New to Toku.. Kinda
 

Hey guys, I'm new to the board and to Japanese Toku series. Kinda. I've seen every Godzilla movie but I'm new to watching Sentai rather than Power Rangers. I grew up with Power Rangers and stopped watching after Dino Thunder. Recently I watched Akibarangers S1 so I figured I'd try out Kyoryuger. Anyways basically I just wanted to know what the main differences are between Power Rangers and Super Sentai and I'd like to know the same for Kamen Rider too. Thanks in advance.

Sentai and Power Rangers are completely different shows. They use the same footage, but the story that goes around it are usually different.

Kamen Rider is it's own beast, having little in common with Sentai beyond both being henshin hero shows.

From what I've seen Sentai doesn't seem anywhere as mindlessly repetitive as Power Rangers. Could you recommend a good recent Kamen Rider title for me to start at?

That depends on the series. Just because it's Sentai doesn't automatically make it better.

Anyway, a good recent Kamen Rider series would be OOO or W. They're both really good series to dive into for a beginner.

Like Matrix said, it depends. Also depends on your personal preferences. I happen to think Goseiger is better than Megaforce, Mystic Force is better than Magiranger. But there's also ones we all agree on. Boukenger is better than Operation Overdrive, Shinkenger is better than Samurai. If you're looking for a good series to jump into I'd go for Gekiranger, what Jungle Force was based off of, or Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger. The new season of Sentai. With Kamen Rider. OOO is an excellent start series, so is Fourze. I'd avoid Hibiki though at first. It's not a normal kamen rider series. And I'd avoid Decade because there is no ending.

Welcome to Toku! Kamen Rider, Super Sentai and Power Rangers are all very different in feel and scope. You could pretty much pick any Super Sentai to start with, or maybe follow my method and listen to their opening songs and see which you like best. :D

Many will disagree but I think Gokaiger makes a good primer for Super Sentai. Kyoryuger is also pretty good since we're following it now, and it's fun to watch it together.

For Kamen Rider, my best recommendation is Kamen Rider W. A great show with a good mix of fun, humor and drama and really opens your eyes to what Kamen Rider is like (at least the post-Decade ones). Fourze is also a great series, my personal favorite, and I hear great things about OOO too.

I'd watch OOO, Comic. It's excellent.

I started Kyoryuger a few hours ago, it's pretty fun to watch and I'm a Dino fan boy so it adds to my enjoyment. Also, their suits are probably one of my favorites already.

I would, but I keep debating whether to watch it now or wait until it's part of the Let's Watch Wednesdays.

So yeah, good beginning shows. For Sentai if you want to go for something besides the current show I'd recommend Gokaiger. It's a really fun show with a good cast, some great action, and a lot of moments that will make anyone who grew up watching Power Rangers geek out hardcore.

For Rider I'd agree that W and OOO are good primers for the modern series - you may even want to try Wizard, the currently airing show. I also always recommend going back about a decade and trying Kuuga and Agito, the first two shows of the series after its revival in 2000. They're a lot darker and more dramatic than the current shows, but they both have really great and engaging stories that don't get too bogged down by having to market collectable toy gimmicks like the modern Rider shows.

Is Tsuruhime even a schoolgirl? I know her actress was 13 at the time, but I don't think her character was ever seen in a school.

Watch OOO or W, those are both good current day Rider series.

As far as a good starting Sentai goes, it all depends on your personal preference. You could always start with the Sentai that got turned into your favorite season of Power Rangers, or just pick one at random. I'd suggest visiting Sentai Tim's Youtube channel. He has quite a bit of full subbed Sentais up. As far as a personal preference goes, I'd suggest Gokaiger. It's a great way to learn about the different Sentais, and as a PR fan, you will mark out big time.

Kamen Rider wise, yeah I can't help you there.

As for Sentai, I would recommend whatever you'd find interesting. We currently are doing a "Let's Watch Wednesday" of Gekiranger, so you can check that out :thumb:. It was the last Sentai series I saw before I moved out of Japan, so I recommend it :)

I just downloaded the entirety of Kamen Rider W, so I'll watch that when I have time. And Gekiranger has a really nice costume design and one of the biggest casts for Sentai. I actually watched the finale of Jungle Fury for the hell of it a while back. I'm pretty psyched for Akibaranger S2, although I hope they don't continue breaking the 4th wall so excessively as in last season's final episodes. That was kinda a bit much for S1. Kyoryuger is definitely something I'll be keeping up with as well.

Oh, feel free to watch Gekiranger. It's my personal favorite Sentai, it's truly great! It does a lot of things different from other series, and it does them well.

I dug into some other brands of Toku too however, while I really enjoyed some of their costume designs I found that they were a little lower in quality. I could be wrong but most of them are just not what I'm lookin for.

Edit: By quality I meant their budget doesn't seem as big and they end up campier than I can handle.
