. It handles things a lot better than Ninja Storm did, but kind of fumbled with a lot of similar problems, I felt. |
Mezogog was easily the best PR created villain since Astronema.
|
I'll respectfully disagree because Ransik happened.

My son and I began watching the original MMPR starting with season 1. We're 2 episodes into the five-parter where Tommy shows up.
I can see why kids thought he was a big deal back then. Up until now, the rangers never seemed to really deal with a major threat. This allowed the "silly" factor to weigh more heavily. But now, the rangers have an actual fight on their hands, where using the Megazord won't necessarily save the day. While there are still laughable moments, the stakes are a bit more higher...giving the series a temporary dark undertone. |
Oh yeah a day or so ago in the middle of the night (when the best Netflix decisions are made, obvs) I had a slight interest in checking out A Friend in Need. I didn't get past the first part. It was something.
Also watched the first episode of Jungle Fury because watching the first episode of random Power Rangers is a thing I'm doing now apparently. It was...alright? Jared dude was comically jerkish and uh...pizza. Cats. Shades. This episode had things. |
I watched Disc 4 to Turbo and my god this show just continues to be mediocre. Okay, I know this is not Carranger, this is Power Rangers, but the episode with the fight between the red ranger and the monster on the Turbo Megazord just isn't the same without Kyosuke's fiery attitude. TJ is just so monotone and a bland red ranger. In fact, the only one who seems to put any energy into his role is Justin's actor. Everyone else is just going through the motions. Oh, and seriously, the writers completely ran out of things for Bulk and Skull. I know I'm repeating myself, but my god, they have gone from kind hearted idiots to just being there because Saban was too afraid to move past them.
Thank the gods there is only one disc left. |
As much as I don't like Turbo, TJ's one of my favorite Reds ever. He just seems like a great, respectful kind guy who leads well. I liked him better than Tommy and Andros.
Another 2 of my favorite reds, Conner and Mack also don't get much love. Another thing I'll give the Turbo writers is Carranger was definitely not an easy season to adapt, but they could've embraced the more comedic tone earlier. |

Although, TJ's actor is at least better than Cassie's, who is easily the worst actor on the show. That girl couldn't make a true emotion if she tried. At least in Turbo, I don't remember if she got better in PRIS. |
I think you missed TJ's intro episode if you think he doesn't have any qualities deserving of being a leader.

So I just marathoned most of RPM today for the first time and I have to say I really enjoyed the show even if the twins started off as kinda annoying as heck. I think they hit a good balance with comedy and seriousness though and I really did enjoy the parts where the rangers were pointing out the ridiculous things like the giant explosions on morph or the fact that zords have eyes.
I did find the ending a little anti climatic with how the final blow hit Vengex and that the whole implication that Dillian's sister might loose her eye sight again at some point. Its almost like the universe is being a jerk. Going hey we know you went some serious trama being forced to become a cyborg and having your memories erased but at least you got your sight back in the end.....or the implants are quite possibly going to give out at any moment and poof goes vision again. |
About 30 episodes into MMPR. The last one I watched was "Calamity Kimberly". My 11-year-old son pointed out that they always give Tommy a reason to stay behind so he can bail the rest of the Rangers out, time and again. LOL!
|
Watched the episode where the Green Ranger is fighting to keep his powers while the green candle burns.
My 7-year-old daughter gasped when Kimberly and Tommy kissed. LOL! BTW, my daughter is wanting her own Dino Megazord or Dragonzord now....but she wants one that's in her price range. I tried to give her the Dino Charge 2-pack I recently picked up for cheap...but she's only wanting the MMPR stuff, unfortunately. |
