Most Serious Sentai
 

Hey, CivilShark here. Just wondering which Sentai season takes itself the most serious? I've only been watching the current season and Akibaranger so I really have no clue what a less light-hearted Sentai series is like. While we're at it might as well discuss which Power Ranger series is the most and least serious as well.

Out of the shows I've seen, I'd definitely say Liveman is the most serious followed by Jetman. Out of more recent series it's probably been Go-Busters, but that had a fair amount of comic relief padding it out too.

Power Ranger-wise? In Space, Lost Galaxy and RPM are probably my picks.

What of Dairanger? I'm gonna check it out anyways because it has some of the coolest suits til this day, but what kind of tone does it have? And comic relief is just fine, W takes itself seriously but also has a great sense of humor. It's been awhile but I recall Dino Thunder being pretty heavy with it's atmosphere at times. The setting for RPM is kinda dark in general.

Yeah Dairanger is a reasonably serious one too. To be honest most shows from the late 80s/early 90s period are for the most part serious ones.

Does that apply to Carranger? I read somewhere that one was somewhat of a parody. It doesn't seem to be on the same level as Akibaranger however.

Edit- Nevermind, just watched the first episode. Definitely silly.

I haven't seen many Sentai, but of those I've seen, I'll give it to Dairanger as the most serious (Odd that it's immediately followed by Kakuranger, which is probably one of the most silly series).

For Power Rangers, I think I'll give it to either In Space, Time Force, or RPM.

Time Force had a dude who pulled a bone out his body for a sword (with horrible disfigurement) and the first Red dies in the first episode. Pretty "gritty" for Power Rangers I'd say.

I'm have to go RPM for one of the most serious Power Rangers.

Now I haven't watched any series full through of Super Sentai but the ones I think right now are Battle Fever J (Okay it has sillyness that takes away from the seriousness but it has some dark scenes in it), and Liveman. Liveman in just one episode is pretty grim.

I don't watch enough of either to say, but for Super Sentai the most recent one has to be Gobusters. Shinkenger is also pretty serious, I'd say.

Power Rangers, it would definitely be RPM, but also Time Force.

Depends on your definition of serious. Jet, Zyu, Dai, Oh, Mega, GoGoV, Ginga, Time, Geki, and Gokai are serious. Aba and Kaku are serious with comedy mixed in.

I think Carranger is the most serious... ly silly. :p

Ohranger, from what I've heard.

Because so many people hated the serious tone, they amped up the ridiculousness with Carranger.

Has anyone subbed Ohranger?

About as much as any Super Sentai pre-Gao. IE: not all of it.

It's odd you can find completely subbed versions of say, Jetman but there are iterations that have come out after that (about a decades worth) that have either never been subbed or only bits and pieces.

That generally stems from a lack of available raws to work with. Especially after the big Megaupload shutdown, a lot of precious raws were hosted there that haven't been found again. Some shows have excellent raw sources but others like say Battle Fever J, do not :(

Are there no ways of getting a hold of new copies then?

Lack of time and interest too, given that most groups focus on the recent stuff.

The biggest problem is that alot of raws for older shows have to come from blu-ray and DVD rips. You may not know it but Japanese home video releaess like that are crazy expensive. Full series boxed sets can cost upwards of $400 on blu-ray. A sub group would first have to find someone who could either buy it in Japan for them or find somewhere online to buy them. Then actually pay those prices just to sub them for free. Unfortunately it isn't entirely cost effective in most cases :(
True. But some of the more specialized groups that are still going have a passion for classic toku. Like GUIS and Harorangers.

That and Ohranger had some good toy sales apparently so they wanted a show to make kids buy more toys. I'd say Carranger would be pretty good at that.

Wow and I thought boxset prices were crazy in my country! (that makes me sound like I'm from the third world or something, haha).

How come DVDs are so expensive in Japan?

Except the 61.52% of 90's Sentai has been subbed. It's quickly catching up with the 2000's 75.95% completion of subbed episodes. Yes, I did the math. :p

People in Japan don't tend to buy DVD's of sentai very often. So when they are released they're usually pretty limited. Which means less people get them, it's like a cycle that feeds on itself unfortunately. Check out Mandarake some time and see the crazy prices sentai DVD's go for. Here's a great example. Shinkenger DVD set for 60,000 yen! That's $627!

And that is a recent iteration as well, so I'm guessing those missing ones from the 90s and early 00s are probably going at....well those prices are already insane, so I don't know, deranged prices? Haha.

At least I can understand why so much is missing now.

It doesn't really help that Japan's DVD Prices were insane to begin with...

Serious Sentai? Tensou Sentai Goseier! I kid, I kid. Wasn't JAKQ supossed to be a serious toned series?

Gokaiger had some pretty serious moments, though I'm not exactly sure what you deem as "serious."

Yeah JAKQ was, and then they added Big One to lighten the tone of it.

I think the most serious Super Sentai is Dairanger. Because they're so serious that the characters are portrayed as too weak to even beat the villains(yes, I still haven't gotten over it).

I don't know guys. Jetman was pretty serious.

It could be called serious in that it has a higher age demographic and functions more like other tv shows with it's seasons.

Yeah Jetman is really serious but if you're looking for a GOOD Serious Sentai, then I warn you that Jetman is pretty overrated.

It isn't bad but I had it introduced to me as both the most serious and the best Sentai had to offer and...eh...

I've seen it and while I wouldn't call it the best, or even one of the best, it is one of the better Showa series.

I don't really know much about the behind the camera stuff when it comes to Sentai, so I don't have a lot to compare Jetman too. I only learnt like four or five years ago that Power Rangers was an adaptation of Sentai in the first place.

The only Sentai I've flat out ENJOYED is Shinkenger because it's so very Japanese it just didn't work when PRs whitewashed it. Also Shinkenger is a serious Sentai (for the most part) and one I highly recommend.

I second this motion tenfold.

(Would that come out to me recommending Samurai Sentai Shinkenger 10 times or 20?)

Gekiranger is serious!
...Ignoring the jungle boy main character, the incredibly odd plots Ran gets involved in, everything about Ken, Mele when she's fawning over Rio, and the Christmas episode.

All this talk of Shinkenger is making me sick. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who was bored to death by that show :lol
