Actually Disney were forced to tone down the contact violence which is why later seasons were much more special effects heavy compared to the Power Ranger roots. I know all this seems silly to us, but us the fandom are a VERY different kettle of fish to the soccer Mums. I personally DO think they'll have issue with evil statue of liberty and a woman with a gimpmask for a face.

If they actually catch the gimp mask on Candirilla, then they're either actively looking for something to complain about, or they have way too damn much time on their hands to notice something like that.

I don't think anyone had a issue with Rita's cone tits in MMPR. I don't think Candy's gimp mask is going to be a huge issue.

I'm always amazed they got away with that, same with Divatox's cleavage but then the 90s was a very different time for children's TV back then. People could actually die on screen, and bleed. Even a ripped shirt is pushing it in modern western kids TV. Shit sucks.

I dunno, I've seen live action kids comedy shows get away with than they ever would on the current Power Rangers.

When I grew up and realised Casper was a dead child, it made my childhood seem a lot darker and more painful than I was aware.

We are less strict then they were in the 90's. In the Marvel cartoons on Fox Kids, they had to change the Punisher, Carnage and Blade to make them less violent. In the first DBZ dub with the ocean voice cast, they had to make sure that characters don't die. That's how the whole "The Next Dimension" nonsense started.

LESS strict? Maybe it's just nostalgia then, but beside obvious examples like Spider-Man with the 'no punching and mercy bullets' business I remember the cartoons of my youth and early teens being much more graphic and less child centric. I remember the blood in DBZ, and when characters in Batman TAS got hurt, they'd bleed. I remember Morph dying in X-Men. Etc

About the only examples of modern cartoons that even feel a touch on those originals are Generator Rex (this deals with some complex stuff, albeit in a kid friendly way), Ben 10 Alien Force (not graphic in the presentation but people actually died in this show) and the Justice League and Unlimited series. Pretty much every other western show I've seen has felt horribly watered down in comparison to what they were like in the 90s.

The problem is that you're naming the exceptions, not the rules. Batman used real guns, but the sheer number of shows that used laser blasters (Including military series GI Joe) is just baffling. DBZ's original dub by Ocean was laughable in how watered down it was, and shows like X-Men and Spider-Man had the primary enemies be robots just so that the heroes could inflict harm without actually inflicting harm.

That's likely. But with how many cartoons got greenlit, there were a ton of terrible ones that play it safe, so it kind of balances out.

BTAS also pushed the envelope on EVERYTHING.

It's last season had a really disturbingly tragic analysis of an abusive relationship. (complete with a woman being pushed through a window and falling several stories, nearly dying, and still taking her abuser back at the first sign of any half-hearted redemption) It's first season had child abuse and child slavery. (and regular slavery) A shitload of really dark and real stories populated the entire run. Hell, even when the DCAU evolved into Justice League into the 2000's, there was an episode where a women was tortured in her dreams and died in real life.

Batman was pretty unique. The 90's flip-flopped between shows that got away with A LOT, and shows that got away with almost nothing. For every Batman, Gargoyles or Beast Wars, there was a show that had nothing but weak lasers, excuses for dodging certain death, and used "destroyed" instead of "killed."

The 90's was, honestly, pretty eradict and hard to pin down WHAT was popular/widespread.

Granted it's just one quote, but it sounds like this will end up being another MMPR nostalgia cash grab.

The sad thing is, the fandom is pretty equally split between 'original is best' twats who have never seen anything beyond a few MMPR episodes as a child and kids who don't know any better. WE all know the show has been terrible since Saban Brands came back, but we as a fandom are such an insignificant minority our words come out at such a low volume they aren't even heard.

As long as Saban sells toys and has aplogists we're gonna keep getting this shit. Why so many never understand that is truly beyond me, but those 'I'm a "true" Power Rangers fan so I'll even support shit' folks sure are in for a slap in the face when Saban Brands runs the show into the ground and it is a toy only line ten years down the line.

Not entirely related, and someone may have mentioned it already, but I do find it amusing that the villains of Dino Charge are bounty hunters and the Toei Hero Next 4 with the Kyoryuger cast is called 'We are Bounty Hunters'. It seems a weird little coincidence.

I'm not surprise that DC will end up being another MMPR nostalgia cash grab. Dino Thunder was almost the same since people feel like DT was trying to rehash MMPR. I seen some people feel like Abaranger also rehash a few things from Zyuranger.

I think the best 'MMPR Clone' was Ninja Storm, the lack of a single serious moment hurt it but the teenagers didn't feel like aliens like they did in MMPR and it didn't fall apart half way through like Dino Thunder.

I know everyone is currently on a "FUCK TOMMY!" bend due to recent events, but honestly, the middle of MMPR, when Tommy was gone/powerless, was really rather boring.

It doesn't make DT better than NS (Well, I naturally think DT is better than NS, but that's just me), but it does make it resemble MMPR more :p
