Well I like the flashy graphics that Nihon uses. Nothing more and nothing less. I like that about their subs and I'd already downloaded the entire series through them and I hate to switch groups at any point during a series. That's pretty much it. It felt weird watching the OT subs after seeing 50 episodes worth of TVN.

That's fine then if you like splashy effects but wording it as "settle for"... well that was a bit ^^;

I actually prefer Over-Time's sub, when Nihon does the whole "Heroic Change" or "Pirate Squaron" that really bothers me, I'm perfectly fine with Gokai-Change and Kaizoku Sentai, not everything has to have a literal translation.

T-N doesn't translate those phrases. I think you are thinking of something else. And translating the words Kaizoku and gokai are not literal translations. They are straight up translations that need to be done. Why do you watch a fansub if you want stuff left in Japanese. I will never, in my entire life, understand that mentality.

That was GUIS, but Over-Time wins with me simply for being a soft sub. Can't wait to start watching Dairanger :D

Because some terms are just fine the way it is, like Gokaiger, I wouldn't want it translated to Heroic-ger or Heroic Ranger, no, just no :lol and my bad, yeah, it was GUIS that does the "Heroic change" stuff, but I watch Nihon's sub of Shinkenger, and sometimes there are so much stuff going on on the screen between the colors and the foot notes, I don't know what to focus on.

Remember during Shinkenger? Those colors were borderline trippy.

I watch a lot of things with those kinds of subs. I feel that when stuff is fully translated, it makes it seem sort of localized. It's hard to describe. Some things just don't seem right when translated.

To be honest I'm really picky about what I look for in subs. For example, I hate seeing honorifics in subtitles but at the same time some sub groups will swap out Japanese references and puns for American ones which I find equally as annoying. While I want to understand something in the best level of English I can I don't really want to have the entire joke localised.

Still, I'm grateful that there's such a variety of subs available to cater to everyone rather than being stuck with just one kind :)

That is the point of a translation. A translation is not to make everything literal. That would sound just awful. What is the point of not translating words that have valid translations. I mean if you prefer the sounds of Japanese words, then why not just watch raws?

Because some people (me included) likes the sound of the Japanese language, and knows some, but does not know enough to understand everything. Like people can watch Go-Buster Raws and get a gist of what's going on, but not have a full understanding till the Sub is released.

That's fine. You like the sound of the Japanese language. That isn't the point of a fansub or a pro sub. A sub is meant to allow people that DO NOT know the original language the show is in, to understand it in their own language. Not leave random words untranslated just because the subbers or sub fans like the sound of Japanese words. How can you have a full understanding of a sub unless it's fully translated? Not many people know what tachi and other words mean in English. A sub watcher should not have to pause the show to find out what some random Japanese word means.

I've seen that before. It just depends on how much you enjoy/understand the language and culture. Yes, translating everything is the ideal way, but some people enjoy it more when some stuff is left alone.

A similar problem with subtitles I have is suppose an English show/movie is dubbed into another language. I hate when the subtitles on DVD's and such for that is merely a transcript of the English script and not an actual translation of the translation. If that isn't confusing at all.

I'm sorry but no. You do not learn Japanese watching fansubs. You learn it by taking classes. Any real translator or person that has studied Japanese or any other language would say the same. You can not learn a language by watching fansubs. And again, like the other person, you miss the point. It doesn't matter what you perfer hearing. Subs are meant to allow a person to enjoy a show that does not speak the shows original language. Leaving random phrases and words in only caters to the people that think Japanese is a special thing that can not be changed, or to people that like the sound of Japanese words. To that I say that's great. But don't think that's how subs should really be.

Yeah this sums it up. The only reason I generally don't go the OT route is because their subs are a bit too casual for my taste and I don't really like just how much they translate. Example being Pirate Sentai when Kaizoku Sentai is just fine. An example of the casualness would be Fourze wanting to be bros whereas TVN translates it as buds. Its minor things that I base my preference on. I still really appreciate OT and the speed they get things done at alot.

That's not casual, that is real translation. But if you want to go that rout and call OT casual, than t-n is simply lazy. It's laziness to leave perfectly translatable words left in Japanese. And just exactly how is Buds any better than Bro's? I mean come on.

That's great that you think but please don't be rude to others because they have a different opinion on the subject. If someone feels they are learning or picking up the language that way (which I do as well) then they are. End of story. We all learn in different ways. Subs can be whatever you want them to be, that's why many different groups do it many different ways. They don't have to be anything but a preference. It doesn't matter what you hear but to some it does matter what we read and this isn't aimed at any one group or another either

I'm not being rude at all. I am stating a fact. You can not learn Japanese from watching fansubs. To learn a language you need to study it. Thinking you are learning from fansubs, when at times the fansub translator doesn't know Japanese fully him/herself, will just hinder you at really learning it.

We can like subs whatever way we want. You have your preferences, we have ours. Get over it, move on, and shut up. Trying to "correct" people for their preferences is about as rude as you can get.

An opinion can in no way be a fact, by the way. It is your opinion that you cannot learn that way.

As I have said about 4 times now, people can like what ever they want. I will not back down about the "learning a language from fansubs" thing though. IMO, it's insulting to those that take many years learning a language and those that teach the languages. It is not an opinion. It is fact. Ask translation professionals, language teachers, etc.

That's totally a valid point, and for people who are like that they have TV-Nihon or GUIS, I'm happy with what Over-Time is doing, so when I download, I prefer Over-Time :) Like ZeoRanger V said, I'm just happy that we have choices :D

I'm well aware you cannot fully learn a language in such a way. I know because I'm currently in a Chinese class, a language I could never learn in such a simple way. I have done a fair bit of studying of Japanese outside of subtitles and I have never taken a class. My understanding is extremely limited and will not get better without actual study. Chinese and Japanese have a lot in common. I guess it's similar to how one would pick up a language after living in a foreign country for a while.

Aside from that, I do completely understand your point. Although the different views on the matter is what resulted in the many many different fansub groups and their styles of subtitles. Yes, the way they SHOULD be subbed is how you describe, but not everyone is completely in the dark on Japanese now, even some people who've learned Japanese will still watch with subtitles because their understanding is not extensive. So the partially untranslated stuff works perfectly fine. This is one of those things that's best left alone. Watch what you like, and ignore the rest. I have the same outlook on the console wars. Everything now is personal preference. There is the way things SHOULD be done and then the way people LIKE it to be done. If no one liked it, groups like TVN wouldn't exist.

For Gokaiger, I also watched O/T (sometimes) to see a different take. Interesting to see two different takes, sometimes.

I'm sure that was rhetorical, but:

*Footnotes, lots and lots of footnotes
*Context, lots and lots of context
*Bug the translator in the forum

Also, every fansub group has strengths and weaknesses, but what qualifies as a weakness or a strength is different to everybody, so just pick whatever you like, and be glad the shows are getting subbed in the first place.

I think the point Drakkhen was trying to state is that you cannot truly learn a language from a fansub, and for a variety of reasons - for starters, the Japanese language has many words that do NOT translate correctly or literally, not to mention the use of "slang" in each language is entirely different. When that happens, translators take the liberty of trying to "Americanize" the slang, resulting in a different meaning or word than what is actually being said.

You may be able to pick up some common words and phrases, but like Spanish (which I took 8 years of) ... just because you know "biblioteca" is "library" and "querer" means "to want" and "yo" means "I" doesn't mean that "yo querer biblioteca" means "I want to go to the library" ... it actually translates "I to want library". "Yo quiero ir a la biblioteca" on the other hand ... (close but still not exact translation).

That's the point he was trying to make, and he took insult to the fact that those who have studied a language for years and years and still can't say they "know" or have "learned everything" are somehow up to par with people watching loosely translated fansubs.

Acknowledged. I never meant that I was on par with people who actually knew the language. I do apologize to Drakkhen. I know how that can be. I have similar sensitivity to other issues. And I personally feel this argument was more "stubbornness and misunderstanding" than hostility, but consider it dropped.

I never meant to say you could learn the language. God no. But you can still pick up on common terms, like you said, so you can learn from it no matter how small. He seemed to imply that was completely impossible.

:lol I never meant for anyone to get insulted, and if I did that in anyway, please accept my apologies, I thought we were all having a healthy debate, no offense meant. Like many others have said, we're so lucky that we have so much access to subbed stuff these days that we somehow took for granted, at least until the recent file hosting debacle sort of reminded us of that, and being that we have the freedom to choose who we prefer to watch, let's not forget and should give thanks to the people who (mostly for free) are taking the time to give the rest of us a chance to enjoy the Tokusatsu genre.

Next we should argue about our favorite colors for sentai teams (omg why can't they use the colors I like, like mauve and taupe) and why Toei is wrong wrong wrong for not using that awesome drawing I made a few years ago for an all music based sentai!!!
