You call the shots (Kamen Rider Edition)
 

Okay, let's say you were chosen to pick a Kamen Rider show to be adapted in america. This show will air along side Power Rangers but will be targeted to a slightly older audience (13 and up). Also the show will be produced by Toei and not Saban.

which show would you pick?

Me personally, I would choose either Kamen Rider W or Kamen Rider Den-O, but most likely W.

I would pick Kuuga, that way we could get Decade.

Kamen Rider OOO.
That show is absolutely perfect to be adapted for an English series.

I'd like to see Faiz or Kabuto.

If I was going with Toei, I'd pick Fourze! Because space is popular as hell and no-one can get enough of crazy mullet hair!

Another pick for me would be Kamen Rider 555 or Blade.

OOO or possibly Fourze since if they wanted to, they wouldnt have to change much from the high school motif.

But OOO definetly i would love to see an adaptaion of that show

Kamen Rider OOO, because it has one of the correct formulas for adaptation. It has the depth of story, the humor to keep a younger audiance interested, it has the characters, and it has the powers. Plus toy sales.

I'd buy the hell out of that.

My first pick is W, but they'd have the devil's task of finding someone to do the part of Shotaro justice.

So I'd go with Den-O.

I still wish KR got adapted regularly. Just to see what they come up with. Idealy I'd just like it played in NA with subs and toys sold at retail. :D

Even if the coin-scanning gimmick has been gutted by BoA to be 6 OOO henshins that just repeat in a cycle that you don't even need medals for?

I'd go with Blade. I'd largely keep the plot the same, but I'd make Chalice female and play up the relationship with Blade as a romance. I think it would resonate more with a Western audience than the bromance version from the original series and make the ending a lot more powerful.

I would say OOO but I think W should come on air first, not sure why I mean I do want the combo change series a lot (no-money though) but it makes more sense to have W first then OOO.

I'd get behind that if the show were aimed more at the 12-15 crowd. The drama would be suitable and given how immensely popular the sci-fi and superhero genres are right now, I don't think the suits are too overly flashy to suggest that they're kiddy. I'd definitely redo a lot of the fight scenes and all of the special effects.

Oh, definitely 12-15 age group. If I wanted something dumb for little kids I'd bring over Fourze.

I agree with OOO; as I am loving it right now and it would work great. I think W would be good too.

I would take Kabuto and feed it an element or two of Tiger & Bunny.

Setting:
- Year 1999 a meteor strkes an island where a biodome is located
- The Warms are called Zenites, mutant insects that are able to grow into bipedal forms
- A government-funded organization named ZECT(Zenite Extermination Combat Team) is formed fending off Zenites that enter the city
- Realizing that the Zenites are stronger despite their efforts, prototype combat suits called Masked Rider suits are created housed within mechanized devices called Zectors, and the ones who don these suits are called Masked Riders.
- ZECT gets part of its money from the government, but the other half from hosting a TV show that shows live feed of the Riders fighting making them appear as "Superheroes".

Characters:
Kabuto: The aloof veteran who is ranked highest, and considered the perfect soldier.
Gatack: A random guy who failed to be a ZECTrooper numbers of times, but has been selected by his Zector and now fights as a rider.

TheBee: A Boy Scout-type of guy who is respected by members of ZECT, and fights to pay for medical bills of his fiancee who has been in a coma due to exposure to radiation of the meteorite. Detests Kabuto and considers him a menace to ZECT.
Sasword: A man who follows the code of the Bushido and has mastered many fencing techniques throughout the world.
Drake: Cowboy drifter who likes having a good time and only fights whenever he wants.

Kickhopper, Punchhopper: Enigmatic Duo who do Black-Ops works for ZECT.

W would be good to adapt, I would make Phillip's American counterpart female and make the partner relationship a lot stronger. I'd also include a lot more of how Skull influenced all of the characters and events of the series and remove Akiko

I think Fourze would work well, hell it's already set in a high school and around the daily problems of teenagers so half the work is already finished for them. More importantly though it has great action sequences and lots of chances to make a fuck load of toys.

Shin prease. That'd be pretty fackin great with modern effects. W wouldn't sell and I don't think America would treat it well enough anyways.

First pick: W - Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd century style. Elementary my dear Phillip.

second pick: OOO - Spider-Man personality. With great power, comes great responsibility.

third pick: Wizard - A traveling magician with his lovely assistant.

Why wouldn't W sell?

There's lots of options for toy sales. Not as many as OOO, but still when you figure that they'd likely do multiple size classes and versions they could get a lot out of it.

Then again, it's BOA, so I take it back. You're probably right.

I actually think W is one of the easier sells to an American audience. With the US's love with cop dramas, I imagine it wouldn't be a hard sell for a detective series.

I wonder how they would react to two people becoming one though, assuming they keep that.

How would you make it kid friendly though? I mean the idea of a cop drama/Sherlock Holmes style Rider series sounds epic. But with the Dopants basically being like drug addicts...., I'd be interested to see what you would do with the Memories for a Nickelodeon audience.

Don't use them directly? make a memory reader for the dopants so that it doesn't look so drug-like? Something along those lines.

As for the story itself just drop the power is addicting angle.

I don't think you need to change that at all. It would basically make a subtle drug PSA. American's love that shit. Teaching kids the dangers of drug, or anything, abuse. AND it wouldn't interfere with the show and it's story/subject matter.

But surely Nick won't want to show them consuming the drugs and becoming addicted to it.

Perhaps the rights for Kamen Rider could be bought by someone other than Saban and/or Nick.

Ah, but they're not actually drugs. And W himself uses Gaia Memroies, so it's less a drug parallel and more a message on any kind of abuse of substances.

Ah. It's just that most channels aren't as strict as they were in the 90's, with TV being allowed to get away with a lot more.

Especially if it's not just gratuitous shock value and has narrative sinificance and/or an actual message.
