Hopefully there isn't an auto-transformation gimmick, or if there is one, it is well implemented. I'm not against auto-transformations, I just don't know if the stability can hold. But I'm sure BoJ will have a solid design.

wow that mech and those suits are absolutely gawd awful
|
For me the suits are okay. The mech is horrible. But I had a thought, am I the only one that gets the feeling that the designers of recent Sentai series tend to get lazy about something every season? Whether it be the morpher, suit, mech, or weapons? For me, this season seems to be bot suits and mech. I like the suits, but they just seem easy and overly simple.

The mecha looks like Minecraft. I hate Minecraft. A lot. |
It's not a matter of laziness. It's simply that design philosophy within Sentai has changed. It kind of started with Go-onger and has really developed into something that's a bit more simplistic and toyetic. I don't mind it, because the toys will be awesome to play with, but it's certainly not the same as before.
You can kind of see how the suit and mecha designs evolve throughout history. The mecha for example, went from blocky in the 80's to a bit more detailed and mechanical from Zyuranger, to natural and organic starting with Gaoranger, and finally now we have something that's definitely more kiddified. My guess is that they're aiming younger and younger with their demographic, hence the designs. |
The more I look at it the dumber it gets.
The quad-change sort of works, and the cubes look fine individually but the combined mecha looks laughably bad. It reminds me Engine-O in its totem-like look but the cube nature of it is just awful. I really don't mind the auto transform nature of the kabab skewer, what I don't like that it's a separate piece that does not originate from any of the mecha. So it might a well be a completely new mecha. And finally, for the mecha, we now have a clear Pile of Bricks to add to our brick of a mecha line. The suit designs look even worse. The helmets look great but than the actual suit kicks in. with a bland over arcing design (solid color, trim around boots and gloves) but with a way too complex individual tempographed design it just looks awful. |
Again, am I the only one that notices how much the elephant and shark rangers helmets look like the ones we used for our elephant and shark Spirit Rangers in Jungle Fury?

yup with clear images its still cool. lets just hope the show is better than last two shows.
|
The suit design is pretty ugly. The animal the Juohgers are representing is made with the animal face design on the helmets, so it was redundant for them to put another animal face on the torso. Its like they weren't confident that the animal face on the helmet was clear enough to represent the animal or they ran out of ideas and decided to put the animal face on.
Maybe there is something to it story wise, but it just feels like a sluggish design choice. |
No one ever said any word about Cube Giraffe.
We may have a 7th ranger, guys. |
My God, they're literally just baby blocks. Like, that's what they look like. the blocks with letters/numbers on it toddlers play with to learn how to spell and count.
It's uncanny. |

Still not digging it.
Who besides me thinks this would've been far better off as a Pre-MMPR Sentai season? |
I'm loving these mecha; they're like a cross between Shinkenger and Go-Onger. The main robo looks to be very clean with just the right amount of detail...almost has a Mayan vibe with the lion heads on the knees and the geometric patterns.

I love the helmets, and the colors chosen for the main team. I love that there's a female blue Ranger. But those zords are awful. And then there's the costumes. Is that really the best they could do? So uncreative, and such a shame.
|
I honestly love that it feels that they are trying to do a modern version of an 80's Sentai for an anniversary season, I mean just from the aesthetics of the Mecha and Suits. I hope we get like an evil alien leader with a giant army at his or her disposal too like those seasons normally did. Personally I'd love if the villains were something like GaoRanger merged with LiveMan.

Yeah... I'm really not a fan of that mecha at all. Just looks incredibly dumb to me.
Suits are okay I guess. |

I got a prototype of Jyuuou King. It's growing on me. |
I admit that the suits are growing on me too. I'm still not crazy about the mecha design, but I want to see it in action before I can make a proper judgement on it.
|
I hope Red doesn't have a sword as his main weapon, but he most likely will :\

Man, I always complain about simplistic transformations (and half the time end up buying the toy anyhow.. looking at you SPD, Goseiger, Go-Onger, and Space Deleter <_<) but now that I've seen the clear pictures it looks like you just stack 1, 2, & 3 up in block mode, stick the spike in, either the arms spring around or you flip them out, then you turn the entire thing around, flip up the bird head, and done! I'm curious to see where the combinations go from there. The Gorilla actually looks a lot more complex. Also I'm really curious to see what the MiniPla will look like and if it will try to add the missing articulation (and 2 legs) back in like they usually do. But hey, a mecha set that's not driven by some collectible gimmick like Engine Souls, Hiden Disks, Headders, Zyudenchi, swappable trains, or Shuriken hats! (unless the spikes are the collectible gimmick) It's just hindered due to other gimmickiness... |
Yeah, the Mecha looks to transform by stacking the boxes in the correct order, then sliding the Head Pin through them all, causing them all to auto-transform into the mighty fighting robot form. Not exactly sure what they were thinking, but eh, rolling with it.
|
You know what? I'm actually surprised the stacking cube thing hasn't been done before now.
It's somewhat common knowledge that Plex uses a cube-based design language. Seriously, check out their How To Draw Manga: Transforming Robots book... it's all about cubes. This seems like an obvious extension of that design language. |

Why am I excited about this? I mean, the suits look like straight up 80's, aka my dad when he wears his oversized wolf tshirts. The mecha looks like kill it with MINECRAFT. But I'm totally excited about this. I'm sure I'll figure out why soon.
|
I've been wondering. Maybe the blocks are interchangeable. Like Blue, Red, and Yellow make up the first mech. But then you can replace whichever one you want with green or white, and make a new Block-Oh?
I just love us a fandom. Every year everyone wishes so hard for something different in motif, and mech, and whatever. And then they give us something different like ToQger or Ninninjin or Brick-Oh and we bitch that it's to different. I'm guilty of it to, I know. Just saying. We don't know what the hell we want. Personally though I love this, aaaaaaall of this. The suits, the helmets, the Mecha, I love it. All it needs to be perfect is a female monster general I can fawn over. |

Further thoughts:
Will they find their spirit animals? http://www.tokunation.com/attachment...1&d=1449614741 Will they have cube boner like ToQ Choo Choo? Will the elephants be in fact green? Because damn son, that takes a lot of drinking. Will there be a competition to see who will run wilder when they do the crossover movie with Ninninger? I bet their lair is a veterinary hospital. Or a nature preserve. Or a Petsmart. Who designed the mecha? Stewie from Family Guy? |

I'm curious about how the pixel-art aesthetic is going to translate to the show. I actually wouldn't be surprised if we see some pixel animation in the opening sequence. Someone in this thread observed that they seem to be aiming for an even younger audience, and I fear they might be right. Rider certainly seems to be doing the same thing. I know I'd be happiest if Sentai would skew toward a slightly older audience. (In fairness, I liked Shurikenjin quite a bit, and the WTF element of the design just added to my enjoyment.) As an aside, I'd assumed that the sword/spike thing runs through all three blocks, but looking at it again (now that it appears the sword is removable), it now seems it only runs through the red 1 cube. That would suggest that, yeah, the rest of the mecha doesn't transform outside the stacking of the blocks. I would love to be proven wrong. |
