Why so much hate for the MMPR movie suits ?
I noticed there is quite a lot of resentment on the movie costumes and i don't really see why so i thought i'd dig up some opinions by fellow fans here.
As a kid i really loved the movie, loved every second of it back then and even today i can still enjoy it. Altho i do notice and ackowledge the many errors in it now that i'm older and know a bit more about the behind the scenes turmoil....however, the movie suits themselves still aren't one of the issues for me and i don't get the hate they seem to get. i've read all kinds of things...the suits didn't stay true to the series....the helmets look weird....they look impractical....just a few of the comments i read over and over again. i thought they were really good and cool looking, the ystill had the classic designs incorporated into it, the helmets weren't THAT much diffrent from the tv show so i don't know what the fuzz is about, only pink helmet a little odd shape and even then it never really bugged me. i liked the gold coins chest emblems and overal they just looked like battle armors....you can't expect a big budget movie to still use the lycra/spandex suits can you....sure i loved those suits and it's a staple of the genre but c'mon, in a movie...it would look a little silly. For all the things that went wrong with the movie the suits will never be one of them for me, i'll keep on loving them no matter what anyone says, i would even love to own a nice replica suit for display. |
There's hate for them? I honestly wished they've have used them in the television series. Especailly when they got that Metallic Armor upgrade, would've been neat to get the movie suits. You know. Instead of the sparkly spandex we got instead.
|
The movie suits were bad ass. I always looked at the movie as Sabans intended vision of what power rangers was supposed to look like, we just can't afford this everyday. Lord knows sparkly spandex wasn't cool. The 3rd season of mmpr is kind of a blur to me anyway.

I'm not really a fan of the movie suits, the designs felt inconsistent and had that busy sinewy look that was popular in the 90's. Probably the biggest problem was that they looked unpolished and it felt as if they were falling apart at the seams (apparently this was true for the White Ranger's suit).
I think a good example of a more complex original suit is the Mega Mode design in Power Rangers Samurai. It felt complete, polished and didn't look as if it was pasted together from various parts. At least not to me. :) |

I agree with ComicGuy, I actually dislike the movie suits as well as the Samurai Mega Mode designs. But I think Mega Mode was better executed.
EDIT: Okay I actually didn't remember the metallic sparkly suits at all so I looked it up. The movie suits, although bad IMO are still better than the sparkly suits. Those are just......wow. |

Of course, from a storytelling, practical, in-universe, non-corporate, non-financial point of view, it was a definitely a waste. :lol |
They're. . .OK. They kinda suffer from that Batman-movie "let's bulk them up" thing that was all over the early 90's (was there a superhero movie or TV show that didn't get that kinda suit?) but they're not bad, though with the non-White Rangers, I always felt like they could have used a bit more white to balance out the colours, especially as they were so dark.
But effort counts for a lot, and since they didn't just dip the regular suits in glitter, I will give this one to "movie suits." The Mega Mode suits look awesome. I don't know they'd be feasible to do stunt work in, but they look cool, which is half the battle right there. |
I loved them and was always mad they did not carry those suits over to the third season. Hell, they should have carried all of the movie costumes (Goldar, Zedd) over to the freaking series. The only thing I never understood about the movie is who the pig was supposed to be. Why him and not Baboo or Squatt?
As for the suits in Samurai, I hate them to death. It makes no sense for the rangers to change their costumes while in the mecha. |
I always like the movie suits. Now that God-damned CGI Ninja Megazord on the other hand.........
|
Yeah, never got the pig guy.... I don't think anybody did. I just assumed the writer watched the pudgy pig episode when he was working on the script and wanted him around.

Man, they went through the zords way too quick on me. I know they were only following the footage of the show, but I did not get the Megazord and Dragonzord until my birthday of 94, then I got the Thunderzords (all of them) for Xmas of 94, only to get the Ninja and Falconzords for my brithday of 95. Anyway, now you guys got me wanting to watch the movie. Maybe I will go do that today. |
I do not like the movie suits. It was a needless and unnecessary change. The armor pieces, the coin on the chest, etc. Just, meh.

Of course I do. I love Kamen Rider and Power Rangers as a whole. :p Sentai...Not so much. Besides, a negative opinion is good. At least, that's what I think. As for the suits, I just found them ugly, and there was no point to the change other than "It's a big movie!" It's kind of like the Power Ranger toys, where all the male characters' physique's were those of bodybuilders (With the coin on the chest). |

As for the movie suits, I really liked them. They really gave the film a more epic feel that made it seem like more than the TV series. The little additions like the coins I really liked too because it meant there was an actual difference when they got the ninja powers. The only problem was it was all used so sparingly :( |
ok thanks for the opinions, i'm actually glad to see the movie suits aren't as disliked is i thought they were going to be on here. it's just that on diffrent sites anf boards over the years i kept reading negative comments and a lot of the same ones being echoed and it just gave me the impression that a lot of fans couldn't stand them since i never read much praise for them in comparison.
But when it comes to movie costumes i'm not a picky guy at all, i usually like something, then later find out how much dislike there is among fans and go " oh..really" inside myself :p examples include the rubber batman movie suits, i absolutely love them and i was glad they kept them when begins came out, then was sorta dissapointed when tdk changed it, even tho it's awesome in it's own right i kinda felt like a tradition was being broken. the rubber suits always screamed BATMAN to me and looked fantastic on film, then i started visiting more batman fanboards and comic boards and surely there was a lot of resentment and stuff like " it's fake muscles" and the fact that it is rubber was enough for some to crap on it....now for me, when i saw them on screen, i didn't even think about rubber, i just looked at it as batmans armor and i guess i'm just one of those lucky people that can easily suspend disbelief when it comes to stuff like that. Same with the daredevil movie suit, went to see it in theaters, loved it ! then afterwards started seeing a ton of negative complaints on how it was leather, looked like a fetish suit, didn't fit with DD's stealthy personality because leather would make sneaking around impossible due to noise.....then i went " omg people actually overthink this stuff THAT much..." it looked awesome on screen and to me that is all that matters. When people start complaining about why so & so wouldn't work in the real world, then imo they're taking it too far. But back on topic, sure it would've been nice if there was more white on the suits but's probably the only "complaint" i agree with, other than that i wouldn't change a thing and even more, if there ever was another attempt at a big budget rangers movie, i definatly hope they go the same route and design nice looking armors, wether it be rubber or leather or whatever else. infact, that amazing litho that was posted here a while ago with the red mmpr on it, is perhaps the best way of how i would reimagine movie suits since that picture gave me the impression that the suit was made of thicker, more leatherish material...might depend on your interpretation but that illustration didn't look like spandex at all to me, more like a mix between daredevil suit and amazing spiderman moviesuit material wise...and that COULD work without looking too bulky or heavy in future movie attempts |

Well that solves one question about Mordant. Now for Question 2: How did they get this: http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__...ant-goldar.jpg into that: http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Mighty-Morphi...IiPMhw~~_3.JPG |
Wow....I've never seen that before. Oh dear :lol

I always thought it was funny that Mariska Hargitay was slated to originally be Dulcea.

I think it's because I learned that after I had watched SVU for so long. that's what made it funny for me.

Anyway, I watched the movie yesterday. Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, if I didn't gorw up on it, I would say it is down right terrible, because it is. But I loved it as a kid and it does have some great fight scenes in it. Nevertheless, yeah, the CGI is extremely bad, but it still looks better than Transformers Prime. |
Does anybody know why the first movie was in its weird own universe but the 2nd movie was essentially a bigger budget season episode of the show?

I disliked the movie and everything about it honestly (except the orchestra MMPR theme). Considering how many re-writes and production issues the movie had, I'm surprised it ever saw the light of day. Wasn't it way, way, WAY over budget because of all the things they kept scrapping and redoing?
Someone tried to make Power Rangers in to something it wasn't, and it showed. Why do you think Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie was more or less an in-season 3 parter put on the big screen? BUDGET! |
Even with all its problems though, MMPR: The Movie is leaps and bounds better than Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie.

MMPR: The Movie had horrible costume changes, horrible CGI, horrible villains (I freaking hated Ooze), pointless subplots, that stupid kid, Zordon being some guy floating in the tube, and a stupid climax (Kneeing an enemy in the crotch to kill him is funny. This being the climatic battle that's supposed to showcase the new Megazord was just stupid). Turbo had Larago and the lack of explanation as to why they'd drop the Zeo powers. |
i love 6 high tech power rangers movie hero suits in mmpr the movie
|
The mmpr could have been saved with a)the inclusion Of Ninjor and b)a CGI budget of more than $20 dollars

Don't forget that Turbo also put in Divatox, who was the worst PR villain I had ever seen until Lothor, Mr Snow, and Disco Skeletor came into being.
I just love how Turbo (series) made a mention that Delphia had a twin sister and then that plotline was never heard from again. |

However Turbo had horrible villains, horrible costumes (the Pirahnatrons looked like grown men in undersized costumes), pointless cameos that served no purpose other than have Jason shout like a lunatic at the top of his voice, Larago and family, and no explanation for the Zeo powers being dropped. But most importantly, next to no morphed footage whatsoever. MMPR the movie had little of it as it was, but Turbo took it one step further. The only thing particularly impressive in Turbo was the awesome Megazord formation sequence. Personally, I'd take a subpar non-canon AU movie that actually felt like a movie over a subpar canon movie that just felt like a bad extended TV episode anyday. I was going to mention the fact that Justin seemed to only be the Blue ranger because he found out their identities, but then I remembered that worked for Rocky, Adam, Aisha and Kat too. So in reality that's probably all you need to do to be a power ranger :lol |
