What about another homage to the past sentais like in Boukenger ?
|
When the time is right. We just had a 40th anniversary so maybe for year 45 or 50. It does not necessarily have to but I think homages are more fun in anniversary shows.
Here is my question folks. Which personal weapon of a Sentai hero do you think is the best? For example Tyrannoranger's ryugekiken, Shinken Gold's sakanamaru, etc. Personally I think Blue Turbo from Turboranger's J Gun is the best because he could attach their basic firearm the Turbo Laser to make it the J Machinegun for more firepower. |

Although they're very obviously toys, I really like the Gokai Sabres and Gokai Gun, with their cutlass and blunderbuss motifs, since they're about as pirate-appropriate as you can get. These aren't personal weapons, though. Although I consider most of the weapons in Zyuohger to be the worst among Super Sentai, Zyuoh Eagle's EagRiser one of the very best. It doesn't share the clunkiness of the guns, and while a chain sword would be impractical, it looks cool. |

I was gonna say Zyusoken but remembered watching Turboranger long time ago and really liked how Blue Turbo whipped out the J gun and attached his turbo laser and then just did a quick rapid fire strafe with it. |
Weapons eh?
Bull Riot is pretty sweet for being a freaking shotgun but loses points in the transformation because the entire barrel is just a sheath and that's a little lazy. I do also like the King Stick just for it's awesome sound effects, so very 90s Japan. |

King stick is a good choice too. |

I'm a sucker for a Red with a sword to begin with, and the whole gimmick of it also being a weird whip thing led to some pretty dynamic action. It's also a pretty simple and understated weapon for modern Sentai, which is nice. But then I adore Zyuoh Eagle, so I'm probably just biased to think anything relating to him is awesome. |
Favorite weapon?
Geki Nunchaku. If you guys love simple weapons, you'll love those. Literally just red nunchaku :lol Anyway, I'm particularly fond of the D-Sword Vega, pretty sweet. Zyuoh The Gunrod is also cool. I'm a sucker for polearms, and just plain staves are pretty rare since shows like this prefer to have them be bladed at the end. |

Which is also why I love Bouken Red because he managed to be grounded while having his moments of hilarity. Like this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etHgzlM1QyY But for real though, Yamato is one of the best red rangers we have had in a while. |

Got put one down for the Magna Defender's sword, which I'm pretty sure is Bull Riot in Gingaman. Also a fan of GaoSilver's weapon. It's not really much of anything, but it's kind of neat regardless.

Why don't we have a Brown ranger? It's a basic color that's easily recognizable and spottable (Even in their beloved rock quarry) and doesn't overlap or clash with any other colors commonly used.
I don't count ShinkenBrown because it was a dude in a sword training suit. Seriously, we've had Cyan, Grey, and we're about to get Sky Blue, but still no Brown? |
Probably because it's not a very appealing color and doesn't look great alongside too many others. This is the actual reasoning used by staff members throughout the years as to why certain color combos don't show up too often. I'd like to think the monster admonishing the future Kyoryuger team in 100 Years After was an in joke about that fact.
|
Might just be a case of being a color that's hard to make "cool."
There's not really a lot of brown superhero costumes in general for a reason. Sure, there are some, but it's definitely not a popular color. |
Yeah... the thought of brown spandex doesn't quite sit well with me, just on a visual level. Maybe if it were a tan or a sandier brown... but that's pretty close to Gold so would be redundant.
I could maybe see how brown could be used in the designs of another Western themed ranger? Maybe? There were brown elements on StarNinger, I guess. |

So maybe it would be a brown suit but with certain parts being in the designated color. |
What would be the central themes and/or degree of social commentary in any Tokusatsu? Kakuranger is considered by some sources as one based on social commentary, so there might be others. Flashman was a team formed from orphans, which was part of their drive through their series, which might be part of its message. What are other forms of commentary from other series?

I just don't think a solid brown ranger would look very heroic. It doesn't really pop. Think about it -- there aren't many brown-suited American super heroes either. (The closest I can think of is that one era of Wolverine.) |

Maybe brown just makes everything look like it's from the late 70s, early 80s. :lol |

Something of that nature. |
Should sentai have vehicles mechas again like the 80's ?

Sure there will be a few duds along the way but I say keep on truckin'. |
I think of Nite Owl and Crimson Fox when it comes to brown-outfitted superheroes, but I'm a DC fanboy. And most of the brown ones we're discussing (the two I mentioned, Wolverine, Vixen) have wild animal themes. Maybe if they do another animal sentai and there's a bear Ranger or owl Ranger they'll try brown?
Until then, all we have is SHINKENNNNN BROWN! |
Enlighten me, guys. I never quite got the fascination the western Toku fandom has with Shinken Brown. I hated that episode back when I first watched it and I'm still not into it these days.
|
It's just the humor over it. It's an Italian portraying an American Japanophile who wants to be a Samurai.
|
Just like how I consider Ryo the Taiyaki Master as god tier for the same reasons. :lolol
Then looking back Riders already have two brown riders in Imperor and Punchhopper. And Ghost's Billy the Kid form. |
Ohranger Robo is that bad ?

A few questions
How do I buy a copy of the Shout Factory subs? Can I order them online? If so, which are recommended to get? I'm struggling on deciding which sentai to watch first out of this bunch, Jetman, Deka ,Magi ,Go-Busters, Kyoru, ToQ, Bouken, Time or Gokai I didn't list the ones done by Shout as I'd rather save up and buy the DVDs |

Gokaiger's an extremely safe bet, though. |

Time isn't fully subbed or I would recommend it, so I'm going to suggest Jetman. Normally I would say Gokaiger, but one of the episodes does have a spoiler for Jetman, so watch it first if you don't want to be spoiled. |

Which Sentai series do you consider to be the most and least repetitive?
|
Least repetitive? Gekiranger. While it doesn't avoid all the Sentai cliches, about 1/3 to half of an episode would be dedicated to what the villains would be doing, so even when an episode would just be standard MOTW for the heroes, the villains' portions would provide something different.
Most repetitive? Not sure, actually. Probably Goseiger, though. Yes, it has 4 sets of villains, but that also means it has 4 climaxes. Episodes would play out too similarly, just what the monsters' goals are would change. |
I guess most would be Dekaranger and Boukenger, least would be Maskman, Liveman, Jetman, Gekiranger, Go-Busters
