Pacific Rim After-Movie Thread (Spoiler Heavy)
I figured since the movie is finally out and people might want to discuss how they felt about it or their favorite parts without worrying about all the spoiler tags,I would make this thread with the warning in the thread title.
So,without anymore hesitation, someone find me my goddamn shoe. |
I thought it rocked the party which rocks your body. The fight in Hong Kong was insane, the flashback sequence was intense, and the finale was amazing. Can't wait to see it again!
|
gonna see it tomorrow hopefully its better than atlantic rim.

So I saw this yesterday and loved every minute of it. I'd gush about it, but I have no idea where to start. Good action, good CGI, good character moments, good character interaction. This movie has it all.
|
That last scene with Hannibal chou though. :lol
|
Good lord this movie is amazing I loved every moment. I really hope they can do a sequel. Also I gotta say this chain sword FTW. I also love Hannibal, man I really want a figure of Leatherback and that category five kaiju it looked sick.
|
I know the fight with Leatherback had it's cheesy one liner ending, but god I loved it.Also Ron Pearlman and Charlie Day...wow.I know they're in talks of a sequel, and if it does get made,I hope we see a bigger variety of jaegers.2 of the four lasted maybe a minute even though they were really hyped.
|
This film is SPECTACULAR. I've seen it twice, plan on going two more at least, will buy nearly every Jaeger figure they release.
Everything is done so well. Action, design, pacing, character development... it all just WORKS to an amazing degree. But if I had to pick one element I liked best it would be the treatment of Mako. Any other action movie probably would've gone through the cliche "She can't pilot because she's a girl" plot point, but for the entire time onscreen Mako is shown honest respect and serious development. Its so rare for action films to have well-rounded female characters these days and Del Toro pulled it off. |
Definitely enjoyed it a lot. Not my favorite kaiju movie by any means, but a really good solid action movie. If I had one criticism it's that the action was hard to make out at times(for example I wasn't always clear which kaiju was which in the big final battle), and I went to the 2D show. Can't imagine how hard it was to follow in 3D. But it was still very well done.
|
The movie wasn't hard to follow at all in 3D, in fact I think the 3D was excellent and I don't even like 3D. (AND I found out it's post-converted. WTH?) I only bought the 3D since the 2D showing wasn't convenient. My mum was watching it with me (she loves these kinds of movies) and she could make out everything just fine unlike, well, a lot of films with this level of action. Even the final underwater battle, she recognised the difference between Scunner and Raiju. (but didn't know who was named who)
This movie exceeded expectations. The story wasn't a novella, but it was solid and well-done beyond what most non-action movies even do these days. Deffinately a tale worth telling and not just a vehicle for fights to happen. Survival against increasingly adverse odds plus character backstory and EXCELLENT world-building. And I mean excellent. The way the Kaiju work, the way the world reacts. So genuine. All the characters were well-done, even the punk Chuck who managed to redeem himself and, again, in a genuine way. Mako was probably my favourite, and her flashback to Onibaba was really, really well done. Plus on top of it all, every scene felt perfect. There will be no fast-forwarding to action scenes when I get this. But man, what action. All clear, are fluid, and really, really intense. You literally felt like you were there and experiencing everything the characters were. The Hong Kong fight was ludicrous and Gipsy Danger is awesome. I seriously have a hard time pinning down anything this movie actually did wrong, or even not "well." It was a very well-crafted, well-realised story. Nothing felt truely lacking or poorly-concieved. It all felt, well, perfect for the story. The only things I would change is give Coyote Tango, Cherno Alpha and the boss aliens more screentime. In regards to the latter, not even that much more, just a few more scenes showing them building Kaiju. But more time for those two Jaegers. (though I'm glad Strker was so prominent since I thought GD would be the all-around star) But really, it's a small thing when you realise the only reason they probably weren't exposed was because the movie would be close to three hours if we got to see them fight before their last battle. I am more than stoked that this movie exists. I.e. that it not only was made, but is this good and well-realised. This will go down in history, no doubt, as a proud moment in Toku history on both the giant robot side of things and the Diakaiju side. That those genres were so so well adapted and realised stateside with such love and respect and just a genuine want to not reimagine, not put a new spin on, but simply take what people love and make it better-looking and better-realised. And yet for all it's homage and inspiration taken and respects paid, it manages to be it's own. That is something I wouldn't think possible, especially these days. Quote:
Mako and "RAH-LAY" (that was pretty funny, too) never even kissed. Hell, there wasn't even anything expressly romantic. Just an intensly strong bond that is more complex than "you pretty me want kiss you." When they just hugged when it was all over, that felt more emotional than any fish-fighting lip-smacking toughe-grabbing... what were we talking about? You have no idea how impressed I am at this level of restraint by Hollywood. Really made both characters seem a lot deeper than most protagonists than is typical... or even some of the atypical. |

Oh,and by the way,am I the only one that really wants a plushie Kaiju skin parasite? |

Plus, I didn't find it cluttered since they kept things clear. They didn't have just one big tussle of five. They let the big guy come in just after, like a final boss. Quote:
That thing was fucking creepy. But so realistic. Oh yeah, the effects were bang-on. Everything looked so real. |
Just got back from seeing it so I'll need a moment to articulate my thoughts on it. But holy shit I loved it! I went in expecting a realistic/non-goofy take on Super Sentai but it's actually closer to Evangelion with how the Kaiju and the Jeager work. Lastly, to those who have their doubts about the film... GO WATCH IT!

Also yes,it could come with a small scale Pearlman that it can eat.lol |
Love this movie. I'm very happy it didn't disappoint. There were a few things that didn't make sense but most of it is unknown to anyone in the movie as well (stuff with the aliens). I also don't get why Charlie didn't just get them on then radio or phone after he linked with the baby and found out the plan wouldn't work. A helicopter ride and rushing to the command center seemed like nothing but a device to create urgency. Why not just add some dialogue explaining why he couldn't get them on the radio? I know it would have cost too much but seeing more early Kaiju battles would have been cool.
|
I liked this movie a lot. The scene where Hannibal Chau gets eaten and his return in the stinger still makes me laugh when I think about it. There are a LOT of moments from the movie I like even more when I think about them.
Really wish the Russian and Chinese teams got more screen time, though they did some awesome stuff when they entered their fights. Honestly wish there was more Knifehead too. It and Onibaba might be my favorite kaiju designs. Raiju too. I really liked the shot of it swimming towards the boat. |
My only wish is that Raiju had gotten more screen time, heck, any kaiju that wasn't Otachi or Leatherback needed more screen time.
|
Just saw it and loved it. Really have no major complaints, I enjoyed every second of the movie.
Also, hell yeah, Australia represent! We never get such a spotlight, it was good to see. Eureka Striker was a total badass, I really, really hope we get something akin to Monsterarts of at least Gypsy Danger, Eureka Striker and Knifehead. They would just be amazing and there's so much accessory potential for Gypsy Danger. I bet the makers of the new Godzilla are quaking in their boots. I never thought such an excellently done, exciting kaiju movie would ever be made, let alone one with such a good critical response. The bar has definitely been set. |

Saw this film three times:
1. Dolby Digital 2D 2. Dolby Atmos 2D 3. IMAX 3D And among these three times, the Dolby Atmos 2D version was undoubtedly the best way to experience it. |

Just saw it earlier this afternoon and my thoughts are almost nothing but positive. The only real "problem" with the film and this could have just been my theater, is that the narration at the beginning and quite a bit of the dialogue throughout was inaudible. It's someone turned the vocals down and everything else up.
The movie itself however? Brilliant. Del Toro and his team have crafted an incredible universe for these characters to inhabit. It really feels like the ultimate nitty gritty version of Gundam/Eva/Macross/Sentai/Other mecha shows grounded into a harsh reality. The technology is strong but archaic compared to what we've come to expect from our usual mechanized heroes, which makes it all the more believable. The bit about the dinosaurs having been even more primitive Kaiju was a stroke of awesome as well. Showing us that our world has been visited in this way more than once, now it's just more easily inhabitable. The creatures/aliens in the other universe/dimension were measly when compared to the beasts they could create but often times those with great power to wield have none of their own. The Kaiju were a bit generic but they served their purpose well. The characters mostly sold me as well. Mako, Raleigh, and Stacker for sure. While the Aussie team felt to be forced stereotypes I did love the Striker Eureka and their dog mascot :p However let it be said that Ron Pearlman and Charlie Day added absolutely nothing to this film. Literally anyone could have played those roles. Charlier Day especially was just someone saying lines, I didn't believe he was who he was supposed to be. By the main trio of characters were rich and deep. And while the mecha designs were a bit strange they were fun and very grounded in reality. They were sensible, not over the top. Just as I would expect them to be if something like this actually happened. Miss Kikuchi's performance was probably my favorite. It was fantastic to see an actual native Japanese speaker play a major role in a summer blockbuster type film. And it's always great to see more strong female leads. She did a great job of selling me on Mako, especially with the ties to Stacker that she had as a child. Overall I have to say that the movie totally sold me on it's premise and characters. I know that it's $40 million opening weekend may leave the sequel in question but I'd love to see another film. Though after detonating the Danger on the other side I really don't see where it could go from here as far as sequels go. Though they could set it further in the future. |
That line about Dinosaurs get's mixed up because of the lightning fast delivery. He's not saying that the Dinosaurs were Kaiju, that the last attempt was during Dinosaur times, but the atmosphere was too oxygen rich back then, so when humans happened to pop up and fuck the air we breathe they suddenly had a much "nicer" home to take that'd be easier to terraform.
Which blew my freaking mind that a Hollywood action movie managed to include an environmental message that was... SUBTLE? *world ends* Also Charlie and Ron added nothing to the film what? Those two were awesome and added humour without being slapstick idiots. Perlman in particular was great, and fuck Charlie Day's charatcer was, like, pivitol in discovering how the Kaiju work. |

While I'm sure there's other people who could have done it, that's not to say they didn't work. Ron Perlman, I mean he just made the character memorable. If they just got some dude to play that he would've been forgettable. You need people who can take a character and elevate it, that's why they cast certain actors and not just whoever shows up first. |
After I got home the other night after seeing it, a lightbulb went off in that the dual pilot system of the Jaegers reminded me a little bit of W. It's not super direct, just the idea.

W, huh? EKUU-STOR-REEM!

Great movie.

That means that even though we saw an explosion on their side of the rift,A.We didn't see how much damage it caused, just that it closed the rift and B.They have the ability to open/create rifts when and wherever they want. |
I saw the movie in IMAX 3D and it was amazing. I know a lot of people hate 3D but for a large scale movie like this, you need to do it justice and see it like this. The 3D was so well done for the visual style it aimed for, even during the talking scenes it added a bit.
I love the Jeager designs a lot and the art style of the Kaiju. Its not like Transformers where they are trying to make Optimus Prime look as real as possible and falls into the uncanny valley for a lot of people. It is clear cut, colorful and well shot. Granted the sword thing was stupid but they could have explained the non use of the sword as it was a prototype that was being developed. The two pilot thing didn't bother me as well as the intro. I didn't mind Charlie Day as the scientist, probably since I've seen only a handful of parts of episodes of Its always Sunny. Mako was pretty cool but is it just me or when we first see her, she's super quiet and accent kinda made her hard to hear? Overall, I liked the movie sure people say it has shallow characters and the sword plothole but I liked the movie a lot. 8/10 Hope it gets a sequel or a prequel or anime or something. PS, this movie does not rip off Evangelion. Evangelion is about a whiny little bitch of a boy letting the world crumble around him. This is Kaiju punching action. I think the Japanese poster for this movie makes it sorta look like Evangelion with the way the Gipsy Danger looks in that art. |

The nice thing about having such an old race of alien creatures is that for them time probably seems to pass by very quickly. In the millions of years between their attempted invasions of Earth did they develop new and stronger Kaiju? Probably, but since the atmosphere is what held them at bay in the past, they may not be significantly different in the present. They may not be as aware of the flow of time on our side of the rift either, time may flow differently on their side. Therefor you can reason that humanity, being driven to protect itself would develop fantastic new technologies in a span of time that crosses generations, while for the aliens it could only be a couple years difference perhaps. Even if they did develop stronger kaiju we can see that at the end of everything with hardly any resources, that a damaged Mark 3 and a lone Mark 5 can take on a Category 5, albeit with heavy cost and casualty. That being said, after millions of years of design and development on the alien side, 8 years were all humans needed to put up a fight. If my theory holds about time flowing differently, then after a mere 50 or even 100 years I doubt the invaders would have developed Kaiju strong enough to decimate the planet again. The Jaeger tech would have advanced exponentially since their first encounters, well beyond the alien bio-tech. |

That being said,Mako knowing about the sword and Raleigh not is just a thing. She might have designed it into the redesigned Gipsy and Raleigh only knew about the old design. Also Mako could have hidden that memory from him, making the sword just for her because she was piloting for revenge. Quote:

I could see part of a sequel being a thing where the Jaegar research team has studied the DNA of the kaiju and started cloning their own, to be piloted using the drift. Like maybe a cyborg kaiju, with a mechanical section where the pilots are inside the rest of the monster. That way they could enter the rift and attack the aliens directly(at the end of the movie).
