Collateral Damage?
has there ever been talks of the collateral damage caused by ranger fights?
I.E. damage monsters do before the rangers fight them or the giant monster/zord fights and the exploding monsters? Maybe even unnamed cilvilian live's lost. build damage? |
Not explicitly, but I do recall one or two episodes in season 1/2 of MMPR where the monster would be shown rampaging the city and someone would exclaim "Thank goodness the monster is only attacking the abandoned warehouse district!" or something like that.
No joke. They actually said 'abandoned warehouse district'. |
thought this was the case but i was hoping in later seasons like time force, lightspeed rescue or spd this might have happened more often. i know wlost galaxy they destroyed terra veture. wonder what the cost of that was?

…as a side note, being a real estate agent in a city where giant monster attacks happen frequently must SUCK big time. |

The collateral damage in Power Rangers and Super Sentai can reach ridiculous levels. It made me wonder a few times when monsters would shoot at Super Sentai mecha only for the mecha to dodge it, and hit the buildings behind! Would that really have been the right thing to do?
Power Rangers seems to usually try to pass off the buildings destroyed as empty buildings. Aside from the MMPR example already mentioned, there was that moment in SPD where a monster said something to the effect of "I love smashing empty buildings!" It can get quite ridiculous, but it's understandable to avoid addressing the horrors of massive collateral damage on a daily basis. Super Sentai, on the other hand, occasionally addresses the negative impact these monster attacks have on the population. I remember a poignant scene in Shinkenger where Shinken Red Takeru met a young boy who was sad. After cheering him up, his teacher explained that his father (I think) was recently killed in a monster attack, showing that civilians do suffer. I think the Japanese see monster attacks like natural disasters, unavoidable tragedies that they nevertheless stand up to with great resilience. |
im sorry but the monsters as natural disasters idea just cracks me up. you'd think the military would be forced to make up a unit designed to deal/ assist the rangers
|
No one's ever really talked about it. But I imagine it would be both good and bad for the economy. Plenty of construction jobs with the Rangers/Sentai around, but people also lose their jobs when the building they work in is decimated by a giant Kaiju. As for KR: The damage tends to be less massive and more local. A store front here, a few windows there. Though in OOO I do remember a bunch of Yummy's, or where they Greeed's? Babies bursting through the windows of a high-rise. And that giant insect one. But for the most part KR damage tends to be more small scale.
But aside from what Con said there doesn't tend to be alot of talk about it. I consider it like damage done in a Superman throw-down. People know it's there, but no one really complains. They just go about their day, fix the damage, and wait for the next round. |
Two big collateral damage things in Kamen Rider were-
Rising Kuuga's Rider kick taking out an entire city block. The Medal Vessel turning entire buildings into cell Medals |

While not in the same vein of building destruction, the Dark Roaches in Blade, who's sole purpose for existing is to wipe out humanity to make room for the victor's species to take over, probably did a lot of damage...But since those were evil, it doesn't quite qualify as collateral damage.
Oh, and didn't Kin/Ryotaro run through a building once? |
Oh, and I remember an episode of Zeo where Bulk & Skull were taking their detective exams. They would have failed but they were given passing marks because they completed it despite a giant monster attack.
I believe they kept on saying that it was 'just another monster drill' and thought it was a test. Funny to think that kids in school would have to practice Kaiju drills right with tornado drills. Same safety measures apply, hide under a desk away from windows. ...and laserbeams |
funny no memorials to all the lives lost in these senseless attacks

why after all this time is there no evacuation process?? i just finished samurai and we know the nighlocks have been around for centuries and pop-up enough that samurai rangers are needed for every generation. so why is the only evac plan run around like an idiot? or why have the rangers never shared their nighlock detection tech? almost every incarnation of rangers had a detecion device why not donate some of the tech to detec monster incusions and save citizens, even if you dont provide weapons early detecion could help people not get beat like a submissive spouse

It's interesting, though, that Shinkenger did have a some plan of evacuation. Usually while the Shinkengers fight, the Kuroko would assist in evacuations. I thought that was a great touch. |
teamwork honor hardwork. these are the lessons u will teach.
uh how bout evac procedures?? evac procedures? evac procedurs are for pussy's. now get out there and kick some weird aliens ass into next week. |
