Power Rangers R.P.M. - Just how good was it?
One of my FAVORITE Power Rangers series, it captured the same kind of magic that I get from watching Gokaiger ... in the sense that the characters are interesting and the team as a whole is fun to watch, especially their interactions with each other.
But how much did you like it? |
More than that poll can illustrate.
RPM blew me away. I'd heard good things about the series, but I still wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was. Everything about it was perfect. |
I don't care that they used a recycled storyline (Dillon and Tenaya 7 vs. Andros and Astronema) ... I thought the idea of the "end of the world" setting, with the CONSTANT un-morph fight scenes was amazing.
Ziggy was one of the best comedic characters in television (reminded me of "Seth Cowen" from The O.C. ... geeky and nerdy and tries to be a ladies man). Dillon played his "bad brooding boy" part well, and Scott was the perfect "flawed leader" ... and I'm glad the series didn't revolve around his character (like it had with all the other Red Rangers from Mystic Force thru Jungle Fury). |
I liked it because it was good quality show, but I would have upgraded that to LOVE if they did more of that breaking the 4th wall stuff like they did in that one episode where they ask why the zords have huge anime eyes :D

Amazing in nearly every way.
And not just because the story was dark. But because it had DEPTH; featuring characters we could actually give a crap about!!1 |
i've seen episode one and like what i have seen, really need to watch it
|
I loved every second of it. My heart was won over at "AHM SCOTTISH".

Loved this series, Flynn competes with Billy for my favorite Blue Ranger and I think every series needs more Ziggy Grover.
|
My absolute favorite of all Power Rangers. None compare, in my mind.
|
I only thought it was an okay season. It was a good way to end the franchise before going all edit crazy on MMPR but to me, their were better seasons.
|
Put me in the loved camp, despite not getting around to finishing it on Netflix.
It either took away or at least toned down my one big gripe with Power Rangers, that being the needless overacted one-liners that they feel the need to throw in during fight scenes. Though that may be helped by the fact that the actors actually had at least some acting chops. (Sup Samurai :() |
One of the reasons I was such a fan was because of the writing - for once you didn't have writers trying to go through translated Japanese scripts and episodes trying to fit their chopped up Americanized story in to the Japanese footage. Instead they just shot their own footage, abandoned the silly concepts (Engine Soul for Engine Cell), and really made you feel like you were watching a show about a special group of individuals who have the ability to transform in to "super heroes" to try and save the last bit of civilization.
The backstories of Ziggy (mob), Scott (never had father's full affection), Summer (former rich snob), Flynn (dreamed of being a super hero), even Gem & Gemma and Doc K (Alphabet Soup prisoners since childhood) ... just really fleshed out the characters because once you knew their backstory, the way they acted made SO much sense. And Shadow Puppets ... come on, that was awesome. |
For Power Rangers, I think this season was proof enough that the show CAN actually be good beyond nostalgia. Given everything involved, it's a damn good show on it's own, even if I prefer Go-Onger over it.
(I should have every reason to like RPM more, I like that type of story more, but I also like funny, lighthearted stuff, and well Go-Onger wins out for me just based on the way I feel, but that doesn't negate the fact that this is a great season even if you don't like PR that much anymore/prefer Sentai/anything like that.) Hope that made sense. :D |
RPM, like In Space, was proof that Power Rangers can be original. I loved it to bits. I probably have to watch it another time on Netflix.

Loved this show...
All of the rangers were likable... Ziggy was great comic relief without being annoying, had great fight scenes, I was in love with Dr. K, liked the fact that they used a character name from Escape from New York (Fresno Bob) |
RPM was awful. It was nothing more than Mad Max/The Terminator with power rangers tossed in. Go-On was not fantastic, but at least a few of the fights were fun and the go-on wings were a nice addition. RPM is probably one of the worst PR series I have seen. I will never understand the devotion it gets.
|
The reason we enjoy RPM is that despite the somewhat derivative premise (and it is, no argument there), the characters were well developed and well acted, which is something of a rarity in PR. I haven't cared about an entire PR team as much as I did with RPM since PRiS.
That, and Doctor K was possibly the single greatest episode in the franchise. Never before has a PR mentor character had such an interesting, somewhat creepy, and tragic backstory as she had. How often do non-ranger characters ever get that kind of development!? And this was a show with a larger-than-normal number of rangers and was only 32 episodes! The amount of characterization was unprecedented for PR. |
RPM was a ok series. Not the greatest. I feel like it's a SYFY b- movie with PR in it for half of it and a PR series at the end.

RPM: Love it or hate it?
While I thoroughly enjoyed Power Rangers RPM and had the general impression that it was near universally loved, I've been hearing some different opinions of people thinking the show is utter garbage. So I decided to start up a thread/poll to get a better idea on what the general consensus of the show is (at least for the Tokunation community). Did you love RPM? Does it suck? What are your reasons(this part is particularly important to me, so please comment and don't just hit the poll :))
|
I honestly enjoyed RPM, even the redone the villian is my sister storyline. The only complaint I have is on Disney for only showing it at 5 am on a saturday morning. And I think the poor timeslot hurt the series. I loved the end of the world story, I loved the Octanes.
|
RPM is an excellent series, providing some drastic and much-needed changes to the PR universe.
|
I just watched the first couple of episodes, and it's not as bad as I expected. Yes, it feels like a SyFy Original movie, but at least it's creative with its storyline and characters. I'll continue to watch this and Engine Sentai Go-onger to do a full analysis on both shows.
