I just have the last three episodes of Dekaranger to go, but I decided to make a side trip and watch the Abaranger/Dekaranger team-up movie. It was... weird. There is definitely a tonal difference between the two teams and the whole thing ends up being a lot goofier than Dekaranger's standard (telephone dinosaur curry pervert why?). The bit where Jasmine, Umeko, and Ranru dress up in off-the-shoulder kimonos while sporting tattoos and wielding submachine guns is probably the biggest big-lipped alligator moment I've ever seen in a Sentai. Still, the story is solid, the action's good, and there's some fun interplay between the two casts. My main takeaway, though, is that after only seeing him for a few minutes I really, really want to see more of Abarekiller; dude is badass.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I took away from that team up too. I know people say that Abaranger is a really dark series masqueraded by a lot of comedy but that isn't really reflected there, which makes me all the more interested to check the series out when its properly subbed.
(Which is probably going to take forever so I may just end up tracking down the HK ones) |

I'm watching Abaranger right now, and they say its a dark series? I don't know, its seems light to me. I guess the fact that Abare Killer is gonna... you know, is what makes people think of it as dark. By the way, I finished Episode 28, the wedding episode, it was a good Asuka episode. You see more of Asuka's background and he's relationship with Jannu/Mahoro. |

Of course, I haven't had the chance to see many Abaranger. It could be like Zyuranger and have an almost bipolar effect of serious and silly. I doubt it gets that "dark" though. |
And Dekaranger is finished, save the Magiranger team-up. Overall impressions? Probably my favorite Sentai so far. Great cast, great mechs, fantastic action, some really good stories, good humor... the monster designs were pretty bad, but that aside I freaking loved this show. Better than Dairanger, better than Jetman, and even better than Gokaiger. I loved this series and will probably rewatch it all over again once Over-Time finishes their sub of it.
Up next... well, the aforementioned Deka/Magi team-up. But after that I'm going back to the 90s with Zyuranger. |
Double-post, don't care. I decided to go ahead and watch the Magiranger/Dekaranger team-up now instead of waiting. It... well, it wasn't terrible, per say, but it sure as hell wasn't good. I think I may just punch the next person that says the word "family" to me.
This movie really reinforces my total lack of interest in Magiranger and I think it's safe to say I'll never go back and watch more of it. The Dekaranger parts, unfortunately, didn't make up for it, either. The characters felt all right, but there were some little things that bugged me, like Ban having the wrong SPD License and the lack of the narrator when Jasmine used her Esper powers. It was kind of a cute epilogue, but on the whole I feel it didn't add much to the Dekaranger story (unless you really needed to see Tetsu dress up as a woman again - which was, in fairness, the funniest part of the film). But yeah, bad movie, especially when watched right after Dekaranger's amazing finale. Also, I said last night that the girls' weird dress-up scene in the Deka/Aba movie was a crazy big-lipped alligator moment? Man, that shit had nothing on the crazy dress-up scene from Magi/Deka. |
I'm actually gonna piggyback off of Switchblade and say that I watched the first episode of Dekaranger. Right now, I kinda have mixed feelings. I know it's typical Sentai that the red ranger is the one that really stands out at first, but here it's like he's the only one with a personality beyond... enjoying baths. I don't know, maybe it's just me coming off of my Geki high into a new show, but I feel like there was something lacking. The choreography wasn't all that great either, with the most exciting thing being the pea-shooter Hybrid Magnum finisher. I'm not going to write off the series yet, but it's going to take more than this to win me over.

Ugh, I had a hard time with DekaRanger, and once I hit that giant space baby episode I couldn't take it any more. I think I might have watched the next episode, and that one introduced DekaMaster, who was completely awesome, but I kept having flashbacks to the horrible space baby and couldn't go on.
I just kept finding it pointlessly stupid or silly. Like Green's thinking pose (or was it blue, I don't even remember any more), wtf? And Ban was loud and annoying. And Murphy kinda bugged me. And all of Umeko's episodes were bad like that space baby one. Maybe I'll resume it again someday, after I finish Shinkenger, and after I try a couple others I'm interested in, like Boukenger and Jetman. |
