GUTS-Select is still reeling from what happened with Agam. To have a comrade turn traitor...Hanejiro is still being repaired...and the weight of what he now has to wrestle with has made Kanata far more serious and like a completely different character.

Spinnie is all cute and playful up until it starts spitting out fire.

A Kaiju and a human can share the same kind of hate-fueled intensity? I guess that's something for two races to bond over, in it's own way.

Ryumon does not have time to coddle Kanata through his current emotional crisis, but when push comes to shove (and he's left with no other option) he lets Kanata know that Kanata can rely on him and his comrades, in his own back-handed stoic way.

So I guess baby Pandon's just naturally grow the second head...?

So are they not going to ask how Decker showed up exactly where Kanata was when Pandon threw the rock? Are they just assuming Decker was traveling underground and popped up at the exact right time to save Kanata?

To toss my hat in the nostalgia ring, I really enjoy the cast of the original Ultraman, which yes, Ide and Arashi are absolutely some of my favorites. For Hayata, I like to see it as the "mild-mannered, often quiet member is the secret identity kind of thing" which I think works, and some of Hayata's personality does reflect off Ultraman.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program...

Those were all truly delightful moments, but the fact that the trio netting each other also transitioned to the Opening made it perfect.

A fun episode full of shenanigans and Kanata going through an existential crisis, but quite not in the way I was expecting, which was nice. And as usual, the action was amazing, from the GUTS Griphon save (welcome back, Hanejiro!) to some of the amazing shots with Pandon, like when the trio used formation delta when it became big, or the stand-off between Decker.

Waaaaa catching up time. Episode 15 was fantastic. I loved the way the back-story for Decker explains how some of the stuff in the present works. I wasn't expecting them to reference Other Yuzare from the Trigger episodes! Dyna was there as well apparently!

Dynamic being Kanata's version of Decker is a cool way of introducing a "final form". It's a shame he doesn't just use that all the time, but I get it. It also looks slick as hell. I kind of hope we get a Double Decker team-up at some point.

Overall, just a goddamn great 2-parter.

Episode 16 is a goofier story to give us a breather after the last couple of episodes but it's still very good. GUTS-Select all running around with Butterfly nets trying to catch baby Pandon is silly but I like it. Not all sunshine though with Kanata having some existential angst and the Commander being investigated by Internal Affairs... over something that happened during Trigger???

(Before anyone suggests that this is for episodes 7/8, bear in mind me that a) you can see the Decker Dynamic card in the D Flasher (it’s the only card with a gold back) and b) Raif’s tweeted that he was coming back and got harassed by English speaking fans.

You could just watch the episodes he appears in. If Decker isn't for you, there's no reason to force yourself to watch it

To be honest, after watching Shin Ultraman, I'm a little scared for Shin Kamen Rider. If, with 39 episodes of the original Ultraman, Hideaki Anno turned out to be more of a serial compilation than a solid film, then just imagine what a mess he can make out of 98 episodes of Rider?

Not necessarily a good comparison. Ultraman is inherently an anthology series so it made sense to piece them together like that. With Kamen Rider the individual episodes don’t matter quite as much; and what we’ve seen and what they’ve said tells us they’re focusing on the basic story and possibly drawing closer to the manga. We have seen multiple shocker monsters but, like, look at The First; they’ll probably be used pretty normally for a movie

At this point I'm half-convinced everyone in GUTS-Select knows Kanata is Decker and is just going along with him. Or at least Ryumon for sure, that wound comment was very pointed.

Gotta be honest, I had completely forgotten about Ryumon's backstory until it became relevant here. I didn't expect it to connect to Captain Murahoshi though.

I wonder if the bum arm would've been as much a problem if Decker had just lead with Dynamic Type...then again, I guess the Nursedessei needed to redeem itself after what happened against Terraphaser. Even got the double Finisher with Decker!

I'd say GUTS-Select failed Murahoshi more than he personally failed in this instance. Also the joke with Hanejiro playing music leading into the ED was perfect.

I really enjoyed this episode. Ryumon's backstory connecting with Murahoshi was fantastic but also connected with Trigger, which is a detail I liked.

I also believe this is going to end up a Taiga situation where they just don't really care that he's Decker, but I love Kanata getting upset about being called out, especially at the end with Hanejiro's remark. I love their banter, and Hanejiro's music selections, and that amazing transition to the ending.

And of course, I'm happy to see Gomess again! And Decker's entrance with the GUTS Griphon was fantastic and Nursedessei Battle Mode returns! Despite being short, the fight was still fun to watch.

Next Episode: In case Kanata was wondering what Marluru was up to (which was funny how he mistook Nigel for him).

Gomess appears in a show on Godzilla's birthday again. I like that that's a thing.

Yeah, I was watching the ep and thinking ?oh cool, Gomess, one of the monsters that was a kitbash of a Godzilla costume? then he started doing Godzilla stuff, like walking through powerlines and no-selling getting shot by surface to air missiles canons and whatnot. Then I remembered it was also Godzilla?s birthday, and it all made sense.

Good on Ultraman for honoring his stepbrother like that.

Hey! Wouldn?t you know it! The Ultraman X episode with Gomess (#15) also aired around Godzilla?s B-day on November 3, 2015. I?m not crying, the room just got really dusty. Thank you, Ultraman.

I got to see Shin Ultraman today, and it was great!

I do understand the "rushed" take, but honestly, I think it meshed out better than what I was expecting, and the Ultra Q and the title card were amazing to see.

Despite the concerns I had with how the CGI would look throughout the film, I think it turned out better than I thought, and I just adore how well this film captured the Showa Charm and filmmaking styles so well, and I continue to be amazed with Shiro Sagisu's score of faithfully rescoring the classic tracks to near perfection and the classic sound effects hit me with major nostalgia every time.

I really did enjoy this take on the original Ultraman, which I think was great! Definitely the best movie I've seen this year. And M87 is an absolutely beautiful song. I'm really glad I didn't get too spoiled with this one, and even more glad I didn't have to wait a whole year to see it. I'm definitely picking this one up when it's officially released.

Now to get around to that Dead Kaiju Movie.

It’s been many months but now I’m back to watching Ultraman Mebius and currently finishing up the Ultraman Hikari Saga side story on which I throughly enjoyed. I hope I would be able to finish my Mebius DVD series set before the end of this year and maybe finally watch my copy of the Superior 8 Ultra Brothers movie on Blu-Ray.

Any update on Shin Ultraman US releases? If not, I might just import the HK Blu-ray.

Are these just subtitle files? Meaning, I'll have to download the movie separately and pop this into the folder next to it?

Dang. So I guess it's just a matter of deciding whether I want to wait for a potential theater release, watch a fansub now and go to a screening/buy the domestic blu when it finally happens, or just import a foreign Eng-subbed blu.

Well... I used the site I use to watch Geats and DonBrothers, Dramacool, which had it, so I watched it.

Unfortunately, they don't have this week's releases of the two shows, unless it's on break and I'm just insane.

Watching classic Ultraman, I find it kind of amusing how they just straight up abandon Hayata in the Alien Mefilas episode and it's really only by a miracle that he's able to transform into Ultraman.

Also the Skydon episode where we have the interplay with Hayata taking a VTOl out just to toss Muramatsu an umbrella (tax dollars at work) to Ide watching a guy commit suicide. And then Skydon shows up and it gets even crazier.

Skydon is just an incredibly fun episode!

Mefilas is the best villain of the show IMO, the whole episode is fantastic, I love the dialogue between Mefilas and Hayata ("What are you? Human or alien?") and the end of their fight is so cool.

I agree. So I didn't really like the Shin Ultraman version of Mefilas. He was turned into a chess-player villain who thought everything through many moves ahead, which may be more logical than requiring a child to give up the planet, but at the same time, quite banal. The original Mefilas captivates precisely with its uniqueness as a villain.

I loved Hayata's mocking laugh when Akiko's brother wouldn't give in. And it was pretty cool how Ultraman and Mefilas actually tied.

It also made me start to wonder how much of Hayata was Hayata and how much of him is Ultraman post-fusion, although admittedly some of the recent episodes have actually given Hayata some actual bits of characterization:

- Him being so eager to go on a date with Patty.

- Being the only one in proper uniform in the middle of the night (does he sleep in that?).

- His despair at realizing what he had done by throwing all those Kaiju into space and creating the Monster Graveyard. I guess now I understand why modern Ultras all blow the Kaiju up instead of leaving corpses around.

Although it kind of hurt seeing that they straight up tossed Pigmon up there.

I saw the first ever Ultra episode and the first ever Rider episode in the same day as well as Gavin. After I finish Zen I may resume Ultra. I'm using Maylay disk sets for Ranger episodes. I may pair up Rider with Ultra. The problem is that 98 episode Rider set before V3 which will run into the 2nd Ultra series.

I'm doing a Super Hero Time block for an hour with both shows.

Where there's Chouju, there's Yapool.

The Kanata/Agams arc continues strong, but now Agams has a new friend in the form of our favorite dimensional threat, Yapool. I've not actually seen Ace yet, but it's always neat to see how well modern Toku handles the effects for the dimension breaking and Yapool's effect veiling his true appearance (guy's a walking Ultra Q logo).

Now we've come to the Griphon gets shot down by everything phase (though it was inevitable), but then again, it's up against the Chouju, which are stronger than Normal Kaiju, which I still find funny how these old designs happen to be stronger than even the newer ones. But that miracle double fight was fantastic! Really enjoyed seeing that and Decker beating Terraphaser without the aid of Dynamic.

Next Episode: We're going to put an Ultra on the moon. Or two!

I wonder what it is about Agams' trigger word. It seems related to Laelia, but is it a mantra he created as part of his revenge or some kind of mental command?

So, like, are Ichika and Ryumon just not going to notice the fact that Kanata magically vanished when Decker showed up? He was literally right there in front of them! They could've seen him transforming out of a corner of their eye! Unless they were so distracted by Aribunta that they didn't notice. But I doubt it.

It's nice seeing Deckers' base forms even if he was still getting beaten up before Terraphaser even showed up. Yet it was great to see how far Kanata has come that he was able to save himself without GUTS-Select's help and even managed to turn the tide with Miracle Type! Double Decker! And that was a spectacular Dynamic Type Finisher!
