Play Arts Kai Discussion
Do you collect the Play Arts Kai line? 10 inches of hefty PVC goodness with clicky joints. Froom Finaal Fantasy to Street Fighter, discuss!
|
I am planning on starting with Arkham City Catwoman and Batman. If they turn out pretty good then I'm all in for FemShep, Tali and Garrus.
I actually do have a Vanille from a Play Arts line....can't say I'm too impressed. |

I have Solid Snake and Cyborg Ninja, they're cool but definitely need stands, and have random issues. Snake's head falls off very easily, both have thunder thighs and my Ninja had a stuck thigh swivel which thankfully I've been able to free. Their paintwork is exceptional. |
I wanted to pull the trigger on Grey Fox but the scale kind of put me off. If you ever get a chance, try standing Solid Snake up against a Play Arts Kai Batman. You'll get the feeling that the proportions for Snake are a little bigger than Bats, thus ruining my dream of a Batman vs Solid Snake showdown. I am basing this off memory the last time I fooled around with those two toys at a friend's place. I could be wrong.

You know, I was going to collect the Metal Gear Solid line, especially since I have Big Boss from Peace Walker. However, my friend got me Kratos earlier this month, and this happened:
Missing part of this boot: http://archivaria.com/DrKain/Kratos02.jpg His wrist was broken: http://archivaria.com/DrKain/Kratos03.jpg The store my friend bought it from could not do a return on it because it was a special order item and they are no longer able to order one to replace it with. I contacted Square the day I opened it (Aug 4th) and after waiting two weeks, they told me to send them pictures, I did, then they said those pictures were not showing up, so I resent them those above, and I have not heard back from them since. I told them all I want are replacement pieces. Due to this, my Kratos figure, while amazing, is a major disappointment and I just cannot justify spending $60 on Metal Gear figures and taking a chance of this happening to one of those. On the positive side, all that money for MGS stuff I was saving for my anime convention in two weeks can now go towards any Figuarts I may find or to the charity auction. |
Only one I own is Bayonetta, I own Nero too, but I got that signed by Johnny Young Bosch, so it stays in the box.
Was gonna buy the MGS ones, till I heard Hot Toys was releasing a Naked Snake, going to wait and see if they announce Solid Snake first, which they probably will. Definitely planning on picking up all the Mass Effect ones. I don't buy a lot of these figures, like the detail, but don't like the size or the lack of accessories. |
The line just keeps getting more and more expensive, while QC issues becomes more frequent, so it seems.
I wish they'd go back to the original scale, before it was Kai. Currently own... PAK: SF4 Cammy MG PW Snake MGS Solid Snake Bleach Ichigo Bleach Rukia Halo: Reach Kat PA: FF7 AC Cloud w/ Fenrir FF7 AC Sephiroth FF7 AC Tifa FF7 Tifa FF7 Aerith FF7 CC Aerith |

I plan on getting a few Mass Effect 3 PAK's, definitely want more Batman figures too. Also, Kazuya from Tekken will be mine. |
The Kai scale really has gotten way out of hand. I liked the size of my Kingdom Hearts figures. Now i can't get any Final Fantasy figures to be in scale with them aside from those release in the original KH Play Arts line :(
|
I have the Cammy figure and like her a lot. I have the Catwoman on preorder.
Generally though I've noticed the more anime-style figures are better than their "realistic" ones. The face on Uncharted Drake is a huge disappointment, and the pics that have been showing up of the Mass Effect figures are too, IMO. They remind me a bit of those old Capcom SF vs SNK figures, that came out in Asia the same time as the SOTA ones. They were well sculpted, but the paint app decisions occasionally baffled me, they looked like they were coated with dirt. Basically just coated with an unappealing brown wash. Similarly hen Play Arts tries for realism, they don't really do it correctly with the sculpts, then overcompensate with the deco. |

Also badlander86 I got my Batman yesterday and yeah he is definitely shorter than Solid Snake. Solid Snake is at least 10"+, while Batman might be 8" or 9". |

SF4 Cammy - Leg came disconnected, had to pop it in. MG PW Snake - None MGS Solid Snake - Neck easily pops off. I think his leg wasn't connected either upon opening. Bleach Ichigo - Didn't come with an open hand for his sword. Bleach Rukia - None Halo: Reach Kat - None, unless you want to count that thing wire that can easily break. I've heard of alot more from others though. |
Wow, it is a good thing I decided not to get the MGS figures. The only guy in the dealer's room selling them at my convention this weekend wants $100 for Solid Snake and was selling a ninja for $280.

Yeah, they said it would be his crappy Revengeance costume months ago.

Revengeance Raiden:
http://www.gunjap.net/site/?p=101795 Dark Knight Returns Batman: http://www.gunjap.net/site/?p=101785 Arkham City Robin: http://www.gunjap.net/site/?p=101776 They seem to be getting better with the human face sculpts, Robin doesn't look quite as bad from what i can tell. |
I Have three currently:
Male Shepherd (Mass Effect 3) Jorge (Halo: Reach) Carter (Halo: Reach) The shepherd is okay. I bought him directly from Square-Enix at NYCC and he came with a nice stand that holds him very well. The only problem I have with this figure is he has like this weird coppery sparkle wash over his skin. I can only assume they where trying to make him look like sweaty and dirty or something? http://www.tokunation.com/picture.ph...4&pictureid=58 I don't know if you can see it in the pic otherwise he's nice worth the $60 Jorge and carter got packed up when i moved to NYC and they are staying packed up. The first Jorge I got had a broken foot at the ankle Amazon.com replaced it which was cool. |
I just got Arkham Asylum Harley Quinn, and she seems pretty great. She has very large knockers, which seems strange, since in no other rendition of the character has she ever been that big, but I'm not complaining. :D
I haven't fiddled with it a lot yet, but so far the articulation seems pretty useful. After the pics at NYC I'm planning to sell all my 6" Mattel Movie Masters and get all the Play Arts Kai TDK/TDKR figures instead. They all look fantastic. I'm not sure I'll go back and get Arkham Asylum Batman or Joker, but I will be getting Arkham City Harley, and Robin is looking pretty good too, so I might have to get Bats and Joker, idk. |

Yes, I'm also curious to hear how that turns out, and see what other figures get announced in it. I'd be okay collecting both lines, honestly.
|
I picked up Commander Shepard today. I quite like him only issue with mine is that his left arm seems to be on the floppy side. The store I him from had Garrus and Ashely too.
Garrus looked great in person, so I gotta get him sooner or later. Ashley however looks terrible. But yeah, I'm satisfied with the figure and I can't wait to get the others. |

So I got my first Play Arts Kai figure last weekend...
http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...y/DSCN6023.jpg http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...y/DSCN6024.jpg http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/x...y/DSCN6026.jpg I feel I got my value for money in terms of size and the level of detail on this guy, but I wasn't quite prepared for how difficult pulling off action poses was going to be (well, in comparison to the usual figures I buy :lol). Still, its convinced me that if I can get him for the same price I might be attempted to spring for Revengeance Raiden when he comes out. |
Welp bad news everyone, the Play Arts Kai QC disaster struck me. I got a SFIV Ryu and Armored Batman this weekend. Armored Batman is awesome, except I think the factory workers screwed in the hole in his open left hand wrong as the hand is at an angle. Eh whatever I just use the left fist instead. Excellent figure.
Now Ryu. WTF. That joint on his right arm that connects his arm to the chest and provides a pectoral pivot, that thing SNAPPED off out of the box. LUCKILY I was able to fix it yet RETAIN the articulation! This is where plamo building experience comes in handy. I scraped off some of the paint from the contacting surfaces using an exacto knife. The joint broke because it was stuck(fused due to painted joints being attached while still wet). Luckily it was a clean break. After some sanding down, what I did was "dry fit" the joints back together, and saw if the joint would still move. Luckily, sanding down the contact surfaces decreased the tension/resistance. So I pulled out my trusty krazy glue and dabbed it onto the broken pieces. Held the pieces together. Every 20 minutes/hour or so I would move the joint so that if any glue seeped onto the moving parts, they wouldn't all dry stuck together. Woke up the next morning and it's FIXED! I mean yeah the pivot joint is looser than before but hell at least the damn thing I repaired isn't broken anymore! However BIG WTF with this happening. One would think the factory workers would at least have the decency to not put the figure together while the paint is still wet. If you guys buy these figures I would toss them in the freezer before moving for the 1st time. Leave them there for a few minutes. Ideally the cold will break the seal of the paint on stuck joints. If not, hair dryer. Ugh. At this point I am trying to fix my regular Arkham unarmored Batman. Loose right shoulder. Falls out of the body a lot. Ugh. |
Disaster #2. Remember how I mentioned that my Arkham Batman had a loose right shoulder? Recently I coated the shoulder ball joint in krazy glue, hoping it would increase tension. It did, but it still fell out. Lame. I suspect the primarily culprit is that the socket wasn't carved out enough.
So last night I decided I would coat the inside of the ball joint with krazy glue, and stick the ball in there, and move it while drying. However the glue started to bond quick and while moving the arm, SNAP there goes the pectoral joint. I'm pretty much screwed at this point. The peg for the pectoral joint broke off. Now I glued it back on but putting the socket joint back onto said joint is next to impossible since there is barely any clearance. Anyone know Square Enix's contact email for Play Arts Kai breakages? Also, anyone know of a good tool to cut away plastic? I have xacto knives and saws but I was wondering if a Dremel could work? This figure was AWESOME aside from the arm. Grrrrrr |
Hmm... Do I want to preorder Play Arts Kai KH: DDD Riku and/or Sora? Not used to buying figures so expensive, but they do look great...
|
I've been debating whether or not I should pick up Play Arts Kai Halo CE Master Chief. He looks nice, but I've heard of a few QC issues here and there.
|
I wonder if RE: ORC Lupo is worth picking up. I don't think she is a hot seller, thanks to the game. Just another mold I can use to custom another N7 soldier.
http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs71/f/20...c5-d5vw4o7.jpg Old pic, the helmet on Catwoman was photoshopped, but I have already begun working on it. More than halfway done sculpting it, but I need to make a few adjustments. Aiming to be done by the end of next week. Quote:

Any of you with BroShep successful in clearing the face of that ugly ass soot paint? Saw Solidus at my LCS for $120 today. Looks great but man...I wish these older figures came with stands! |

http://i807.photobucket.com/albums/y...ps2b47b11d.jpg So I bought these stands the other day, mainly for my ME sized figures. The model number for these ones are 20SM. I didn't buy from the site though, instead I ordered them off of eBay. Saved myself about $15 after shipping and I was able to get black (White was the only color available). 3" diameter base 4" Minimum height 6 3/4" Maximum height Size chart: http://www.theearthtoymall.com/clhefordesia.html eBay auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/FREE-U-S-SHI...-/160966611600 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://i47.tinypic.com/2rzqjo3.jpg play arts kai dark knight batman - ¬ü¨t*^¶¯°Q½×°Ï - Toysdaily ª±¨ã¤é³ø - Powered by Discuz!!! I think all of the Halo Kai figures are impressive.

Anyone pick up Raiden and Solidus? Wondering if there are issues to watch out for.
