Where To Get DVDs?
 

So as most fans attempt to do, I'm buying DVDs of the different series whenever I can. However, I'm having a few problems with this. And it doesn't have to do with subtitles or not, as I know that for older series, finding a subbed DVD is fairly difficult. No, I'm having issues finding a site to use.

The first two, and only Sentai DVD sets I have (Hurricanger and Gokaiger) I bought of the Ebay store TopDVDMall, which is stationed in Malaysia. However the last order I did from them (Gokaiger) took about two months to come, where as the first took like a week. And because of this, I though I'd take a break from them and try other possible places. However, the only stores that tend to sell Sentai DVDs on Ebay are based in Malaysia, and while I'm not that timid about importing, my dad doesn't think it's the best idea.

Now I know about, and have considered using the site Tokusatsu DVD. They have Sentai wise Bioman, Jetman, and Gaoranger through Boukenegr subbed. That would get me through a good chunk of modern era series, and even a few of the Showa and Heisei eras. But at the moment, they are not accepting orders due to people placing too many. So at the moment, they're down for who knows long and thus I can't order from there.

So I thought, why not ask here on a few site suggestions to purchase DVDs from? Now, I said in the beginning that I have no problem watching Sentai without subs (in fact I'll probably have to for the Showa and early Heisei eras), but I do enjoy having my subs. As it does keep me guided on what's going on. I don't need them to figure out what's going on, but the subtitles do help some.

Also, this is a small nitpick, but I do prefer having them in DVD cases. I don't mind OES/IOS sleeves, or CD booklets, but the boxes are what I like. You know, so I can display and show them off instead of keeping them in a booklet.

And obviously and most importantly, the DVDs have to be region free. Because well, I don't have a Japan DVD player, and have no knowledge how to hack mine into being region free (I tried it once with my last DVD player, and I killed it doing so).

So, any suggestions on to sites would be greatly appreciated.

What you are buying from Malaysia are bootlegs. If you are going to go that route, you might as well just go with fansubs so you aren't paying these aholes for stealing from Toei and Bandai. Nevertheless, I cannot help you on this aspect because I stopped buying bootlegs about 9 years ago.

If you want official DVDs (which you say you don't), you are going to have to have a Region 2 DVD player for DVDs (Blu-Rays in Japan are the same region) and go to Amazon Japan, CDJapan, or Anime Jungle.

As for an all region player, it isn't hard actually. Just go to a store, buy a cheap Philips DVD player, go to videohelp.com and type in a quick button press on the remote and you will have a region free DVD player. That is what I have. I bought a nice Philips back in 2009 for about $70 that had an HDMI port and took me 4 seconds to make it region free.

Let me ask you a question Dr. I've never bought a Region 2 DVD, and I did my bootlegs back in the days of VHS, heh. Man, those were heady days.

Do the official DVDs typically have English subtitles, or no?

No. We wouldn't need fansubs otherwise.

This is why I asked. I already said I haven't bought any R2 DVDs.

Also, you'd still need fansubs. No one would want to wait for the DVD, not in this fandom.

As I said, I have problem not watching with subs. I can pretty much find my way through the story without them. I just enjoy having them there as my own little Japanese instructors. And at times, it does help you get a more clear idea on what's going on.

No offense, but you are atypical.

Most members of this fandom get angry when a fansub is a day late.

So I've been told. I'm apparently atypical is a lot of things as my g/f watches Toku as well.

Please don't misuderstand me; I did not mean that as an insult or a dig. Watching untranslated tokusatsu is something I am very familiar with, heh! :D
