Apparently according to the novelisation, it doesn't combine in the conventional sense. When Zordon introduced the zords initially he told the Rangers that they scanned the most powerful life form at that time. Supposedly they do this again during the fight, only this time they scan Goldar - which is why the two have the same body shape.

I got this as second-hand info though, and haven't been able to verify it myself yet.

This... makes a surprising amount of sense, to be honest. I sort of wish they said something about it during the fight, because that explanation sits better with me. It also makes way for a great opportunity in that they can change the design completely in the next movie. One can hope. :p

During one of the training sequences a scorpion crawls out from under a rock and is prominently seen on screen. No one mentions it, but it's hard to miss. Any chance that it's an intentional nod to Scorpina?

It very well could be. Hell, they mentioned Mariner Bay and Reef Side as street names.

Same. I'm so over cheaty designs that hide their cheats under the excuse of being "complex." I watched the Lightspeed Megazord combination on YouTube earlier, and it saddens me that a bunch of cardboard puppets, some sweet music and a smoke machine create a more impressive combination scene than a multimillion dollar movie. I can't help but look at the clever, intuative transformations of the older toys where both the Zords and Megazords looked awesome, despite the simple transformations, and roll my eyes at how this movie and Marvel and of course the Transformers movies can't be bothered to put in the same effort with so many resources at their disposal.

Even if a future redesign happens (and I'm sure it will for toy sales) I really hope it at least pretends to have a transformation scheme.

And to be fair, it's partially the fault of the Zyuranger footage they had to work with back then.

Expecting the Dragonzord for the next film isn't too outlandish.
So, with the upcoming Dragonzord, how do you expect the Megazord will change?
Zyutei style, where the Dragonzord becomes shoulder pads, Battle Mode, where the Tyrannosaurus is left out, or a complete redesign to allow all 6 to combine in a new manner?

I ask because, while the last one makes the most sense from a sales perspective, it's not so much from a buyer's outlook, as they just dropped $100+ for these zords (Well, $60 if you got them on discount a month after release).
Additionally, the first two methods can work with the original Megazord, either clipping on (I'm sure with all the partsforming on Tyranno, they could engineer a method to secure the Dragon), or, if going Battle Mode, just nix the Tyranno altogether.
