Of the Super Sentai titles made during the Showa era (1975-1988), which is the best?

Flashman.

Another tough one- I like Sun Vulcan... I really like Liveman... but Battle Fever J is a special brand of wacky. Prolly not a favorite of many, but there you go.

Every time I see the term Showa I think of Shower :lol Dynaman is the one that made the most impression on me, so I'm going with that.

Liveman - It was pretty big at the time given that Shima Daisuke(Amemiya Yusuke/Redfalcon) and Mori Megumi(Misaki Megumi/Bluedolphin) were already well-known entertainers. The story is still pretty interesting.
Denjiman - The suits felt very advanced for toku at its time. Simple yet awesome.

In case you missed it last year, TV Asahi aired a Super Sentai 35th Anniversary special before Gokaiger aired. Based on a poll they conducted, here are the top five Showa era Super Sentai titles:

1. Himitsu Sentai Goranger (1975)
2. Choujuu Sentai Liveman (1988)
3. Choudenshi Bioman (1984)
4. Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan (1981)
5. J.A.K.Q. Dengekitai (1977)

Having Goranger at #1 was obvious and predictable, as it was the very first Sentai show. Despite having the shortest run in the franchise, J.A.K.Q. apparently has a very large cult following. But perhaps the biggest surprise of this list is Bioman, as it's not really talked about much online.

I voted Liveman, but that's the only one I've seen much of. I liked what I've seen of Goranger, JAKQ, and Battle Fever J, as well.

Only one I've seen any of is Bioman. Bioman is kind of awesome...

No surprise that Liveman is in the lead.

I voted for Bioman, as it was the title that got me started with Super Sentai. Liveman, Sun Vulcan, Flashman and Battle Fever J round up my top five.

Liveman for me, with Maskman a close second.

Thing is, only the first Cossack was any good.

I haven't seen all of Flashman and Changeman, nor have I really seen too much that came before Dynaman, so right now, Liveman is my favorite of this era.

After watching the first three episodes and pretty much being blown away by it, I feel compelled to vote for Liveman.

As of today, Liveman is in the lead with Battle Fever J and Bioman tied at second place. Sun Vulcan is now fully fansubbed, so watch the series now.

I wish I have seen a Showa series from beginning to end, and I only saw a few episodes of Maskman (which isn't bad). I heard alot of great things about Changeman but never get to check them out. But I think I'll cast my vote for Sun Vulcan, simply because it is the series that I remember the most from my youth, so it does hold some sentimental value from me.

this is an easy one, Liveman. It did a lot of things first in the world of sentai, not only that it just had the best story in the showa era.

I gave up on Changeman after the first four episodes due to lack of character development and very bland pacing. Also, the commander is a total asshole and, IMO, the real villain of the show. Production-wise, it looks like a severe downgrade from what's been shown from Sun Vulcan to Bioman.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the sports bras they're wearing.

At least Flashman made up for that whole mess.

Yeah 4 episodes is PLENTY of time to expand on all 5 characters. I mean hell, they should have had each one of them explained fully in GREAT detail by episode 1. I mean 50 episodes is to short to have any kind of character building right?

If someone doesn't like a show after 4 episodes please don't belittle them for it. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. In a respectable manner. You're showing no respect for others.

When a person uses a pretty poor use of logic for it I am going to question it. Maybe the sarcasm was a bit thick, but the point I made is 100% valid.

Sorry but your logic isn't valid. Areaseven has just as much right as anyone else to not watch something if they don't want to or don't like it. If he didnt like 4 episodes then so what? Maybe he wouldnt have liked the other 45 so why waste his time?

And Drakkhen (a.k.a. KingRanger over at HJU), don't drag this any further, as there is no version of this where you come out on top. Maybe you're right about some parts of your argument, but it's all on you. Because if we don't like a certain favorite series of yours, there's just no damn point in avenging it.

You miss the entire point. He said he stopped watching because there was no character development. There was, but lets say there wasn't. It's a 50 ep series. They spread the character development through out. Not liking it is one thing, saying after only 4 eps that you are quitting because of that reasons seems kinda WTF IMO.

Oh yeah I forgot. This is tokunation. Well resume your what ever. I guess people don't want to get into any kind of real discussion around here.

If there wasn't enough development in the first few episodes why should someone have to wait another 10 or 15 or 20 to get that pay off? If someone can't enjoy something after nearly 2 hours worth of watching footage then I think it's fair for them to say that they lost interest or there wasn't enough development.

And please don't pretend to smear us with negative comments. We have done nothing wrong here. We're trying to protect our users, all of them. If someone blatantly and pointlessly attacked even you I would do the same thing I'm doing for Areaseven. Our staff is here to ensure every member of our community is given a fair chance to speak their opinions in a reasonable manner. However in every instance that you have a "discussion" with someone you go completely out of your way to insult, belittle, and attack them. They aren't discussions with you. There needs to be a vote on here about the most disturbing thing ever in a Toku series. I think she'd win, or come very very close.

And how did JAKQ ever win anything? They're Henshin took like twenty minutes! Go to base, get in the pod, wait for the pod to lower, wait for the pod to dock, change one at a time, emerge from the pod, THEN go off to the bad guy.

I dunno. There's that Kabukicho baddie in episode 3 of Akibaranger.

I really need to check out J.A.K.Q. Apparently, Ishinomori was aiming to do a realistic take on Sentai, and the viewers didn't like it. However, for some reason, it's become a cult classic, landing at #5 on the TV Asahi's poll for Best Showa Era Super Sentai title.

I feel like an idiot. It just hit me, right a few seconds ago, that JAKQ stands for Jack Ace King Queen. ... I feel like an idiot.

I didn't like the clip of it I found on Youtube, while looking for Big One's Henshin. Their superweapon is a civil war cannon, the enemy was just a guy in silver facepaint. I'm surprised that didn't crash the whole super sentai series all together. (And yes, I know. I'm a product of the American Educumacation System)

Flashman is an excellent series. Good suit design, outstanding fight choreography and music. And Sara/Yellow Flash is such a hottie.
