Saban Brands Extends Use of "Power Rider" Trademark
1 Attachment(s)
Does anyone remember when Saban Brands filed a trademark use for the term Power Rider, and rampant speculation began that Saban was going to adapt a Kamen Rider series in the United States?
Well, in short, nothing ever came of it. The rumor mills thought that because of the crossover footage in Shinkenger (Power Rangers Samurai) with Kamen Rider Decade that Saban was planning to use that footage and then spin-off the appearance with Kamen Rider Decade as Power Rider. Again, nothing ever came of it. Thanks to our friends at Firestarter's Blog we know that Saban Brands has once again filed for, and was granted, the use of the name Power Rider. Will anything come of it this time? A popular thought here at TokuNation was that Saban would adapt over the Kamen Rider Fourze series. While unpopular with adults, the series was popular with the younger demographic and the amount of sales generated from the roleplay gear, etc., more than proves that the merchandise sold very well. Take in to effect that the setting is high school with teenagers, and the overall easy-to-tie-in merchandise, it still seems like a no-brainer. Speculate away, Tokusatsu fans! Power Rangers, or Super Sentai, is based off Kamen Rider, but with a "team" aspect as opposed to a "lone hero". There's been two attempts at true adaptions of Kamen Rider here in the United States: - Masked Rider (which was done by Saban back during Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) - Kamen Rider Dragon Knight (I forget the brothers who brought it over, but they tried to stay semi-true to the source material but it just didn't work out, never caught on in terms of popularity, and tanked in the ratings bad enough that the CW cut the final 3 episodes and they were only available online) A proper and dedicated attempt could pay off and prove to be extremely popular. |
I'd think they'd bring over OOO before Fourze, however both are ripe with merchandising potential. I just hope they never do W in America, as I feel that's just one series that can't be done right in English. I just can't imagine that show without the dynamic between Philip and Shotaro, and doing the same thing with English actors would just seem cheap (just my opinion).

With only 2 characters, at least that means there will be 2 decent-good figures to buy rather than 13 crappy ones like with Dragon Knight.
Also, the Fourze Driver already speaks in English. Maybe there won't be much need to change it... |
I would also hope for OOO first...then we could possibly get a mass of Head/Torso/Leg parts that would be interchangeable. Collect multitudes of each to create all of OOO possible forms :D
|
I honestly hope for OOO. OOO or Fourze. or Decade!
|
How will they account for the fact that Amanogawa is a very Japanese high school with Japanese students? Fourze shows us more of daily Japanese life than most Super Sentai series, and I think this would make a lot of footage difficult to use.

Really wouldn't be terrible if they wanted to just straight up translate/adapt. The story is pretty good, though they'd have to cut down a bit. And maybe making the headmaster, principal, and two high ranking teachers bad guys would be a bad thing. |

I just want to know what it is already...

Prepare for a long drawn out rant...
I don't think that they are going to adapt Kamen Rider Decade because its based on the anniversary of the Heisei era riders and Kamen Rider in general. Its not like the problem with Gokaiger adaptation where partial amount of the Sentai teams are unknown. NONE of the Heisei riders are existent in the PR universe. It would also pain me to reintroduce the Masked Rider warriors and shift their names around because Kamen Rider Nigo was missing (Riderman will never be adapted because of that Japanese face.) If they were going to adapt Decade, have them do it in Alien Rangers-esk storylines where that Rider takes over for a portion of the show. I don't want shoehorned in Power Rider warriors. It also is stupid that Decade would be in Samaurai because of that one episode he was in (ACT 21) and that was ages ago. Therefore, Saban must have been filming new footage with the Decade suit if they were going to introduce Power Rider(or throwing in a forced moment from earlier in the series in the finale). I highly doubt Saban would film original footage introducing a spinoff series near the finale of Samurai. I do have a theory about their names if they were going to introduce the previous to Decade Heisei riders. Kuuga- Kuga Agito- Bug warrior Ryuki- Dragon Knight (duh, already adapted) Faiz- Cybernetic Blade- Thunder (Thunder rangers inspiration) Hibiki- Darkness Kabuto- Beetle Den-O- Rails Kiva- Vampire If anything, Saban would adapt Kamen Rider W or OOO, why? 1 Toy marketability, Gaia memories and O medals just scream sales. They seem more inviting then cards to kids (I know Megaforce is using cards, but Toei and Bandai never does two toy gimmicks at the same time let alone conservative Saban and BOA). 2 Neo Heisei Riders can be independent from the rest of the KR universe 3 W and OOO actually ran parallel to Goseiger (PR Megaforce) |

I think Fourze has Double beat in marketability. |
I just don't think anything is ever gonna come of this trademark. I guess it's cool that they renewed it but they haven't instilled confidence in me that they'll use it.

Something will come of this. It takes alot of time, and alot of money, to trademark something in this country. The question is though: What will come of this?
Power Rider could mean alot of things. Even a new property for the US market all together. I doubt we're getting Fourze. Awesome as he is, there are far better names to call him than Power Rider. It could be OOO or even Den-O. Decade though? No. Decade becoming Riders that were never seen here wouldn't fly. We tried that once before, it's name was Masked Rider, and we buried it in a shallow grave as an example to others. |
Past riders being in Masked Rider was the least of that show's problems...

Maybe Saban wants to take a stab at original programs for Vortex soon. And with Rangers being at nick for the time being, maybe they want to take this chance at another Kamen Rider adaptation. I could see OOO being used before Fourze. The overall look of the character is cooler if you are trying to get kids attention. I love Fourze , but he might be too goofy to bring to the states, especially if you are trying to build a new franchise .
|
Look, I don't think Saban isn't using the money its gotten from Power Ranger Samurai's ratings and toy sales not to mention other sources of income such as Vortexx, conventions and Dvd sales for nothing. If we look at the last time Saban had a major amount of cash lying around (MMPR era) and see what they did with it. They used it to fund American footage for PR season 2 and 3, funding adaptations for Metal Heroes (4 seasons) and Kamen Rider. With Metal Heroes gone, I think Saban will adapt Kamen Rider.
|
i said this on a face book group as well Power Rider might not actually mean Kamen Rider it can mean lot of other Tokusatsu like Metal heroes or some thing its like he could mae a all new VRTroopers show or movie with the new gaven movie
|
I doubt its anything to do with the new Gavan movie, given this trademark was first filed over a year ago. If its certainly a new series altogether, I think that name Power Rider is a good clue of what it would be.
|
im just saying but it could be kamen rider more like it is but i hope its a new season of rider then old and plus the use of no henshin sequnce liek power ranger had due to samurai does lot in the show with write symbole it flys to them there morphed they can doit right now with kamen rider
|
If Saban is smart they'll see that Kamen Rider Dragon Knight was NOT successful because of too many characters (aside from other reasons). Decade would not be the smartest thing to bring over. W/Double just doesn't have the marketability to the kids. That leaves OOO and Fourze.
And I still think Fourze would be the better choice. |

lets just make the chair the messagog of the villain group and use the good old brain wash technique again
|
This might be subjective but I think Fourze definitely has the most fun factor for an adaptation and could probably sell toys a lot easier.
|
I got it! Powered Rider Double staring Bulk and Skull. Bring back the detective agency from Zeo and have Bulk as Shotaro and Skull as Phillip. If can work! :p
Seriously though, I think W is the best place to start because of future potential. W is for all intents and purposes the new Rider 1. Every "Movie Wars" crossover goes back to him now if only because Fountain X was created for W. Starting with W means they can more easily use the "Movie Wars" footage in the future. |
no way - saban want save power rider for young actors
