Let's Watch Wednesdays Week 6 Gekiranger 16-18
Mele has revived the Kenma of the Sea Rageku. What harsh lessons will she bestow on Mele and Rio? And Jan is about to find his own Kensei and a new Gekibeast. Join the discussion here!
Shakkin! |
What exactly is Shakkin? It's vague like Jan's random words, but unlike zowazowa or wakiwaki, I can't pinpoint what exactly Shakkin is or how there is training in it.
Livelihood? "Wax on, wax off!" Playing? "Just a Spoonful of Sugar!" Trance? Mastery by engrossment in an activity. Shakkin? The closest I can get is "training in blind passion" but that's probably not what Shakkin even is. Or maybe Shakkin is Shaped Like Itself. |

Yes, I'm aware Master Mao has a real name, but he's dead for most of the season. Yes, I know Master Finn's name is referring to shark fins. I don't care. It sounds better than Phant, Swoop, Rilla, Guin, and Lope. And more like a name a human would have. Oh wait, that's right. There IS a human named Finn! http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...nntheHuman.jpg |

Anyway, Mele also had stuff to do, too! I liked that Rageku isn't just ignoring Mele like Kata was, and sees the potential in her. It's a nice bit of character for her and continuing her growth from when she took out Braco. Quote:

Another good arc of episodes. Here are my thoughts, SHAKKIN!
Enter Rageku, the Kenma of the Sea. And quickly we see she's no better than Kata, by poisoning Rio and forcing Mele to fight Shafu. We learn that she is the master of jealousy, by forcing to make Rio helplessly watch Mele beating Shafu in a fight. Though as with Kata, he manages to overcome her technique and manages to beat her in their little showdown. Also like Kata, she has an underling that serves her with Dokariya, who proves to be a formidable opponent with his ability to posses bodies. On the Gekiranger side, we meet the 4th Kensei, Sharkie Chan. He's a rather nice guy who isn't afraid to cry and specializes on the body part of the triangle. I rather liked that his training with Jan was accomplished rather quickly with the hijinks on the rive. As with Retsu, I like the Geki Saber than Jan aquired, but it feels like a natural extension of his fighting style with the Geki Nunchackus. I was annoyed that Bat Li and Elehan were hard on Sharkie getting posessed, but Jan resisting Dokariya's possesion proved that the body element of the triangle shouldn't be looked down upon. And GekiSharkTouja is cool, but sharks always make things cool. Now that the new character talking is done, I'll touch a few key moments. We learn about the GekiRin Rebelion, which caused the schism between the 3 Kenma and the 7 Kensei. We get an awesome character moment out of Mele as she uses Mugen Reppa on herself in order to fight Shafu. Once again she demonstrates she'll do anything for Rio's sake, even if that makes putting her life on the line. And then we have the touching moment of Rio stopping Mele from delivering the final blow. He might have been jealous that Mele was about to beat Shafu, but he didn't have to pull her into the cooldown hug as well to stop her. Finally, the human pyramid GekiSharkTouja was amusing. And oh man at that next episode preview. I know what that means. It's going to be REEEEEEEEEEEEALLY hard not to watch next week's batch of episodes before Wednesday. This is when GekiRanger really starts to shine. |

Master Gwen? Sure. Guinevere? Of course! But otherwise, one shot with penguin powers. Michelle Peng had more of a point at least. And she was a skateboarder, which explained the awesomeness of a penguin on a flying skateboard. But really, does "penguin on a flying skateboard" need explaining? |

How does everybody normally watch these? So far I am using YouTube as my go to for catching up.

However, I know it's not the most popular method, and lots like to watch them online... |
I always torrent my stuff so I can start and stop whenever I want. Plus we've got a killer broadband connection so I can downloading a whole series batch at a time when I need to. For shows like this I already have the entire thing on my hard drive so it's just a matter of re-watching it.

Hm. Might hafta check that out... Or just get a Wensday off work to watch in enough time!

I definitely feel Mele and Rio over shadow everyone else in these episodes as this is where their characters became really well developed and excellent. I love how each one is being trained differently and each one has their own reasons for wanting more training. It is a shame that every series since has not developed their villains are much as we had here.
On the other hand, Sharkie is decent, but the mech head is just awful. Still, I cannot help but thinking of the Jaws music every time I see Sharkie. I do like the swords Jan gets from him even though I prefer Bat Li's fans. |
I just finished episode 18.
The Geki Sabers just might be my favorite swords. They flow so wonderfully and the super attack being a high pressure water jet is just awesome. Anyway, the brief moments involving Rio was a nice bit. I really can't wait for the continuation! |
Wrote these after I'd watched them yesterday.
16: A really nice Mele episode, really shows how badass she can be and just exactly how devoted to Rio she is. Rageku is alright, the best part if her appearance was learning about how the Kenma came about. I always just assumed there was always an evil school and a good one, not that it branched off of Geki, very cool. 17: oh wow Sharkie is awesome. He's just really fun to watch and his training is more practical. Geki saner are also pretty cool being offensive and defensive. I thought we were going to a have a single episode as everything seemed to be progressing fine, but no, Geki Shark gets possessed. Thats not a bad thingm ut was a refrshing change of pace to the other Kensei 2 parters. That's also a very clever power for a hermit crab, kudos to the writers for that. 18: Geki shark Touja looks ridiculous. The Geki blades combining is cool though and it's finisher is awesome. Bat Li and elehan worrying about Sharkie turning to the 'dark side' was also a nice touch, makes sense that some of them could, why they didn't assume he was just possessed again though I don't know... |

Also, one minor nitpick about the Sharkie training arc, no use of the awesome insert song that Ran and Retsu got when they first used their weapons. Though I did like how it went from light instrumental version of the Gekiranger opening to the full on opening version when Jan transformed to take down Dokariya. I LOVE how this series uses music, especially during next week's batch of episodes ;). |
Obligatory SHAKKIN!!! :D
It goes without saying that Sharkie is now my favorite Kensei.Jan and Sharkie's student-master relationship worked so well and I loved just watching the two of them get along.Ep 18 really made Elehan and Bat Li look bad,I just don't get why they treated Sharkie like crap.Shafu said it himself that masters aren't perfect.Just a really weird writing choice to add some conflict. And I wasn't too big on Geki Shark Touja,I love the finisher, but the giant doofy helmet. Why do all auxiliary fish mechs always become giant hats? Oh yeah,so Master Shafu used to be human...aaaaaaaaand so were the Kenma and other Kensei...huh...okay. Rageku,I like that she's taking interest in training both Rio and Mele. Her Rinju Jelly-ken is cool, but I kinda feel it's just a recycled version of the toad Venom-ken's technique(just the whole untouchable thing). It was bugging me every time I heard her talk until I looked it up...she's voiced by Shroud...man,that's so cool. Mele...just MELE.There's not much I can add to that, she's really looking to be my favorite Sentai villainess.Well I can add in one thing...Mele's garters...hopefully I wasn't the only one to notice that...didn't think you could show a blatant upskirt shot like that... One other thing, they used the Geki Bazooka...and no pork cube stew :cry |

God bless you, Gekiranger. :D |
With my computer problems, I've fallen a bit behind. I just finished 12. I hope to be caught up by the end of the week. Every episode I watch reminds me of how much I love this show.
