Garo Yami wo Terasu Mono 01 "Ryuga" Discussion
The raw for episode 1 of the new Garo is up on Nyaa now, so let's get this discussion started. Since Garo doesn't have it's own section (It should, it really, REALLY should), I guess the other section will have to do.
Anyways, we have a raw that will have to do until subs are out, a new happy go lucky Garo, and a ring telling us to keep the lights on while watching. Discuss away! |
My very thought is "I should turn my lights off." What? I'm not gonna let a ring tell me what to do! The lights go off. Otherwise, shadows lurk and fear reigns. I don't want that interrupting my show. :p
Seriously though, you can tell right off the bat that they are trying to go for something different as the show no longer has the infamous opening narration. This kind of made me sad, but I'll get over it. Speaking of different, there seems to be a Western theme going on here. The music is something more akined to Trigun than Garo's use to. The commercial bumper is a Garo branding iron (which is awesome!). Plus, the Makai Priest in the outro (the female lead we haven't seen yet) is meshing with a gun and bullets. Oh, and there's a Japanese cowboy driving a station wagon. That made me laugh. :lol So yeah, I like this theme. I'm guessing Ryuga is a "cowboy" Makai Knight. Doing things his own way, wondering from town to town with a mission (and like a hobo). Crying at the sound of statues...what the hell was that? Seriously though, Ryuga looks to be like a very different kind of character than Kouga. He's showing way more emotion and that's okay. Plotwise, I can get the gist of it from the translated trailer and what's on screen. Besically, they set up a plot where Ryuga doesn't want to work with the other Makais to save the city and there's a plot dealing with the miltary. This should be a lot more clear once subs are up. Oh, and Zaruba can't talk. The action is the great stuff Garo is known for. Good wire work, good CG work, good everything. The use of the armor was over the top in that way only Garo does. |
I'm glad someone did this, because if they didn't I was going to :D

And I get Den-O's arguments against a Garo forum, but at the same time it's the only one of the four currently airing series not to have its own discussion board and this year we've got a lot of new Garo - new 24 episode series plus two new movies. The fanbase may be smaller, but I think giving it a spotlight would help bring in more fans. |

We know that it's a currently running series as well. But with it not being an annual year long thing it's hard to garner as wide a fan base. The 3 big ones have a new show or season every year, consecutively. There's always something new to cover and discuss. Unfortunately the time between Garo projects means a lot of dead time in a sub forum that's dedicated to it :( |

I wasn't saying there should be like a permanent Garo forum alongside the Sentai and Rider ones, I was thinking more like the Megaforce/Wizard/Kyoryuger/Akibaranger current series forums - something for the show while it's running that would get folded back into the Other Toku forum once it's over (or maybe after both movies are subbed). I don't think we need like a permanent Garo subforum, no. |
Even then that's just not feasible. Yes we could make a section for current Garo and roll it off when it's done. But all that section would boil down to is the episode discussions. Just look at this "Other Toku" section as the example. This is the spot where Garo stuff should and has been posted previously. Over the entire time this site has existed, over a year now, only 3 threads pertaining to Garo have been posted in this section.
It's just evident that if we put the time and work into giving Garo even a currently airing subsection that it wouldn't be used fully. There just hasn't been enough evidence to support that it would carry itself. We're always open to more and improved open discussion for toku. Sections for Garo, Ultras, and Godzilla are a goal down the road. We want this site to be the #1 place for all things tokusatsu related. But there has to be a necessity for these sections to exist first. Right now there just isn't enough discussion, interaction, and demand to get those off the ground. |

Also, I was just checking O-T's site to see if Garo was up yet (for at least the third time since this morning) and got some bad news. Because they're going to be using a later airing for higher quality raws, it means we won't get episode one subbed until next weekend. :( |
Went ahead and watched the raw because I am not waiting another week for new Garo. Obviously I'll need to come back and watch it again with subs (possibly twice if TVN gets theirs done first), but so far I agree with most of what Blade Raider said.
There is definitely a Western vibe to this show, in terms of visuals, music, and characters (and not just the cute cowgirl Makai Priest in the ending credits). Ryuga has a definite "drifter" vibe to him that reminds me a bit of some of Clint Eastwood's films, especially A Fistful of Dollars. He's a lot more emotive than either Eastwood or Kouga, though, and he's shaping up to be an intriguing protagonist. Hard to get a strong sense of the others so far, but their basic personalities come off pretty clearly in just their first scenes. Vol City has me intrigued. It's hard to tell how widespread their military police are without subs - I assume it's just a local thing, though. They are pretty badass, though, and I'm eager to see what their deal is. The biggest thing I noticed was the sign outside of town. It's full of engrish, but it mentions both futuristic technology and being built on top of ancient ruins. I'm thinking we're looking at a Poltergeist situation here with that, although the question is whether the city was put over the ruins for nefarious purposes or just out of sheer dumb luck. In any case, Ryuga totally ruined that groom's honeymoon. :lol Also, the guy in the car? Totally Tachibana Tobei's son. They should've had him be driving a yellow jeep. :p |

By basic personalities, do you mean "Not Jetman Gai" and "Not Quincy"? :p Quote:
PS Meanwhile, while wating for subs, I'm getting back to rewatching the original series. |

And, not to be outdone, O-T has put up a script and a raw for anyone who doesn't want to wait for their full HD version. :thumb:

Well I just watched it and it was pretty lackluster. I'll say that if it wasn't for Burai showing up, I would have completely hated the episode. Forget Ryuuga, I want to know about Burai and what he does as he was far more interesting in the 2 minutes we saw him compared to Ryuuga's 21 minutes.
Also, Are we sure the show was translated correctly? I mean the title. I ask because I swear they should have called it Garo The Demon Who Holds The Shaky Camera. Oh, and both the actors to Burai and the Stargate-1 girl look familiar. Lastly, the opening song is probably the weakest, worst opening out of all three seasons. There was no energy, no originality, it was just bland boring music. |

Rewatched with subs. Still great. There's a lot here to work with. The Horror left an interesting clue and we got at least two other plots. I look forward to seeing it unfold. Evevything else is pretty much what I said about the raw. |

EDIT: Nevermind, that was answered to be wrong. Wow, I was going to say that guy got old and fat fast. |
oops wrong thread

Never saw a Garo series before, first one.Just saw the subbed version and gotta say I love it! Great story behind it.Definetly like Ryuga's character and him wanting to be a loner.
|
I enjoyed the episode, but I really needed to force myself about the other knights not being a Quincy and a fancy pirate. I didn't memorize the name of the one with the glasses, but it doesn't matter, from now on he's Ishida.
Compared to the first episode of the first season, it's very centered on the main character, we're supposed to already know what's an horror, a priest, a Makai knight... so it doesn't bother with a lot of exposition except intoducing the main cast. |
Having eagerly waiting for the Overtime sub I've only just had a chance to watch it. And I was not disappointing, once again Garo proves to be possibly the best damn toku series out there.
First episode showed so much promise and set up a whole load of mystery. I'm really liking Ryuga too, he has the same air of badassery Kouga did but is far less stoic. I loved the little bits like him sitting down when the Horror was spouting Makai and him eating the food during the fight sequence. Bandai, PLEASE make more Figuarts for this show. I don't want the Makai Kadou figures :( |

Having seen Garo from the first season to half of Makai Senki, I'm a little disappointed by the presentation of episode 1. Compared to the past seasons, the fight choreography between Ryuga and SG1 is a bit sloppy. Also, the Garo armor only shows up for around 10 seconds, as the Horror isn't a worthy opponent.
Still, I'll be following this series, hoping things start to pick up. |
This was my first introduction to the Garo series and wow it was amazing. I loved the action, the special effects and the characters, I'm definitely keeping up with this show.
