Hey Guys!
I figured I'd post in here instead of starting a new thread. I need your help! I'm currently looking for a new Sentai series to watch, so I turn to you intelligent chaps for recommendations. To get a handle on my tastes, I've seen the following: Jetman (really liked) Gekiranger (not a fan - Jan and the ridiculous plushies ruin everything for me) Shinkenger (liked a lot, except for the slump in the middle) Goseiger (I'm tepid on this show, even though I really love the last 10 episodes) Gokaiger (love this show) Go-Buster (Pretty lukewarm on this show too, though the arc where they defeat Messiah and the final arc are pretty awesome) Kyoryuger (love this show so far) I've also seen the first episodes of the following: Changeman (didn't really grab me) Liveman (seemed cool) Dairanger (meh) Kakuranger (I was pretty annoyed by the first episode, but I like the structural experimentation) Megaranger (cool, but the CGI is distracting) Timeranger (looked cool) Dekaranger (looked decent) Boukenger (interesting cast) I tried watching Maskman, which I loved at first -- but the huge number of "troubled child of the week" episodes destroyed my interest. I'm open to revisiting this at some point -- maybe if I had a guide of filler episodes to skip. The most important part of a sentai show for me is having a dynamic, well-developed, charming cast. This is the reason I like Gokaiger and Kyoryuger so much. So given the above, what's a good bet for me? Help, so I can participate in this thread! ;) |
I'm enjoying Shinkenger. I've only seen one episode but still :lol

I'd normally recommend Zyuranger, too, but you seem kinda lukewarm on Dairanger and Kakuranger, which had the same production team. |

Shinkenger 02
Once again: How did Saban turn this beautiful show into that?! Laziness is how. I think Ryuu might be insane. He loves Takeru like I love Lady Candelira, and I know I'm batshit crazy. Kotoha though is definately my favorite. Taking over for her Onee-San, trying so damned hard, and still getting back up! *HUGS!* .... Ahem .... Mako and Chiaki are definately up there to. What I mostly love is how flushed out the characters are after only two episodes. Something Samurai got so very wrong. |
I am going to finish Kyoryuger

I love Ryunosuke for being insane like that. He's great <3 In the movie, Takeru wants him and Kotoha to make a plan, because they need "something a little odd" and Ryuu's like: "But... I'm not that weird!" and Kotoha just says: "I may not be as crazy as Ryuu-san, but I'll try my best!"- Best lines ever. I think Shinkenger is the best Sentai when it comes to character development. ALL Shinkengers have an about equal amount of character episodes, ALL develop at some point of the story. That's basically what made me enjoy Shinkenger so much. I might rewatch it after my Goseiger re-watch. Oh, and if you care, there's this crossover episodes with Shinkenger in Decade- you might wanna check it out, because those were probably the best episodes in Decade. They're not necessary to understand Shinkenger as a whole, but they're kinda fun and are basically what got me to care for Kamen Rider. |
There's Dacade episodes where the Shinkenger's just come out?! Is it in Decade's run or is it a special of some sort??

"Fuck you, Power Rangers Samurai. You are a terrible show." That is all. |
I feel like I dodged a bullet neglecting to watch PR: Samurai.

Actually, Shinkenger's character plotting was pretty weak - at least in my opinion. It was fun at the beginning when no one Ranger seemed more important than the other (well obviously Takeru was, but I mean in the amount of focus) but then as the show grew older, it started repeating the same stories over and over. I'm pretty sure Chiaki gets the same character arc about six times in the entire shows run.
They are doing the same thing in Goseiger, and I hate that kind of storytelling. |
I haven't watched much Shinkenger, but I had a question regarding those that watched Shinkenger and Go-Onger.
I was looking at this set of chibi figures: http://bit.ly/1lvZioN And I'm not really getting the references if there are any. I'm guessing the reason Shinkenred has neko ears and a tail is perhaps a reference to the episode the monster was switching souls with random inanimate objects, red was turned into a lucky cat coin bank, so is there a reason Shinkenblue is on all fours? Also, I can't make out what Go-on black I holding, is that a weapon? Cookie? Wha-? |

Shinkenger 03
The more I watch this the more I wonder what Saban is doing. Chiaki learned a valuable lesson, never argue with the man smacking you upside the head. He's doing it for a reason. Kotoha, poor Kotoha, she tried so hard to keep the team together ; . ; And when Chiaki's friends were hurt because of him, I felt like he gave a damn more. So much more. Than ... Whatever Green's name was in Samurai, I want to say Mike? And him training to out-run the attack made a hell of alot more sense then sensing it and running for his life anyway. And I'm starting to think despite his asshole-ish-ness, Takeru cares about his team. If he didn't he never would've pushed Chiaki. He just would've taken the Shadophone and found another Shinken Green. |

Switchblade, thanks for the Dekaranger recommendation. I'm 2 episodes in, and so far, it's awesome!
The characters seem cool. Ban is a screaming red, but he's not a 5 year old in a grown man's body, like other screaming reds. I really love the noir-ish soundtrack. I love how police iconography is implemented into the henshin, roll call, posedown, and finisher. I love the robot fights -- they're more ambitious than any I've seen in sentai so far, barring maybe Go-Busters. I'm also intrigued by the structural deviation from standard Sentai shows. Like how there's no main evil syndicate (so far) and how the standard "monster shows up, is defeated small, grows, and then is defeated for real" pattern has yet to occur. This show seems like it will have slightly more variety than usual. And it's cool how the next episode's story is introduced at the end of the current episode. So far, Dekaranger is making me super happy. |
Up to episode 32 of Kyoryuger, after I'm up to date I'm not sure if I should pop down and watch Gokaiger or that one with the trio and the guy with the helmet with the fringe (I suck at names). :/
