Which PR season would you change and why?
 

Power Rangers has been around nearly 20 years now and not every season has been popular - in fact, some seasons have been downright despised by a majority (at least vocal majority) of the Power Rangers fanbase over the years.

- Turbo
- Lightspeed Rescue
- Wildforce
- Mystic Force
- Operation Overdrive
- Jungle Fury

My question is this - if you could change one season of Power Rangers, any season at all, which would you change, why would you change it, and what would you change about it?

Power Rangers Turbo
The way the season was currently set up, Lord Zedd and Rita Repulsa looked to be heading back in to the action as the main villains. Suddenly, Divatox randomly appears to release an all powerful monster that she plans to marry and take over the world. The Power Rangers then get "Turbo powers" (randomly) and a new Blue Ranger (Justin the kid) and go save the day.

Why change it?

For starters, it abandoned everything about Power Rangers (MMPR and Zeo) that was good - character based plotlines and villains that were interesting. Instead, we got an entire cast of villains that tried to be comedy relief, Power Rangers (for the first half) that didn't need characterization because they'd been there in some cases for 3 to 4 seasons, and having a kid Ranger just really stunk the idea up.

What would I change?

For starters the villains - instead of Lord Zedd and Rita just disappearing, have them accidently uncover a new villain that takes over, and have the entire season be them being lackies to a new big bad, while trying to plot an insurrection.

I still think the team needs to be replaced - but instead of just having some new mentor appear and take them away, have Billy return as the mentor and have Zordon take the other Rangers, as Zeo Rangers, to Eltar to fight off an invasion from an unnamed villain (perfect In Space set-up). Billy could then become the Phantom Ranger (as Judd Lynn said he'd like to do) to help the new team.

Eventually the big bad wins (like in the original Turbo) but as he's about to claim ultimate victory, Dark Spectre summons all of them away. Billy mentions that a distress signal came from Eltar ... Zordon and the Zeo Rangers were over-powered and Zordon is captured, while the Zeo Rangers were teleported back to Earth by Zordon but have no memory of their lives as Power Rangers.

The new team would decide they need to go to Eltar and save Zordon. Billy and the Blue Ranger (some new character) would decide to stay behind to track down Tommy and the others to try and bring back their memories and thus their powers. The only two that would actually be saved would be Adam and Tommy, for obvious continuity reasons.

In Space can then happen as is.

Thoughts? Your own suggestions?

Me, I'd change Ninja Storm to try and be less "bro-like" with the dialogue. Hearing "dude" so gratuitously used makes me ashamed to watch that show.

Back when I got back into the show when Dino Thunder was starting I always saw Lightspeed Rescue listed with Turbo and Wild Force as the worst Ranger shows. Personally, I'm not a big fan - it has its moments, but the acting is some of the worst in the franchise (especially Vypra - I have no idea how she got the job, but it was probably on her back). Probably the best "base raid" finale next to Turbo, though.

Personally, I would actually change RPM. Largely to make it end in line with the original plans instead of being a rehashing of Andross and Astronema. The Ranger Black ending was really dark, but it would have been one of the most jaw-dropping and memorable moments in Power Rangers history.

Yeah, the shortcomings of the season are incredibly blatant, but sometimes, you just have to let the inner Carter fangirl speak out.

I agree, Carter is probably one of the best red rangers EVER, loved me some lightspeed rescue, while i've never seen its sentai counterpart Ckyuu Ckyuu Sentai GogoV, the themesong for GogoV is amazing

And I agree with you both about Carter. He was and is the best PR red. The thing that bugs me about the PR Train is that in it's formation they remove the ding ding sounds. Like you would hear at a train crossing. Those were there in GoGoV, and they would have been perfectly fine in the PR. I am not sure why they removed it.

I am not really sure I would edit or change any PR. There are only a few PR series I enjoy. LightSpeed, lost galaxy, and time force. And to me, they were fine as is.

Lightspeed rescue was really good, which came as a pleasant surprise to me when I watched it recently.

First of all I'd change the Samurai origin into this (previously posted in the Samurai Yay or Nay thread) so the whole concept of Western samurais isn't so ridiculous.

Other than that I'd also change Turbo so that it connects better to Zeo. Maybe have a few different groups of villains battling the rangers (Rita and Zedd, Machine Empire and Divatox) and there be a power struggle for the conquest of Earth until Dark Spectre rallies everyone.

I'd also change Ninja Storm by getting rid of all traces of Lothor, because he really brings that show down.

Season 2 with Dairanger suits
- Five new freshmen to Angel Grove High are chosen and mentored by the de-powered original 6 Power Rangers fighting new bad guys

Season 3 with Alien Rangers idea
- Teenaged alien ninjas mentored by Ninjaman arrives on earth to seal evil alien demons while adjusting to life on Earth

Zeo
- Five young archeologists fight the Machine Empire using the excavated Zeo powers

Turbo
- Five shop class students befriend an alien mechanic(Dappu from Carranger) ET style fighting Alien Biker Gangs while trying to finish building their dream car

Space
- A school for prodigies are raided by bad guys, the four surviving students escape on a space shuttle and is rescued by the Red Ranger who recruits them as Power Rangers

On the subject of the first post, after Linkara's History of the Power Rangers on Lightspeed Rescue, I decided to check it out on Netflix.
How could anyone hate that series? The villains were a bit bland, but aside from the Scottish robot and his sidekick, I found them just as, if not more, interesting than the Zeo villains...
Also, Wild Force was awesome.

Anyway, I'd change Jungle Fury. While I'm not a purist who gets butthurt over every mild change from Sentai to PR, I really thought the martial arts based story worked. The Rangers practiced it in JF, but it didn't feel like the driving force (Granted: I'm biased because I didn't finish it)/

Okay. Prepare for some hate, but I promise, I am going somewhere good with this. Ahem.

Ninja Storm. Aside from Zurgann there is NOTHING redeemable about this season. You turned Sensei into a Guinea Pig, Robo-Cam, Lother's Neice's were just Annoying, and the whole story seemed to go around in circles. And make little sense.

It just needs minor tweaks though. Like with WF have Sensei kidnapped by Lothor at the start of the season. Leaving Cam to become a Mentor to the Wind Rangers, opens up a whole story of him needing to believe in himself. Which leads to the Samurai Morpher. Which he can still get in the same way. Destroy the Neices. They were annoying, and the worst part of an abomination of a season. Do away with the Semi-truck to, and the one in Dino-Thunder. Just saying.
That's all though. The acting was good in this season, honestly. The only thing that felt forced was each of them being into some sort of extreme sport (Surfing, Skateboarding, Moto-X). Wouldn't take much to make this a good season.

Power Rangers Samurai
The series is a franchise "reboot" after Saban Brands reclaimed the rights to Power Rangers from Disney.

Why Change It?
Power Rangers Samurai is one of the rare examples of a faithful adaptation to the source material being the wrong solution. In the past, this practice worked in Time Force and Wild Force, but the main problem is that Samurai Sentai Shinkenger is culturally impossible to directly port over into a western environment. The premise of a Samurai lord and his vassals works in a Japanese show, but with Americans, it doesn't make sense. In addition, character traits in Shinkenger were very crucial to many storylines. For example, Ryunosuke's background as a kabuki actor was invaluable in foiling Dayuu's bride-kidnapping scheme. Kevin's background as an Olympic swimmer has nothing to do with the series; as a result, the PR Samurai version of the bride-kidnapping episode lost its punchline.

Oh yeah, did I mention that these people can't act their way out of a paper bag?

What Would I Change?
The first thing I'd change would be the most obvious: the actors. Get people who can actually act instead of just standing there and reading the cue cards, hoping no one would notice.

Second, just make a completely different story. Instead of them having their powers handed down from past generations (which doesn't make sense, given that they're not Japanese), just have them stumble into a cave and find ancient relics that give them their powers. That always works, doesn't it?

And lastly, drop Bulk. Sure, he was added to the series for nostalgia's sake, but he's nothing but episode filler, and Spike is no Skull.

I agree with everything that Area said except the Bulk part.
Honestly, his bits are the only reason I watch Samurai anymore.

Power Ranger Dino Thunder

This is an old school one, it's the only season I've ever said "I can do better" because when abaranger was early in it's run I saw an american adaptation laid out clear as day. and posted it to RB LONG before it ever aired. some of my idea matched up with thiers some didn't.

What would I change?

First off Jason would have been the returning Black ranger rather than Tommy, this would have allowed the character Emily "easily recast" to have played the same role Asukas wife did in Abaranger, pretty much the only thing that I would have borrowed from the sentai. this would have allowed some pretty extreme motivation for Jason.

The three kids would have been pretty much exactly the same except for a scene about a third in where they break one of Zordons 3 rules (which Jason tried to immpress on them) being to not use thier powers unless a monster attack, right after a megazord battle they try to stop a purse statcher (Or some other random petty crime) and end up putting the guy in the hospital due to how strong the suits make them by default. this would have lead to a story arc involving a fair bit of continuity with the larger universe. threads aside, Tommy would have returned as the white Ranger, not evil....but under some false assumptions which eventually would lead to him joining the team, but it also would have resulted in those ASJ and JDF getting to play themselves on camera with the rivalry we've heard about.

Third change, thier command center, the intro to the series would have found Jason VERY suddenly having powers and in the mentor role, no prep time, no fancy multi-million dollar command center, this would have been his basement with all the Radio shack gear they could fit on his credit card, would be VERY lo-tech.

The Villian. Mezagog is out. The villian I picture was a totally diffrent Ballgame, Zordons son, whom has set up shop in Zedds old castle. The Dino Thunder powers were Zordons great back up plan. in case this kid ever came back. and this kid is Horrifying., He is insane in the truest sense of the word. switching from an almost childish nature to straight up evil in the blink of an eye, his deranged mental state also accounting for the haphazard nature of the monsters.

the series also would have explored the nature of "delving deeper" into thier powers, something which was in the final cut. given the fact I posted a very large story treatment at a point that would have been very early in DT production I like to delude myself into think that idea did come from me.

It's not all that bad. Honestly it's been one of the best seasons we've had in years.

That's arguable. The only Disney seasons I think that are worse than Samurai are Ninja Storm and Operation Overdrive.

Oh Compared to freaking Ninja Storm this season is Shakespear.

I don't know why anyone has offered to abort Samurai. My first choice would be operation overdrive minus the once a ranger story arc. My second choice would be parts of samurai, like Jaden's hair, kevin, emily (prity much everthing ecept for miike, deker and mentor. AND THE PUNS HAVE TO GO)

Mentor has to go in Samurai.
