What did you think of Power Rangers SPD?
Just finished the series today - not as bad as I was expecting, but at the same time not fantastic.
I thought the cast were great, but there were a lot of things I felt in there that just didn't work, particularly Grumm/the Troobian Empire. Oh, and the Omega Ranger sucked. EDIT: Added poll - partly because I'm interested and partly because I'm playing around with site features :p |
SPD was a fantastic series, it and Dinothunder are why i like what disney did with power rangers in ways
|
As a massive Dekaranger fan I cannot give an unbiased opinion on SPD.
Some of the stuff worked great (Sky's story, Boom, Kruger & Kat) and other stuff was lackluster (Mora, Grum & Omega). |
I really enjoyed the cast. I thought they did a bang-up job with what they had to work with.
I really enjoyed the beginning of the series - it looked promising, being JUST different enough from Dekaranger to have some real potential. Loved the idea of "A-Squad" gone missing, as you know they'd be back later in the series. Really disliked the sudden "SUPER BAD GUY" in the "Magnificence" at the very end of the season, and I thought Jack's story-arch should have been played out more through the series instead of just having issues with Sky at the beginning (and being reluctant to become a Ranger) to meeting some chick and then wanting out of being a Ranger. Thought the character that had the best storyline and growth was Sky. From "ME NOT RED RANGER? ME SMASH!" attitude to becoming friends with everyone, conquering the monster that killed his father, and eventually becoming the Red Ranger at the very end. |
I got through about half of it a couple of months ago. It wasn't too terrible, and really outdid my expectations, at least. The choreography was kinda bad from what I remember, but the casting was nice, and I did like what I saw.

It's easliy one of my of the better Ranger series in the last 10 years. After the way Disney screwed the whole franchise mid-Wild Force I'm surprised we got something as solid as SPD
|
It was cool, just wasn't a fan of Jack & Sam :/

SPD was a mixed bag for me, but luckily the pros do outweigh the cons by a bit.
The core cast of 5 was pretty good for me, as they were all interesting in their own way and were rather believable. Bridge is one of my favorite Green Rangers, Z was interesting, Jack was a fun take on what it means to be a streetwise Red, and even Syd, who I found the least interesting, had great moments. I agree with Kickback that Sky had great character development, and it can possibly be argued that he was the main character of the series, not Jack. Doggie Kruger, Kat and Boom were all great additions with fantastic personality, and I thought Mora was terrific as a child. The aliens were a great touch and some of the designs were rather interesting. Finally, I found the soundtrack to be amazing, fist-pumping stuff. What I didn't like was that the Troobian empire was really poorly fleshed out. What was a Troobian, exactly? Most of the monsters were hired help using Broodwing's machines. The big bad behind the Troobian empire came out of nowhere, and while the series did finish nicely, the last boss was a bit confusing. The second big beef I had was the Omega Ranger. He was simply wasted potential and not very interesting. For me I always found Kruger to be more of a sixth Ranger than the Omega Ranger. There were also a few pacing problems but nothing too major in my book. So all in all, it's a good, fun series. Not perfect, but it seemed that they showed effort, at least in its conception, if not in its completion. |
I voted "Pretty Good" since it had a strong start, with a weak (but not awful) second half. Characters were great, especially the main five and Kruger, and Boom was awesome as well. Not to mention the addition of A-Squad, which was pretty cool.

I watched SPD on Netflix a couple of months ago and had a blast the whole way through.
The cast was great. I loved hanging out with those guys. |
I remember catching this on TV.
It was a pretty nice series, and the characters were all fun to follow. I voted pretty good, because while I can't think of any overwhelming faults, there's this feeling of something lacking. |

Dekaranger is one of my all-time favorite Super Sentai shows. Because of this, I simply hated Power Rangers S.P.D. because Buena Vista dumbed down a lot of elements that made Dekaranger epic. But after seeing the horror of Power Rangers Samurai, I'm willing to give S.P.D. another chance - if someone fansubs the Japanese dub.

Revisiting this discussion...
S.P.D. was such a drastic change from both Ninja Storm and Dino Thunder. Ninja Storm was a knee-slap type of humor between the characters and the villain. Dino Thunder really focused on the differences between the Rangers, in a humorous way, and S.P.D. came along and it was no longer "NINJA SCHOOL AWESOME!" or "ZOMG HIGH SCHOOL SUX0Rz!" ... it was a INTERGALATIC POLICE DEPARTMENT that was using Power Ranger technology for their "super troopers" so to speak. And the Red Ranger is a criminal? That's pretty hardcore from what we just spent 2 years watching. But for all the "ZOMG COOL!" that the series gave us through the first handful of episodes, by the time the Omega Ranger shows up with that HORRIBLE voice actor and is a ball of light, I just lost absolutely all interest. I caught the finale - good music and good stuff with Doggie and Grumm. But I don't miss SPD ... and Bridge is nowhere as awesome as Ziggy ;) |
Has anyone here seen the Japanese dub of this series?

WOW! first time I've ever seen dubbed PR. I always heard that Lost Galaxy did great over there. Me personally I think SPD had the best cast since Season 1. But yeah The ending was a bit outta the blue and forgettable. What was really sad was a good portion of the cast appeared at a Con a few days before the finale declaring it was the best PR season finale ever.... Yeah that didn't happen. As for Omega Ranger..... Yeah the guy playing him couldn't ADR for crap, but I think the concept was interesting and I like how the games later on used him to bassiclly serve as the American equivalant to Aka Red. |
I liked it cause they had some nice zords, the shadow kicked ass, and the finale was pretty cool too
|
Excellent season, it really was. -wiggles fingers- Buttery!
|
I liked spd a lot. Im not saying it was the best but it was very good for a pr.
