First Iron Fist and now Inhumans.... Oh well, at least I got X-Men Blue to look forward to every two weeks.
|
so I watched Spider-Man: Homecoming yesterday. Loved it and Holland is definitely a great choice so far for Spidey. It had great comedic moments and was a delight to watch.
However, I had two problems: 1. Eugene "Flash" Thompson. I'm not really familiar with Flash pre-Venom but was he always this annoying? I know the whole point of him being a bully is that he's annoying and suppose to be hated but Homecoming's Flash is really, really annoying and his nickname for Peter is childishly cringy. Felt like you could've gotten rid of him and the film wouldnt be any different. 2. Michelle/MJ. She was more likeable than Flash but her rebellious/outsider hipster-like personality was just cringy and her scenes which looked to be designed to be humorous for the current generation where just as cringy. But overall, ignoring those two, I generally enjoyed the film and would definitely recommend it. |
Geh. I don't see Homecoming until tommorow evening. Though from what I've heard, it is simply amazing

My video review:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uBOMyALyyM My favorite moments: The video documentary at the beginning When Spidey webs the dude to his own car and the conversation that proceeds Peter speaking Italian back to the store owner When he is trapped in the warehouse and after the montage only 37 minutes have gone by The Kill Mode bit The epic failure of an interrogation scene The "OH SHIT!" moment you get when Vulture turns out to be Liz's dad Peter sneaking into his room only to have Ned there Ned's "I was... uh... looking at porn." The bathroom scene with Happy and Peter Aunt May's "WHAT THE F..." Cap's post credit speech Also, Scorpion, Tinkerer, Shocker, and Prowler? HOLY ****!!!! I wonder who else was around I didn't catch. Although, not sure I'm a fan of Gargan being a criminal right from the get go instead of being an invenstigator first. KRWolf: Flash - Yes, this was the whole reason Flash was written to be Spider-Man's top fan in the comics. It was made to go against the fact that he would bully Peter every day from breaking his glasses to forcing him into a boxing match, etc. It wasn't until college and then his service in Vietnam when he really chilled down. I thought Michelle was just fine. She was just as realistic as the rest of the cast and her lines were great. Not sure how you can consider her even remotely a hipster. My only nitpick is the sixth movie in a row where the villain learns Peter is Spidey, but at least Vulture learned it through intelligence instead of Peter just ripping off his mask saying, "Hey look, I'm Spider-Man." |

Michelle - Well her awkward outsider/almost rebellious personality put me off. Especially when it looked like it was designed for comedic effect (e.g. the detention scene and when she flips the finger at either Peter or Liz at the prom). It was on the point of cringy. Also I said hipster-like not a hipster, she has qualities that almost make her hipster like but she isn't one. Also, "her lines were great", i dont think anyone going out of the theater is going to say "Man, remember that moment when Michelle said *insert Michelle line*?! That was so great!". More likely to talk about other great scenes and lines in the film, specifically any of Peter's moments. Aside from Homecoming, here's some Marvel Legacy news if anyone is gonna bother with it: * Deadpool will apparently return to his villainous roots. Because after having a successful film where he's portrayed as a likeable and hilarious anti-hero, the obvious step is to make him a villain once again. Logic * Bendis will still be writing Invincible Iron Man which will investigate the disappearance and eventual return of Tony Stark. * Amadeus Cho's "Totally Awesome" Hulk will headline the Incredible Hulk series and head to Sakaar from the Planet of the Hulk. * Deadpool will be in the Defenders apparently alongside Luck Cage, Iron Fist, Daredevil, and Jessica Jones. Or just appear in it for an issue... * X-Men Blue and Gold will have a four part crossover that features the return of Mojo. * Falcon will have The Patriot as his partner in his solo series. Thoughts: * Dont care much for Deadpool as I use to. I might pick it up but the over-saturation of multiple Deadpool comics got to me. He's my favourite but did he really need so many mini-series just because the film was successful. * Can we get someone else to replace Bendis? When I picked up Invincible Iron Man as part of All-New All-Different Marvel, it was definitely my favourite series from that run. Until after the first story arc finished, and it was just a lead-up to Civil War II and had the horrendous art style change. Didnt bother with International Iron Man and dropped Invincible and Infamous Iron Man after 2/3 issues as they were just boring. * Dont care for Cho or Hulk, so miss. But having Cho headline "Incredible Hulk" seems to go against the whole Legacy idea Marvel wants. Right? * Deadpool in Defenders. See my first thought but remove "might pick it up" * I'll most likely pick up the Blue and Gold crossover as I've been enjoying Blue so far. * Dont really care that much about Falcon. So far, the only Legacy they have is the updated number (e.g. Incredible Hulk is around the #700) except for Falcon, Defenders, X-Men, and also America (which i didnt list cos I'm surprised they havent cancelled it yet). Will most likely not bother with Legacy as its obviously Marvel Rebirth but there's a tiny itty bitty little part of me that hopes Marvel gets their shit together and just drop the SJW and "we need diversity in everything and it has to be the only important factor to every series we sell". But so far, not a good impression. |

So less Marvel Rebirth and more Marvel New 52 if you ask me. |

As for your Marvel Legacy stuff, I've given up on current day comics. I've got so much stuff from the 60s-80s to read that the modern stuff just doesn't interest me. It doesn't mean I won't read a trade here or there, but the vast majority of my interests lie in the Silver and Bronze Ages. |

Let's see how bad it is and maybe Disney will step in and enforce stricter rules. Marvel's unwell as hell and needs to be forced to stop this or they'll be in the same mess forever. |

The new Spider-Man movie was not bad. I kinda like it and there was parts of the movie that I didn't like. Maybe it is because I'm getting sick of Spider-Man, but I didn't love the movie as everyone else. I think it is worth watching if you like Spider-Man and the MCU.

Guess what Marvel did a few months ago? |
I probably missed this somewhere, but on Thursday morning Joan Lee (Stan's wife) died. She was 95. Such a shame. My thoughts go out to Stan and his daughter (who is also named Joan).

Eh, the biggest issue with Marvel these days according to my friends are pushing characters nobody likes (Sam Nova), stupid writing (Hydra Cap apparently still being able to wield Mjolnir despite working for the Nazis and Civil War II), Perlmutter being a petty asshole (Trying to ignore X-Men and replace them with the Inhumans despite X-Men Blue and Gold being their best selling comics currently and other FOX ban shit), needless crossovers (The beloved Kamala Khan being in Civil War II did NOT go over well with fans at all) and being a lot more expensive than the competition despite these issues which screams arrogance. People also weren't happy when some bigwig there said "Our comics haven't been selling well because people don't want diverse characters" despite Kamala Khan, Miles Morales and I believe Amadeus Cho getting instant adoration by the public

Also another problem, the constant relaunches and cancelling ongoings and using the excuse they intended for it to be a mini/limited series. It's really tiring now... |
Watched Homecoming. Was good, but not as good as I hoped. Was about on par with Raimi's first two films for me. Everything they did wrong this did brilliantly, but then it missed the mark on things they did superbly.
Remember when these films acknowledged he has goddamn Spider-sense? I sure don't. Now I'm not expecting it to have flared up just before he found out Toombes was Liz's father or anything but there were SO many instances in this film where it should have. Karen needs to go ASAP. I'm fine with the suit being Stark tech, I can deal with his vision being like a readout, but the AI crap was just too much. It said a lot that the best scenes were the ones where he used the homemade suit, because that's exactly what Spider-Man should be. He doesn't need all the tech because he's smart enough to do it himself. Now if the point of it all was simply to prove he didn't need the suit and in the next film he has the proper suit but without Karen and all the tech bits (ie he comes up with all the web stuff himself rather than have it handed to him) then great, job done. But it really shouldn't stick around for the sequel. Casting and tone was superb. Can't say I was a fan of Michelle/MJ but generally it was pretty fantastic all around. It was nice to see a movie where it genuinely felt like a bunch of 15 year olds. Keaton absolutely nailed it as the Vulture too. So yeah. Happy but there's room for improvement. As far as 2017 comic book films go it didn't top Logan or GOTG2 for me. |
I think Raimi's Spider-Man movies are not very good in my opinion. I find the acting and the dialogue in those movies to be pretty bad. I was a fan of Sam Raimi long before he did Spider-Man and seeing him go from Evil Dead to Spider-Man made me go "WTF?". Even as a 11 year old kid back in 2002, I was like "Meh this movie was okay" after the movie was over.
I find his movies to be too corny and silly at times. I feel the Silver Age approach in his movies did not work for the 2000's decade if you ask me. |
Just got back from Homecoming. Hoooooly shit was that good. The second post credits scene was amazing too

But it really shouldn't stick around for the sequel. There's a double edged sword to this. People said they were tired of seeing the same thing done, so they did something different, and now people are saying it was too different. I think Karen's use in this movie made sense. It's something Tony would do, but after Peter proved he could handle these situations by himself when he didn't have the suit, I could see it being removed from this point forward. |
I was confused by the timeline placement in the new Spider-Man movie. If 8 years has pass since The Avengers, does The Avengers take place in 2009 or does Spider-Man now take place in 2020?

Sony confused me. A Venom comedy? I don't think that could work, people don't like Eddie Brock because he's funny, but because he's a goddamn savage monster Also some people talked about Spider Sense and I found this. http://www.ign.com/articles/2017/07/...sts-in-the-mcu |
Apologies in advance for how pretty much all of this is going to be blocks of spoiler text? :lol

I read Feige supposedly indicated that its something he might grow into in future films in which case great, but it's something I think is just genuinely lacking from Spidey films in general (and if is there it isn't very blatant, honestly the only one I can really remember it from is the first Raimi film). I have the same problem with the later X-Men films never really utilising Wolverine's heightened senses. It's just "claws and healing" half the time. EDIT: Yes I know its in Civil War, I meant solo Spidey movies Quote:

Saw Homecoming.
- I love the whole vlog bit in the beginning. - Loved the easter eggs such as Aaron Davis and his nephew, the Ben Reilly-ish Avengers debut suit, etc. - My spidey sense tells me that there will be people who will try to re-create the homebrew spidey suit for the cons and halloween this year - I love how they made Flash a snobby elitist nerd instead of trying to have him be generic and played-out bully jock - Vulture was just AWESOME, The wings, the whole costume was on point and gave me a newfound interest in the Vulture character - Michelle was funny whenever she pops up - Hoped to see Vision do a quick cameo at the Avengers HQ but no big deal Overall, this definitely is the definitive Spider-Man movie. |

I think, Civil War, Homecoming (and the two sequels), Infinity War, and Avengers 4 take place in the 2020 - 2022 area. That would fit better with keeping Peter in high school, since the earliest Homecoming 3 would come out is likely 2021. This keeps the established timeline of Iron Man taking place in 2010, Fury's Big Week (Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, and the modern day scenes in Captain America) in 2011, and Avengers and Iron Man 3 in 2012.
|
Your timeline is messed up.
Iron Man was in 2008. The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Avengers were in 2009. Iron Man 3 is Xmas of 2009 (they say 6 months after NYC). Winter Soldier happens in 2011. Civil War is in 2016 (they say they have been hunting Bucky for 5 years and Vision says, "You started this 8 years ago Mr Stark). Doctor Strange is right after Civil War (Stephen's call about an airforce captain who broke his back is Rhodie). Spider-man is 2017. That leaves Thor 2, Avengers 2, and Ant-Man. Ant-Man is not too long after Avengers 2, and Civil War happens shortly after Ant-Man. |
The more accurate reason for the 8 years later card is this:
It is extremely likely that the director made a mistake. Similar mistakes have been made in the past ( Stan Lee's cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (set in 2014) where he mentions being a FedEx driver (which was in 2016). James Gunn came out and admitted that the line was a mistake. ) You have to look at the whole picture and not just one movie of the Cinematic Universe The beginning of Iron Man 3 (confirmed by Kevin Feige to take place 6 months after The Avengers) starts off in 1999. In the movie Tony mentioned to a girl that he hooked up with back in 1999 that "There better not be a 12 year old kid waiting for me in the car." The woman goes on to say that the kid is 13. This puts Iron Man 3 NOT in 2009 but in 2012 (it is likely this woman had the kid prior, as Tony recalled that he met the woman on New Year's Eve 1999 and that being 12 years before. On top of that, it takes 9 months for a baby to develop in the womb). Simple math solves that one And we know that the movie takes place around Christmas time (the date is mentioned), putting Iron Man 3 in December 2012 and Avengers six months before in May or June 2012. Nick Fury states in Avengers that the events of Thor takes place the year prior, placing it AND Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, and the modern day events in Captain America: The First Avenger in May of 2011. The first Iron Man likely did not take place more than a year before that, as Vanko was shown to be nearly as, if not completely, as smart as Stark, able to build a miniaturized arc reactor and a custom suit. This easily places the events of the first Iron Man in late 2010. This means that mistakes were made in both Civil War (Vision stating that Stark revealed his identity 8 years prior when it was closer to 5 1/2 to 6 years prior, although this was one line and someone forgot that Iron Man was retconned to being in 2010) AND Spider-Man Homecoming (the 8 years later bit, which would place Homecoming in 2020, placing it 4 years after Civil War, when it is supposed to take place a few months after). As for Doctor Strange, the beginning takes place in early 2016, and Rhodey is not 35 years old, but is closer to 48 - 50 (his birthdate being listed as being in October 1968). While it is hard to find WHERE this birthdate is mentioned in canon, he is also a known member of the Avengers, signed the Sokovia Accords, and would not need the cover of "injured in a training accident" when he was in fact injured trying to bring in Captain America and his team. Even then, Civil War takes place in spring of 2016, while Doctor Strange is off trying to find a way to get healed or even (at that point) learning magic at Kamar-Taj. Next time you try to say someone is wrong, do your research and look at the bigger picture instead of just one movie. |
First off, I didn't say anyone was wrong. I said it was a bit off and provided my examples as to why. Just because you didn't like my explanation does not mean you had to get an attitude over it. Secondly, you are the one who is wrong. Avengers IS in 2009. I researched the timeline last year when Civil War came out.

Saw Spidey on Friday.
It was good. Nothing really bothered me too much. I'm a little disappointed that literally everything outside the web shooters were built by Stark, though. Was hoping he'd just tinker in Stark's lab and come up with some shit, but Stark did it all already. But that's just kind of a small problem I had, and I enjoyed the movie as a whole. |
Eh, timeline's just a bit of a mess right now. Which shouldn't be that surprising that mistakes will be made when trying to coordinate such a large projects. But I'm definitely on the side of Iron Man - Avengers taking place in 2008 - 2010. Some good discussion here of the timeline if you care to take a look. For the most part, might be best to just let it be a little hazy and sliding to just fit what you need in a given instance. Doesn't need to be super concrete.
Aaaanywho. Saw Homecoming yesterday and really liked it while watching. Got hung up a lot on nitpicks while talking about it with friends after the fact, but my feelings while walking out of the theater were of joy. It was fun and Holland did a fantastic job. |

I'm not really against Karen. I'm not a big fan of it, but she didn't bother me. It makes sense the suit would have an AI like JARVIS or FRIDAY. I wouldn't be too broken up if she speaks less frequently in upcoming movies, though.
I just don't like that the spider tracers, the signal, the web wings, the drone, and his impact webbing were all developed by Stark. I can buy that Parker wouldn't have access to the stuff required to develop it, but I would've liked if Peter was the mind behind that stuff. Like, perhaps in the Vlog we would see Parker telling Stark about all his different ideas on the ride to Germany or something. |
I didn't see this get a mention amidst the Spidey discussion.
The New Warriors (on FreeForm) cast: Squirrel Girl: Milana Vayntrub Mr. Immortal: Derek Theler Night Thrasher: Jeremy Tardy Speedball: Calum Worthy Microbe: Matthew Moy Debrii: Kate Comer Source: THR |
