Zeta Gundam: New Translation 2: Lovers
For an autistic kid, Kamille sure does get around. The main plot development at the beginning of this movie was Four Muramase and her angst. So while trying to get out of the Earth sphere, in Hong Kong, Kamille meets this girl. And proceeds to kiss her. Despite the fact that he has a girlfriend. So she vents about how she has no memories of her past and can't stand having no memories. And then there's this big flying..... brick that Titan is using to destroy the city that Four gets in. And it becomes... HOLY SHIT A GIANT FUCKING GUNDAM! Psyco Gundam was fucking badass, looming over both the Mark-II and the Rick Dias and causing so much destruction. Although the pilot attacking Kamile even though she found out he was piloting the Mark-II was kinda bullshit. She puts her memories over a relationship. The next scene was an awesome talking it out scene with Kamille in the Psyco Gundam's cockpit trying to talk Four out of it. We actually got some background on him due to this scene (finally) and he was raised by his neighbor/ girlfriend Fa? And he talks shit about her too to Four. But I thought it was kinda funny that this entire scene happened while they were falling and neither of them are in a major hurry. At one point he starts kissing her and it looked like he was going to go down on her and I was thinking "Whoa Kamille, this isn't the time or place to do that, especially in a falling Gundam. She and the Psycho Gundam get destroyed. The Psyco Gundam was in literally two scenes. Da hell? I imagine this was a pretty emotional arc in the series but this movie seemed to just cut it down to the beginning and end. I like the Zeta Gundam design, especially in the new footage. The bulkiness of the Zeta with some new wings, weapons and a blue color scheme. I also like the fact that the Mark II didn't get destroyed when Kamille upgraded. So the crew stop a colony drop on a moon city, escape said moon city from exploding, something about Cyber Newtypes and the transfer of personnel. I'M A FIRIN' MY LASAR!.... Again. Hyaku Shiki + giant cannon is always a win for me. The final battle of the movie was anticlimactic except for the axis guys. I am really interested to see who they are. |
Marathoning Puella Magi Madoka Magica since it just appeared on Netflix, and with the Rebellion Story being a week away from Blu-ray release it sounds like perfect timing. Really enjoy watching it again, plus this is my first time watching the eng dub.

Madoka is on Netflix?
We watched episodes 9 and 10 of Space Dandy (the plant and the time loop ones) and they were both actually pretty awesome. None of the anime for next season really catches my attention. If I were to check out anything though, it might be M3. Yu-Gi-Oh! should have ended for realz when 5Ds ended. That series has over stayed its welcome. ZeXaL was utter crap and this Arc V looks to be just as bad. The series was at its best when it dealt with mythology. Now I cannot wait for Sailor Moon, Pyscho Pass 2, and whenever Attack on Titan S2 comes out. |
Oh, now Madoka is on Netflix? Great. :|
Will the third movie be put on Netflix on the 8th then? |
HeartCatch 37:
Well, that got real Persona 4 real fast. Who designed this castle? Nyarlethortep? :lol I feel it was done better there, since they faced themselves before they worked out all their problems, but I guess the point of the test was to see if they truly changed. The subtitles kind of messed up, since the characters said "Kage no Jibun" and the subtitles translate it to "Your evil self" yet "Kage" means shadow not evil, and they called a planet a star. "Hoshi" can refer to any celestial body. This Japanese lesson has been brought to you by the letter "き". I liked this episode though. it worked in Persona 4, it works here. |

Everything else just looks so well...anime. It all looked so generic I had to reread some of the descriptions at points because I swore they added something twice or more. |

Alright time for the final episode of Kill la Kill. It was pretty much the most Kill la Kill way for this show to go out, between Ryuuko and Senketsu stealing the show and everything else being garbled and barely coherent.
Overall, the biggest problem with Kill la Kill is hype. Obviously a fandom should never impact a series, but it's hard for it not to. Right now this show is EVERYWHERE and people are excited, and when people get excited they get silly. There are people saying hilarious things like "It's better than TTGL!" or "It's a bona fide masterpiece!" which paints your expectations going in whether you mean it to or not. And with expectations so high going in, Kill la Kill just doesn't live up to anything, it's a perfectly average series which draws a lot of attention to itself by being so bombastic. So bombastic that it eventually starts trying to out bombast its own ridiculousness and as the animation budget seemed to go down the toilet about a quarter of the way through action fatigue set in early, and it set in hard. Ryuuko is a fantastic protagonist, and the way her character plays off of everyone else is the highlight of the show - especially Senketsu and Satsuki (who has an interesting, but drawn out and unnecessarily convoluted character arc) but between that, and the awesome soundtrack, there really isn't a whole lot else worth mentioning. It was just perfectly okay. Not a new favourite, but not really horrible enough in any regard for me to hate it, it might be something I pick out of the bargain bin in like a decade to watch with a few beers or something. |

Kanata 03. Why is Japan so obsessed with incest?
On a pure entertainment level, Kanata has been great so far. The animation is GORGEOUS and although coming off the back of Kill la Kill battles feel kinda small, there is imagination, consistency and a sense of detail which Kill la Kill lacked in the majority of its fight scenes, which is what makes Kanata a joy to watch even with its smaller scale. Sadly if you came for anything more than base entertainment, it's pretty much a total wash. Between the generic world that has way more exposition than necessary for something so cliché and the annoying characters, there really isn't much going for this show other than for the most passive of viewers. |

Do you need the movies to get the ending of the series?

Let's be honest, sub-only people can be pretty arrogant and irrational sometimes. Subs aren't automatically better. If there is a dub that is easily accessible (often there isn't) and voice cast is good that is almost always the way I will go. Do you know why? That is the closest a non-Japanese speaker can get to the original vision of the work. These were created to be watched without subtitles, for people who speak Japanese. Anime is such a visual media, some series more than others, and reading text was not part of the creator's intent. It's not laziness, though I understand people wanting to be able to multitask, it's caring more about the beautiful art and not wanting to miss any of it. I hate that I have rewind sometimes during a sub just to make sure I see everything. It was easier in my teens but it's never ideal. Yes, some dubs have horrible actors and some ruin the dialog buy this isn't 1995. The quality dubs are very common now. Just because you are reading doesn't mean you are getting the best experience. Why do we often end up with multiple translations for different subs? I'm not going to change any minds but I would hope sub-only people will remember their way isn't the only right way. The best way is obviously to speak Japanese but failing that both are acceptable. Also, the vast majority of the population prefers to watch dubbed products. That helps them sell and gives us better access to the content. Solid dubs being distributed in North America during the late 90's/early 2000's really helped open up a different world for fans like us. |
Indeed this is one of the MANY reasons why the dub of Black Lagoon is usually preferred over the sub. Speaking of Black Lagoon saw episode 2 & the torpedo part was FUCKING AWESOMESAUCE.

Talking about subs, I have a hard time watching anime subbed. When I was watching the Gundam compilation movies, I had a hard time following everything. Since anime is such a visual medium, subs do not do it justice as they take you away from all of the stuff happening on screen.
Toku is not just easier to watched subbed because it's live action, but it's paced perfectly well so that subs don't intrude on the action. When characters speak during combat, its either a quick line, or they stop to talk. In anime, somebody might be giving a monologe intercut with action and you'll miss something |
I've never found subs intrusive but then I've always had a high reading and writing age.

There's nothing wrong with preferring dubs, I just find the idea of missing stuff very silly. |
