Godzilla 2014 Film to use Suitmation?
1 Attachment(s)
The Godzilla Movie Site has posted an interesting piece of info. Apparently a rumor has been floating around since February that Toho (Godzill's license holder) may require Legendary Pictures, which is producing the Godzilla 2014 film, to use actual suitmation in filming! Suitmation being the use of actual physical suits with actors in them (like Ultraman, Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, etc) rather than CGI.
This rumor hasn't been confirmed by Legendary Pictures or the films' director Gareth Edwards, but it would stand to reason that Toho would like to see suitmation in this film over the more generally used CGI. This keeping with the roots of the classic Godzilla franchise. The suit design attached to this article would certainly imply that Toho wants to see this happen. Godzilla Movie |
Rumor: Godzilla to use suitmation?
Godzilla 2014 may utilise suitmation as well as CGI
This would be interesting if true. Done well, in-suit actors can really look amazingly real. |
Not that big of a deal. The 2004 Godzilla used a mixture. Like when Zilla bust through the building at the start of his rampage? Guy in a suit.

As much as I want to say that I'd prefer man in suit over CG, it really doesn't matter to me.

CGI usually works best when it's used with practical effects. Probably the most recent thing I can think of were those black aliens from Attack the Block.

The problem with a mixture isn't the suit actor, its the cgi. It's got to be spot on to make it believable.

Hell, remember Bumblebee in the first Transformers movie? The CGI was MORE convincing than the actual full sized model. Also, the baby raptorzillas were full dudes in suits a lot of the time, and they had a big, not to scale obv., Godzilla animatronic. There was a cool video I wish I could find. |

Anyway, with current technologies, CG and Suitmation could work. Worked well enough in most Millennium Godzilla movies. |

Also, don't bring up Bumblebee.I didn't mind the movies,I just didnt like the robotic insect blender mix that beeped and whistled.lol |

If the rumor is true and that is what the suit looks like.....then its already better then Zilla.
|
That drawing almost looks like it could be an early design sketch for the first millennium Godzilla suit.
|
What if it's a motion capture suit?
|
If that's the new Godzilla's look then I will be fine with it. It looks like they took the 1998 Zilla design and blended it with all the suits from the period of Godzilla 2000 to Final Wars.

Turns out that piece of art may be concept art from Godzilla 2000 and not this new film. Darn. Well, at least it looked really cool.

First off, a full size prop or anamatronic is not really "suitmation." By that logic, King Kong 1933 was partly done with suitmation.
That having been said I would love to have a few scenes of the new G film done with suitmation. Do I think it will happen, or happen enough to really be considered a "man in a suit" movie? No, not in 2014, and not with the budget this movie has. It'll be a CGI Amerigoji, and we can only hope that he ends up in a better film than the last Amerigoji did. |
