Thus far, what do we think?
Six episodes seems like enough to get a fair impression of the series, so what are everyone's thoughts on the quality of Kyoryuger thus far??
Personally.... I like the series. The designs are very interesting, the characters are entertaining (with members playing off one another pretty well) and the action is very nicely shot. ITs a bit too early to judge the overall story process but I do think Kyoryuger's not that well off in terms of pacing; they don't seem to space things out a bit to leave any real emotional impact. That could be even more noticeable in the future. |
The designs are decent-inspiring, the heroes are fantastic, and the villains are garbage.
|
The characters are fantastic, the villains pretty interesting and the action superb. My knocks against it would be the stupid samba dance, how fast paced some of the episodes are and Kyoryuzin when he's anything other than Western. ESPECIALLY his transformation sequence.
The positives definitely outweigh the negatives, but as much as I'm liking the show I still don't feel particularly attached to it and I can't work out why. |
This show is absolutely beautiful in every measuerable way. The Suits are Epic, the Actors are Wonder, the Villians are Dynamic, and the Mechs are more Epic! And I am loving we're getting a real Gattai and another CG. Canderrilla and Luckyuro are by far the best of the DeBoss, and I really don't understand the hate towards them at all. Must have Figuarts of them, MUST!
This show has made me replace Tensou Sentai Goseiger has my favorite Sentai. From King, down to Turin, love them all so much. Not that I'm replacing Moune anytime soon. So kill that thought. |
Kyoryugers is fast becoming one of my favorite Sentai shows of all time. Granted I only watched Shinkenger, Goseiger, Dekaranger, and Gokaiger so far, but Kyoryugers have the right mix of cast, costumes, mechs, villains, and action to make each episode fun to watch. I am hoping the quality will only go up from this point on.

It's...Adequate. To put it.
In terms of character, it's great. I like that, while common character archetypes, they're not cliched. The Kyoryugers are all interesting to watch and their comedy plays off each other really well. They each have room to grow, but it does seem like they're doing so. The designs are hit or miss. The costumes have grown on me, but Kyoryujin still has not, with Western being the only one I like. The Deboss, design wise, are all over the place. I can't stand Canderilla's design, while the rest just vary from decent to meh. The action is alright. Flashy and fast paced, but it seems to lack impact. The fight scenes really just seem to be them flailing around until they use the batteries to finally get some kills. It is still fun and energetic and enjoyable to watch, though. However, the biggest flaw is pacing. As in, this show has no idea how it works. What should be delicate character moments get 4 minutes worth of screen time, while the monster parading around gets 6. Issues get resolved far too quickly for anyone to believe there was ever a real problem, and the characters connect seemingly off screen, going from antagonistic to aloof to "One of the gang" over the time span of one episode (IAN). It takes story arcs that could easily fill up two or three episodes (Nossan's family, Ian and Souji's alternate ideals, etc) and shoves them into one episode, along with another issue of the day. Coupled with the villains antics and screen time, these issues just get quietly resolved with hardly any fanfare. In all, Kyoryuger is a fine series, but it moves too quickly for it's own good. I'm afraid, with how quickly it's bringing up and resolving stories, that it's going to meander during the middle like Shinkenger or OOO. And it keeps putting Canderilla on screen. That's the biggest crime it's committing. |
I freakin' love this one. Honestly, so far it's on track to be my favorite Sentai/Power Rangers series yet.
The characters are lovable, hilarious, and badass all at the same time, without being too much of any one in particular. It's fast moving, but I'm liking that so far. It's a stark contrast to the current Power Rangers season where they spend a whole episode on a single character and we learn next to nothing about them. It's a high energy show, and I think it would risk that quality if they slowed it down for parts. I'm really liking the Kyoryuzin as far as mechs go. The Gabutyra + two others combo seems like a great idea, since it means they'll have several options for specialized purposes, as opposed to just continually adding every new zord they get to the pile. That got a little out of control in Samurai/Shinkenger. In this case, I think it was a smart move to keep it simpler, at least for early on. The villains are alright too. A couple of them seem awfully benevolent for being antagonists of the series. It's hard to see a fun-filled spy and a joyful knight as being particularly evil. I laugh every time Luckyuro brings out that watering can though. The others are fairly typical for sentai villains. It's nice that they're tying in some actual history, making debo monsters responsible for the plague, the ice age, extinction of the dinosaurs, etc. Best of all, it's just a blast to watch. I'm sure it's not hard to find flaws with the plot or the characters or the pace, but every episode is just such fun to watch. I can't ask for much more than that. |
It's fun and I like the cast a lot but I'm not really invested in the story at this point. I enjoy the episodes but I am starting to drag my heels on watching it and really don't have much interest in discussing it.

I like it thus far. Far more energy than Go-Buster. The rangers are interesting. The villains are cool, but outside of the ending moment with Sorrow in episode 4, they are pretty much just standard fair. Nothing wrong with them, but nothing stands out either. The only real complaint I will say is the actor for KyoryuCyan was pretty awful. It seems like he was phoning it in, especially when he would cry out for Anklowhatever.
Actually, that is one thing about the show, I can never remember the names of any of the villains or dinos, so I've pretty much have resorted to just saying, the T-Rex, the Triceratops, The Sorrow, The Fury, The Joy, etc. |
I don't get how you can't remember the dino names.
It's not like they say them every 2 minutes or anything. :lol |
I couldn't get passed the second episode honestly.
It was just too..I dunno, childish for me I guess, as much as I hate to use the term. The dancing was painful. The sound and effects and music were atrocious. I just couldn't take any more of it. It sucks to because I REALLY wanted to like the series going into it. It would have been my first Sentai (aside from Akibaranger), I liked the dinosaur theme, I like some of the designs, and it had some cool concepts, such as the villains. But it is just aimed way too much at the younger demographic than I can take. Even Fourze managed to work for an older audience, and it had some really great, dramatic episodes. Not sure how the recent episodes have been, if anything has changed, but I really really doubt it. May check in again after the halfway point. To those of you that enjoy the series, power to you and I hope it continues to entertain you. And I would quite love to hear if and when the series does change its tone a bit, maybe it can draw me in again as well. |

I absolutely love Kyoryuger and can't get enough of it. The action scenes are fantastic and make me excited for each new episode every week.
The show also has some of the most eye-catching designs in Super Sentai. The villains and MOTWs are always great to watch and the suits, mecha, EVERYTHING just look awesome on-screen. The characters are also pretty great. I don't find a single one particularly boring, which is probably a Sentai first. I have heard some people are concerned about the pace, and while I don't feel it, I do hope they don't descend into filler later on. I'll just trust that Riku Sanjo delivers another brilliant series. Quote:
Fourze may be childish, but by virtue of being Kamen Rider, it also has a very developed world and characters. Super Sentai usually dispenses with that (yes, Matrixbeast, I know there are some exceptions) and as such sometimes it may threaten the suspension of disbelief when the whole show feels like a Saturday morning cartoon. I feel it's simply just how Super Sentai does things nowadays. |
My thoughts on the show in tl;dr form?
It has potential. Lots of it actually, however it being a show that is for kids, and specifically meant for kids... It is possibly only going to stay there, and not have any form of dark twist, and thus remain at a constant Quo. Though, I could be wrong as I do see potential. |
While I do love when Sentai takes itself seriously, I can enjoy the funny, simplistic ones (Hell, Kakuranger is probably 2nd or 3rd for me).
The problem with Kyoryu is that, outside of Ian's brief background snippet in his episode, every story that has been brought up was resolved in the same episode. Unless the writer has something big planned, I'm afraid they're just going too quickly. (Also, why don't posts in this subforum appear in the "New posts" box?) |

I for one have enjoyed the absolute hell out of the series. The ranges are fun and energetic, they really come alive on screen as civilians. And in costume their voices match perfectly to the suit actor mannerisms. The suit designs are top notch as well, I always love the semi armored look so it's nice to see that carry over from Beet and Stag Buster a bit. Also nice to see the dynamic camera angles for mecha battles carry over from Go-Busters. The villains, unlike for most people, really work for me. In preliminary scans I thought I'd hate them based on appearance but I actually really really like them. Aigaron is the most interesting with his tie to Ians' backstory. Candelera and Luckyuro are fun as well, I like that even though their emotion is looked down upon by other Debos they're the ones responsible for growing large monsters. My parents used to say when I was young that if they sprinkled water on me I'd grow like a little tree. So seeing a water make monsters grow strikes and odd familiar chord with me. And after the recent revelation via magazine scans that Dogold is actually a brainwashed Kyoryu Gold I think I'm gonna dig what little more we'll see of him. I don't know if anyone else has pointed this out yet or noticed but you do realize that the Debos generals are based on the Wizard of Oz right? Aigaron is tin man, Dogold is Lion, Luckyuro is scarecrow, and Candelera is Dorothy. The Wizard is in there somewhere but I don't know exactly who it is. The mecha battles and designs are superb, the rangers are great, I find the villains interesting, and I love the overall pacing. Considering I don't as care much for Riku Sanjo's previous work as much as other fans I have been pleasantly surprised at how much I love this show! |

It's a lot of fun. It feels a lot more consistent than GoBusters did, which seemed to go all over the place and occasionally settle down into something watchable.
I guess it all comes down to the question of whether Kyoryuger's consistency is to one's taste or not. |
It places 2nd as one my favorite sentai to date with Go-Buster still being the first, I love the silliness and their roll calls in every episode so far.
|
While I can see the Oz reference from a design standpoint, I'm really wishing they did more with it. Cowardly lion reference is a super pissed off monster? The meek and subdued Dorothy reference is a total airhead? Nailed scarecrow, though.
It would've been neat if their apparent Oz reference was more than just visually. |
That Oz reference is pretty neat. I guess Chaos is the wizard? :/ I can see reviving generals = granting wishes.

So far its been a fun ride. Haven't been this engaged in a series since go-onger. Though I do agree about the pacing problems. There's been alot of story potential and character development opportunities missed because of it. I'm really worried we might have a dreaded mid season slump that's plagued resent series. Its a shame some folks don't like the villains. Save for Enter last season we haven't had such a lively group since Go-onger.
|
I like the characters, all of them good or bad, so much character to them. Okay I don't like Dogold. Crappy design and he's boring. Also put me in the camp that adores Candelleria and Lucky, they're so much fun and i have high hopes for them (lets face it, unless the others steal his watering can, Lucky isn't going anywhere.)
Action is good in the fight scenes, and the humour is pretty good. I think the last episode moved a little quick, and definitely wasn't what I expected from the preview... I just hope this is a fluke and we pick up again with a little more plot going forward. Also, Imma go ahead and say King's dad is Chaos, just because it's fun to speculate =p |
I dig the show so far. Kinda makes me think of a Fourze-ish Sentai series. I would like to see some more plot development but that usually comes after the sixth ranger.
|
I think the Oz reference is more coincidence then anything else. Degold isn't a lion at all, he's based off Raijin, and Candelia doesn't have anything to do with Dorothy apart from both being female. Not to mention that the characters of Wizard of Oz have very specific personalities and emotions tied to them, while the Deboss are all based completely on emotions and none of them actually match up to their Oz "counterpart".
Now, Candelia is the best thing about Kyoryuger. She's hilarious. Opinions or whatever, if you think she's bad, you're wrong and should feel bad about yourself for being so terribly, depressingly, catastrophically wrong. Harrumph! :P |
I am enjoying it, hands down...though I freaking HATE the Samba!! It makes sense for King...I'll give it that...hell he even fights using Capoeira...maybe Amy...but the rest? How can I take Green or Black seriously when the are all brooding and angry...then just bust out and dance?
Candelia...I don't know why but she reminds me of Clay Doll form from W...which isn't a bad thing considering what happened with her...all else I love. I doubt we will see Cyan again alas...though I liked his concept of a warrior from the teams past...his helmet reminded a little of Deka Master...I would have liked to have seen him sporadically in future episodes, kind of like Drake was in Kabuto...not a sixth ranger, but just that extra guy for those times of awesomeness... |
This show is a thing that happens every week. That's pretty much it. There's nothing in the show that brings me back for more. I'm only watching it out of habit.

I feel like they have taken hints from what made Gaoranger and Abaranger good and then mixed it all up based on what I have seen so far.

gold is cool

This is one of the first few Sentais I've watched and I extremely love it. It's so silly and amazing.
|
I'm loving Kyoryuger. It's fun, refreshing, has nice, simplified, awesome looking zords and characters that are amazing!
|
I was already pre-disposed to like it, but I have to say each new episode makes me love it even more. I really hope they maintain this standard.
