Not even 24 hours since the release of the awesome Pacific Rim trailer and the Internet already seems ablaze with excitement and anticipation! This incredible film of Kaiju emerging from a portal in the Pacific Ocean and the giant robot Jaegers built to defeat them, is currently set for a July 12, 2013 release but there's already plenty to whet your appetite on the official site Pan Pacific Defense Corps such as schematics of multiple Jaegers and even a viral video complete with voiceover by Transformers alum David Kaye.

I don't know. It looks more like they just ripped off Transformers and Real Steel (which was already bad enough) and threw flesh monsters into it.

The fact that Guillermo Del Toro actually calls the monsters "Kaiju" really gives me hope. He really seems to know what he's doing.

I guess I'm the only one that does not find Del Toro to be that good. Every movie I have ever seen of his has had some really good ideas, but either dragged on for too long, did not meet my expectations (such as Pan's Labirynth), or was absolutely terrible to watch (Blade II). The Hellboy movies are probably the only things I think he did good, but even those lost their enjoyability after a few viewings.

Anyway, it also made me think of Cloverfield, which was utter garbage.

In one of the several other threads Den-o made the remark that there would be an outcry of 'It's just a knock off of Transformers and Real Steel!'.

While similarities will be drawn to any film that features cgi robots, I can only hope that this one has a better story to accompany them.

Den said people would compare it to TF and Reel Steel, and call it a knock-off. Which it isn't.

Well the trailer is asking for it. I mean the first noise in the trailer is almost the exact same sound effect as the "vboom" sound Transformers has been using since 2007. It's hard not to think Transformers at least once.

Aaaaah, I wanna see this now!

Like I said in the thread before, the trailer pretty much ticked every box for me. I went from knowing very little about the film to it being one of my most anticipated movies for next year.

It also helps that GLaDOS is voicing the robots. Hearing Ellen McLain's voice is music to my ears.

I can't help it though, as that is what the trailer made it look like. At least I didn't compare it to Battleship's trailer.

The only thing I found cool in the trailer was hearing the VA for GLaDOS in it, but the rest of it just look like it is going to be a pretty action movie full of standard poor acting stereotypes (the trailer had the token black commander, the karate knowing Asian chick) and giant monsters. All it was missing was god awful rap music to signify that it is not going to be a good movie (like the new GI Joe trailer just did).

Not seeing the similiarities. Are they fighting other transformable robots? .. No, not that. Are they boxing on television for your PPV dollars? No. They're fighting giant kaiju. Is it because they're all robots and it's a lazy comparison? Perhaps, perhaps.

Alright, I know this thread's been buried for a while, but I wanted to bump it because this bit of news will likely excite most of us, being toy people.

Who's doing the toys? NECA! I actually called this when the license distributor for merchandise was announced, but regardless, awesome news.

Hell's yes. I love me some NECA.

NECA's a good ol' respectable company. They'd probably give the toys better attention than other toy companies, and I think their monster work will be epic! I'm just wondering if they have any experience in designing mecha. I can't think of any of prior mecha work of theirs. Do we know any previous examples?

No previous examples, but I think they'll do good.

And then they only do figures of the human pilot characters.
Because the world is cruel like that.

Never know. SRC or someone might pick up the Mecha. Besides, NECA'll do them. They have to know people want Mecha and Kaiju, not humanity. NECA isn't Michael Bay!

Well, after some digging, they've done this guy from Borderlands:

They also did some Terminator figures, which, if anything are pretty nicely detailed. NECA seems to be less consistent with quality control, so let's see how this goes.

I would love for a Japanese company to handle these too. Maybe some monsters may appear as MonsterArts or something. :lol:

What's the name of that one Bandai line that already covers a bunch of giant monsters and the mecha used to fend them off? It's something like SR KaijuAct, I forget...

NECA has plenty of experience getting down mechanical detail, between Robocop and Terminator alone, I'm sure they will do the mecha plenty of justice. And you have to be braindead if, given a lineup of mecha and kaiju that distinct and toyetic, you think it's the human pilots that need the merch most. That's not NECA - the guys who start a Left 4 Dead toyline with Special Infected, or the Prometheus line with two Engineers, or Borderlands with its most memorable robot mascot.

I figured it was NECA from the research I'd done a long time ago, but it's safe to say we're in good hands fellas.

With MonsterArts for the monsters? Should that happen, I predict my wallet will cry for mercy. :lol

NECA certainly knows which characters appeal as their character choices are often top-notch. Accessories provided are often pretty good too. They also have an almost impeccable attention to detail at their price points. I just really hope they don't mess up in quality control this time. NECA's figures have never struck me as being very durable.

I could see that. Claptrap feels like the worst among the three figures I own in that regard, and Gordon's legs don't feel like they're solidly attached either. The Boomer, on the other hand, grab him by one leg and he makes a fantastic zombie bludgeon that wouldn't even get his detailed paint scheme chipped.

It's definitely an area where NECA isn't consistent and liable to be the biggest worry in the line.

Something about you beating back a horde of Zombies with nothing but a Boomer figure makes me chuckle like nothing else.
