armored suits
Can anyone explain to me why when the Power Rangers fight hand-to-hand,they wear basically PJs,but when they're safely inside their Megazord, they wear more armored cersions of the suits? Seems backwards.

You mean in Samurai? Mainly to sale toys really, Ranger mecha don't really sale too well in America as they do in Japan. But that's funny that you bring that up, I never thought about that lol!
|
Barring the technicalities of reusing footage and whatever other intricate details may explain it, I guess there could be some convoluted reason of the Megazord requiring more of their "symbol power" to run.
|
True, it doesn't make much sense (and it doesn't help that they never even did bother trying to explain it), but I like them as they look pretty cool. I think it wouldn't have been too much to film footage of them fighting outside mecha with those suits, to give them more credibility as power-ups instead of mere pilot suits.

What I love about the Mega Modes (Yes I am a proud Samurai Apologist lol) is that they really highlight the Megazord battle as the highlight/finale of the episode. I remember as a kid when I would watch MMPR that the megazord battle was my favorite part. it seemed extremely important, and like a special moment. So for Saban to try and emphasize that by filming all the new cockpit footage is really wonderful, especially considering my lack of enthusiasm for the rather bland looking Shinkenger cockpit footage. In short I don't care at all about why megamode is needed in an armored battle station the size of two skyscrapers. It's all part of the escapism.

I only saw Shinkenger one or two times when it first came out. I didn't realise Samurai's cockpit footage was different.
|
Yeah, those are shot in the US, to remove all the Japanese backgrounds and such
|
I bought the Mega Mode figures, over the regular ones, because I like the design better. Kind of wish they'd use them more often.
|
Mega Mode exists because originally Samurai was just going to be a toyline with the Samurai Rangers being an upgrade to the original MMPR Rangers. Look on BoA's website. You can see pics of the prototype morphing rangers with Tommy, Billy, and Jason heads. This is also why Mega Modes have the mouth plates.
Anyways, when Saban bought PR back and started making the Samurai show, BoA had already began work on the "Mega Mode" figures, so they asked if Saban would incluled them in the show so they didn't have to start from scratch. Saban agreed and refilmed the Megazord cockpit footage with Mega Mode costumes become that was probably the easiest to replace. |
Well also, one could argue that fighting with that armour would make them slower & less agile, which is something they don't wanna deal with unless they absolutely have to. When they're inside the Megazord, this isn't an issue because they're generally pilots rather than physically fighting themselves, and the armour could serve as a last resort defensively if an attack was to break through the magic glass or whatever.
That's what went though my head as I was looking at these guys in London Drugs, anyway hah. |
How in the world did they intend it as a upgrade to the original rangers? It sounds so bizare

The only reason I dont like the mega mode is that the actors are less animated and more stiff in them.It doesnt let them move around and express feelings as easily.I mean their faces are hidden so they have to express it through motions.
Would been cooler if they did something like Jungle Fury. When they got their Master modes, only thing that changed was they got boosters(which were small but worked),white replaced the black color, and they got small shoulder pads. But yet you still realized they were more powerful and they could move the same amount. They even looked cooler.lol That and the megasword. Why use a new one when the old one worked fine.Im guessing its so kids dont go around stabbing the shinkenmaru down into their parents sofa pretending its the megazord cockpit.lol |

They use new footage in the Megazord fights to make them more appealing because Zords toys are harder to sell in the US which is why they only use Mega Mode and Battlizer in that footage. The Rangers sale fine on their own, but to get the kids excited (myself included) to see the Ranger's new their form in the final show down within their Zords. Making that part of the show more appealing when it use to be boring and rushed in some seasons. |
In short - the "Mega Mode" exists because of a toy/marketing partnership with Saban Brands and Bandai of America. The action figures sell MUCH BETTER than the MegaZords do to kids. It's actually marketing genius.

Even now as an adult, I still get more excited to see a SH Figuarts figure from a Sentai series, than I do seeing a DX mecha. |
