Godzilla 2014 - Frank Darabont Finalizing Script, Legendary Pictures Sued & More
 

The big green monster will be returning to US theaters come 2014, but the path paved for his return has been well, a tad earth-shaking! First the bad news. The initial producers Godzilla 2014 were let go by Legendary Pictures and are now suing the latter. The LA Times reports that:
In more possibly positive news(this time), Stereoscopy News reports that Frank Darabont(of The Walking Dead TV series on AMC) will be finalizing the script.

Levitt has since turned down the role. So who will take the lead?

The rumor I have read is that Warners wants this to be their "Transformers" -- a "silly" franchise that they can a make big, effects-laden, summer tentpole franchise out of. I'm all for a new Amerigoji film, but it's going to be a hard road to get the hardcore daikaiju fans on board -- especially after the very positive response to what we have seen so far with Pacific Rim. You can't just throw a big CG monster on the screen and call it Godzilla like we got in 1998.

I agree. I want to get excited about this film, like really excited, but I just can't until I know exactly what we're getting. Godzilla 1998 is a pretty good monster flick, but Godzilla it ain't.

Does anybody really give a rats ass who the male lead is? Do yourself a favor Warner brothers and hire a nobody and save a few million.

While I don't disagree, the reasoning is that having a name star will attract people who don't like giant monsters. "Oh, it's that monster movie, but I'll go see [BLANK] in anything! Take my money!"

Or something along those lines anyway.

Please don't let this turn into a cash in franchise...

Considering that Warners' previous genre franchise is finished with no real possibility of being restarted any time soon (Harry Potter), if this film is successful it will most likely become their new one. It's an incredibly recognizable property that lends itself well to effects-heavy productions.

Of course, it has to be a success, first. That remains to be seen.

As long as it's not a giant cg iguana,I'll watch it.The reason I didn't like Zilla is cause he's too small,nimble,and quick.Also no radioactive breath.Godzilla always needs to be a huge,lumbering force of destruction.The only story needed is the citizens of whatever city is being destroyed at the time finding a way to stop him.Not a big plot twist at the end where Zilla lays eggs....literally and figuratively.

Agreed. I'm not one to pray a whole lot, but I do pray that this movie is good and worthy of getting pumped for.

Godzilla: The Series showed us that Zilla/GINO was a fine monster. Just not Godzilla in any sense of the word.

That's why most people didn't like it.Sure it would make a fine solo monster,but calling it Godzilla and even marketing it as being huge and destructive,then showing what we got,I'd be upset too.

Well, the human aspect of the film was beyond terrible as well. An absolutely abysmal cast, top to bottom, spouting off insipid dialogue. The monster could have been the greatest diakaiju of all time and the movie itself still would have been awful.

Toho was very smart to give Zilla an official name.

Anyway, from what I understand this Amerigoji is supposed to look a lot more traditional Goji-ish. Which is good on pretty much all fronts.

You know what would be cool? If they decided to scrap a live action film, and make it stop motion.

I'd watch a movie in the style of the animated show honestly if it was able to pull off things that the live action just couldn't budget.

This one better not get killed by 2 missiles that blew up a bridge, wasn't that what killed him in the movie?

Are they actually done with Godzilla in Japan or will it eventually resurface if we make another crappy one here.

They're not "done", Toho just likes to take excruciatingly long breaks.

Speaking of the series, where I can I watch it? Seriously, I've always wanted to watch it, especially cause I've heard it's way better than the movie. :lol

Anyways, isn't Toho more involved in the making of this movie? I swear I read that somewhere, but I could be wrong.

Considering the general failings of the Vs. series of movies from Toho, it's not much of one :p

Godzilla: The Series is available for Watch Instant viewing on Netflix (though it is just called "Godzilla" when you search for it). I think there are also minisodes available on Crackle.com.

For what it's worth, the original Godzilla cartoon, with Gadzooky, is also on Netflix to Watch Instant! :lol

If you watch that godawfuldooky cartoon watch it first then wash the taste out of your mouth with the newer animated series.

I'm also for a MID animated movie ha, the art style they used on those series just looked neat.

I still need to watch the series myself, since everyone has such high praise for it.

In the '98 movie, which I assume is what you're referring to, he did breathe fire.

No, he kind of blew on some cars and they errupted into flames, but he didn't actually breathe fire as an attack.
