The problem with Philip
 

I watched the first episode of W recently (I'm a bit new to Kamen Rider. Seen: Dragon Knight, Black, Original) and I had a hard time with Philip. Any one else? Ankh was very cool in Den-o All Riders, and I thought I wouldn't like him. Does Philip "get better"?

Huh, did you really not like him in the beginning? I was in love with his derpiness from the very first episode. He cracked me up! I've only seen up to episode 10 in W and I had already loved him when I stopped.

Philip is a fun character.
As for "Getting better", the only major change in his character occurs around the end (Which is spoiler filled, so I won't disclose anything).
There are minor changes over the course of the series, though.

There are no problems with Philip.

Philip is great.

Philip is important.

Sure he is no Shotaro, but no one is hard boiled like Shotaro.

When I first started Double, I saw Shotaro as the Kamen Rider, with Philip as a sidekick needed only to complete the henshin. I didn't get all that fuss about calling them both Kamen Riders.

The show converted me, and by the end of the series, Philip was to me, every bit the Kamen Rider that Shotaro is. So yes, he gets A LOT better.

Trust me, you'll grow to love Phillip. The only thing that ever really bothered me about him is why he dresses like a girl, that was never explained.

seriously though, Phillip does grow as a character and, initial impressions aside, becomes just as endearing as everyone else in the cast.

I'm sure he looks better in a dress than I would......

I just don't get the dress.... apparel. I mean, is his look ever explained? Do I need to pretend he's my son and just accept him for who he is, and only then will I see how awesome he is?

Any way I'm starting with Kuuga and moving on forward, so I look forward to W.

I would say consider this. W has two main protagonists.

The entire Kamen Rider Double series is centered around a 'bro' theme.
Just wait for the character development. Hopefully you won't be disappointed.

Philip is one of those characters that grows on you over time. Yes, at first, when you wonder what is so important about him, you realize he is a great foil for Shotaro, and an excellent compliment to his character.

Yeah, Phillip has the most character growth in the show, only rivaled by Terui's character growth. I'll say this, if Phillip hasn't made you cry a few manly tears by the end of the episodes, you have no heart :lol.

Its not a dress. Its just...flamboyant Japanese fashion. Crazy-weird stuff you'd see on a Harajuku street show.

It's only awkward when you see that Toei sells the wardrobes for the two main guys, where Shotaro's look is modeled by a guy, and Philip's is modeled by a girl. Yup.
