Dekaranger is pretty average, and Gingaman is really, really bland. Those are the only two series I've seen from that time period.
However, I've heard Timeranger, Abaranger (The next series I plan on watching), and Hurricanger were all pretty good series~ I couldn't stand to watch more than 10 episodes of Magiranger, but that's just me. |
I loved Magiranger, although it took me a bit to really warm up to it. I maintain the writing in it is notably above average for Sentai. The Plot especially is paced extremely well, with each quarter or so of the show being a distinct arc and pretty much every individual episode moving things along at least a bit. There's also a lot of twists that were clearly all thought out beforehand, leading to lots of nice foreshadowing.
And I've seen quite a bit of hate for the heroes around here (and to an extent I get it), but I felt they all had some solid growth and bounced off each other well. Not to mention the villains are pretty cool. Wolzard is one of my favorite Sentai villains, even. Really my biggest (only?) complaint with Magiranger is that obnoxious ED. It hurts my ears. :lol |

Gingaman is basically what Goseiger tried to emulate, with the rangers being from a secret tribe/civilization that still exists to this day sheltered from the outside world, and the fillers(at least the ones I saw) were fun with them trying to blend with said outside world. Timeranger is fun and especially after Time Fire enters the show it gets more interesting(at least that was what I felt when I saw it long time ago). Hurricanger is fun in that it is pretty much a re-imagining of Liveman but with ninjas. Heck, even the motifs are almost in sync(Hurricane Red is a hawk as opposed to Red Falcon being a falcon but both are raptors/birds of prey so it all works out), and even the Gouraigers are a nice nod to Black Bison and Green Sai in that they are horned animals. They start off with their school being wiped out by the bad guys as well like Liveman. Shurikenger is a SUPER FUN character with them having sentai alumni being his alter ego every episode. Oh yeah, fun fact; Shurikenger is the second tsuika senshi following Dragon Ranger to be Green. And Shurikenger came out exactly a decade after Dragon Ranger so it is in a sense an anniversary tsuika senshi celebrating 10 awesome years of tsuika senshisat the time. Too bad Green Buster is not a thing(and yet Green Hippopotamus is a thing). :lolol Dekaranger is a great nod to police drama shows(at least the Japanese ones for sure). Some say it has no overarching plot(and they are right) aside from Agent Abrella being the link, but that is intentional as they are paying tribute to the omnibus-style police dramas where most of the time they solve the case within an episode. Magiranger was Fiveman 2.0 and a great marketing move by Toei and Bandai capitalizing on the Harry Potter craze at the time. |
Marvelous was a ignorant and arrogant leader ?

Personally found Hurricanger to be an average show that aside from the Gouraigers, played it too safe and I hated Magiranger, I didn't like the heroes or villains and it has some of the worst special effects in Sentai. Haven't seen Time or Gao. |

Why does Boukenger have it's reputation? All I know is that it's a parody like Carranger and Operation Overdrive sucked? |
I just found it to be overwhelmingly bland. I didn't last more than 10 episodes because I was so bored of it that I had no drive to continue watching it.

I've heard stuff like it's boring all the way to that it disgraces Sentai ideals. |

Boukenger is another series like Magiranger where I had seen nothing but love for it until I started posting around this site. I haven't seen more than a couple episodes myself, so I can't stick up for it the way I can Magiranger, though.

What's so interesting about Gingaman's villains? I'm genuinely curious here because while I didn't particularly not care for any of them, the only one that I really liked a lot was Sambash, and even he wasn't that great. Overall I just found them kind of bland and extremely handicapped by the nonstop, repetitive formula of each general's plans. Need I remind everyone about the tomatoes? :p |
Do Toei reboot the franchise with Go-Busters ?
|
I dunno if you can really "reboot" something that restarts with a new story and tone each year.
Toei definitely wanted Go-Busters to be a new beginning. They talked about it being the first spy Sentai since Goranger and, because of that, they wanted it to be a "new beginning" for the Sentai franchise. I tihnk the visuals and tone of the series probably would have continued on to other Sentai shows if it had actually succeeded instead of kinda just being a dud. My biggest regret with Go-Busters not really performing is that we'll never really see some of the more intense Sentai designs using the really sleek material Go-Busters used in their suits. |
Ya know, Sentai's treatment of its mecha kind of baffles me. Mecha are probably the most important part of a Sentai toyline, save for maybe the DX Line. Despite this, they usually don't put all that much effort into making them unique or special compared to the mecha that came before, especially when it comes to battles. Its always the same battles almost every week. Say what you will about Go Busters as a show, you can't argue with the fact that it at least made an effort to do something different with its mecha battles. I understand that doing interesting and unique stuff often costs more money but if you can't even bother to put a little extra money toward such an important part of your toyline, what can you put that money towards?

What's the general opinion of Go-onger?
|
Quote:
It's basically a less genuinely clever Carranger with the absurdity cranked up to infinity in an attempt to compensate. Which might sound like an insult, but A. few things are as clever as Carranger, and B. Go-Onger is loads of fun if you're in the right mood. |
Quote:
But this is a turn off for the Sentai fans? Sentai's ALWAYS been wacky! Shit, Go-Onger's going on the backlog now! |
Quote:
Personally, I didn't enjoy Go-Onger because I wasn't fond of the cast, other than Tokuyama as the 6th Ranger, and even then I felt him to be hugely wasted in the series. On top of that, I didn't care for the characters, I could never connect with them and it made enjoying the series and caring about them difficult. As far as what I look for in comedy, Go-Onger most definitely was not it. There are a lot of comedy heavy tokusatsu shows that did comedy much better (the aforementioned Carranger, Ryukendo, heck, even Keitai Sosakan 7 had some clever comedy). |

In the same show, an anime character's son is kidnapped and asks the Rangers to help him out. Sentai's ALWAYS had stupid shit regardless if the tone from my experience. Gekiranger had Jan using a cleaning rag to win a fight for example |
Quote:
Also, there are martial arts out there that advocate for the use of ingenuity when one is suddenly put into danger. Jan using the rags to fight isn't as weird as you might think. Like, there are instructors out there who will teach you how to defend yourself using something like a towel or a scarf. |
Does anybody know why Toei decided to exclude Goranger and JAKQ from the Super Sentai series prior to Ohranger and why they decided to re-include them retroactively?

edit: Whoops, posted this in the wrong topic :lol
So, I'm working on an Ex-Aid cosplay, but I need to know what the back piece underneath the helmet thing looks like. Does anybody have any images of Mighty Brothers X, Ride Players, or Cronus from behind? (Spoiler is only names of suits. Tagged it just in case) |
Is it just me, or is KyurenOh actually the smallest Megazord because of the cockpits?

I can't imagine how would look like a sentai co-produced by Marvel in these days.

There are a couple of earlier Sentai you can take and update as basically "Agents of Shield: Sentai Version". Battle Fever J's episodes are as goofy as certain clips make them seem.
Except for Cossack's death. That was stupid. |

Cossack comes from an orphanage and witnessed the death of the man who ran the orphanage. In his final episode, he meets a young girl whose father is killed in front of her. Cossack spends the bulk of the episode trying to befriend her and help her heal but she doesn't really trust him, sees him as just another violent person. He decides to meet with her and leaves his suit behind, only to be gunned down in front of the girl. Like, I can see what he was trying to do but the girl's father was killed by the same enemies and the show doesn't really do anything to address the fact that, yet again, the girl sees someone gunned down in front of her. |
