G-12 Made me Think
Didn't know what catagory to put this under, so bear with me here.
The new combined forms of the mech/zords seem to be getting more elaborate. I say elaborate but what I mean is: It's like they take all the mech/zords in the series, draw little pictures of them on darts, throw them at a board and see what happened. Bingo you have an Explosion. Does anyone else miss the old way? (I'm going to use the amwerican terms now because I don't know all the Japanese ones, so please again: Bear with me) The original Ultrazord was sleek and clean, for example. So was the Thunder Ultra, Ninja and Shogan Ultra, Zeo and even Turbo. But lately they've been getting overly-complicated. I think Baltmatrix put it best when he called them a cluster-you-know-what. Because thats what they became. Even the new one in Shinkenger looks close to the line of silly. (What about Gosei? Gosei is perfect, shut up) Gokai had a simple ultra combination. Somehow making a Dinosaur/Pirate/Indy Car combination work. And I was serious up there. Gosei, somehow, made a multi-headed monster work. In the show. I'll admit the toy looks far less epic, but thats the way of the world. I just wish they'd go back to the cleaner designs. Go-Buster looks alright, so far. But we'll see. |
I'm gonna put it out there and say I hate the Thunder and Zeo Ultrazords. I'd rather have a big pile of robots where every component is visibly clear than "mecha hides in the giant carrier hides out of sight".

Engine Oh G-12 is actually one of my favorite mechas. And right now, I actually don't remember the old ultrazords. I'll go look those up now and make edits to this post later.
Nope, don't like the early ultras. G-12 has them beat. The Shinkenger one was more clustery, but still cool. |

I was actually hoping something like that would happen in Gokaiger, because a massive cluster consisting of Gokai-Oh, Magidragon, Pat Striker, Gao Lion, Furaimaru, Machalcon, and GoJyuJin, would've been absolutely bonkers.(maybe even Variblune too) In general my opinions of everything tend to converge to being positive. If I don't like something at first, I keep at it and it eventually grows on me. Goseiger sort of did that. It's not my favorite series, but I don't hate on it some of the others. It's a great show. |

I understand where you're coming from. I do. And I like the rest of the Go-Onger mechs. Especailly Valvemax (Whatever the Japanese name is). Just not sure about the cluster-type ultra deal. And I know what you mean about Gokai. But honestly they did alright with it. I mean, who else could've combied a Dinosaur/Indy Car/and Galleon into a mech that looked decent? |

G-12 is coherent! Well aside from the random kibble bits on the sides of the legs, but otherwise I think it's pretty damn slick. G-12 got me back into rangers, then into sentai then into kamen rider. So I wouldn't be on this site if it wasn't for G-12 =] And Gosei hyper is a bit of a cluster, Grand Gosei great is magnificent though! Such an epic combo.

This ^. grand gosie is still one of my fav combinations. As for G12, i loved go-onger from start to finsh so i loved the whole engine idea. when you think about it its staggering that 12 huge vecihals can combine into basically an Engine Super God. (If you look at it that way.)
In the same respect I liked the ninja and shogun ultrazord (although titanus was a bit much) but I still prefer cluster (you know whats). I just love seeing every part being used somewhere. I guess that's why i didn't really like the final gokiger mech. Maybe if someone took a part from every goki machine and attached them to every limb (for instance magi dragon wing on goki blue's, shinken blue leg on goki green,(im not even going to being to try and spell his name) minizord from hurricanger on goki yellow's and patstrker on pink's leg with machalcon in the center or something I might buy it. |
The cluster shows that creativity.
The "Stand on top of tank" Ultra modes shows that they ran out of ideas and didn't make all the zords compatible :p |

I also didn't much like the Ultra-Combinations from Hurriranger or Geki. They didn't use everyone in Geki, because Yellow and Blue were just running along side the Rhino. And in Hurri it was the same thing but with an elephant. And I just plain didn't like Ninja Storm.

I would much rather have the zords combine in a creative way (Like Dragon Caesar combining with the Mammoth, Saber-Tooth, and Triceratops, or hell, G12) rather than just stacking the zords on top of each other (Like what happened with Tor and the Thunder Zords, or whatever happened with Shinken-Oh) |

I'm just glad we didn't see 100 mechanized critters huddle up Katamari Damacy-style in Gaoranger.

I'm with SunRed on that one.

I've actually always been disappointed that Gokaiger didn't have some crazy mega robot pile up. Personally I do love the crazy combiners like the G12 though I think the SamuraiHaOh looks absolutely ridiculous. BY FAR the best of all the stacked combiners is Ultimate Dai Bouken. It's the most cohesive and good looking design of any Ultrazord/fully combined final robo.
|
i personally think the last sentai to that had a visually pleasing set of combining robots was Hurricanger. from first combo to the last, everything had a place to be, not just stuck on as an afterthought. they even omitted the dolphin from one combo instead of tacking it on carelessly. i prefer they did that than have it say, split down the middle and become a hat or something.

Well, I love the GoGo Machines from Boukenger and the way that they combined. It was utilitarian and functional, which makes perfect sense for the GoGo Machines. Everything piled on was a great fit for that meka in my mind.

I have watched only the first eps of both RPM and Go-onger so I can't really comment on the Engine mekas from those shows. The basic combination looks pretty neat, although the wasp waist (because of tiny little BearRV being the combination point) is a little disconcerting. ;) |
