Hyper Hobby Magazine Interviews Gen Urobuchi, Head Writer of Kamen Rider Gaim
1 Attachment(s)
The Rising Sun Tokusatsu Blog has posted an early preview of Hyper Hobby Magazine's interview with Gen Urobuchi, the lead writer in charge of Kamen Rider Gaim.
Several tidbits about this upcoming Kamen Rider project were revealed in discussion, including: Quote:
|
I'm on board with all of this.
|
Everything about this sounds amazing. Haters can hate the fruit all they want but I feel a return to the darker Heisei era coming! :D The 2 episode format has always irritated me, to the point that I tend to wait 2 weeks and watch the whole arc at once. And now that we know Wizard's final episodes will feature the Heisei tribute it makes much more sense why Gaim is both running later in production and why he didn't appear in Magic land.
|
I am loving this, every piece of this. The two episode arc needs to die, and I love he compared Gaim to Kuuga! BRING ON THE JUICY!

A more darker series? I can do that, as Ive felt Rider should be a more darker series than the last few. :lol Oh and- JUICY! |
I like every single word of this. Especially the dropping of the two-episode arc format.
I just hope it's not too like Faiz. ;) |
Like I've been saying, I want nothing more than this series to do a complete 180 from what people are expecting. Maybe just so Sentai can look back on this whole juicy thing and wonder how he could possibly have expected something cheerful to come out of this show. Maybe.

Dropping the 2-episode arcs?
Darker show like the early Heisei? Multiple Riders? YES! So much yes! If this show can keep up it's awesome premise then we will get a winner show, with every new reveal I'm looking forward more and more to Gaim. Please be awesome Gaim. :) |
I'm glad they're dropping the two episode story arch thing, that gets kinda annoying sometimes.
|
If it's anything like Blade, then count me on board.

Also: Pretty much what I was thinking :) |

I like the sound of those bullet points.
|
I'm getting Modoka vibes now. The fruit theme is a red herring. Having us thinking its going to be a light hearted show and then BAM we have a game changer and things turn dark quick.
|
People might want to dial back their hopes a little bit. the Producer for Gaim said the same about OOO being like an older Heisei show and it was just the Den-O - W formula.
Not saying they are lying or anything but its better to be surprised rather than have your hopes high and then crushed when they don't follow through with it D: EDIT: also with good old Toei if the changes cause toy sales to be low and ratings to go lower you know they will force the guy to go back to the formula :( |
Looking at the actual interview it mentions Zangetsu being like Ouja, well that can't turn out well for the other characters at all, now can it? It's also nice to get some idea of what the Riders will be like, but it's weird that he doesn't mention Gaim.
Also, the part that mentions Tomokazu Sugita(Kivat) helped him get the role was nice to know, especially that Urobutchi considers working on a Rider show a "dream come true". |
The Ouja-Zangetsu link makes me so hopeful. I'm really hoping we have another wild card rider like Asakura again, loved that guy.
|
I gotta say, I'm really liking what I see. Dropping the 2-episode format is a very good thing. My only hope is that it doesn't become entirely episodic then, but does indeed become more of a continuous story (or at least just have longer arcs).

So we will have badass stories with crazy looking designs? I can dig it. :lol |
I'm getting more and more hyped for Gaim as new info comes up. This talk of being like older Rider shows is certainly intriguing since I've finished Kuuga and am on Agito.
I really love what's come out in the past few years, but halfway through Wizard I did hit that realization of "This series needs a change of pace" - Gaim is shaping up to be just what it needs. |

Two part story arcs in the heisei era go all the way back to Kamen Rider Kuuga. But if he means ditching the two episode format as an overused crutch, then I'm fine with it. I don't nessicarily hate the two episode storyline format unless its something really story based like an Ultimate form (Wizard needed 3 episodes for the Infinity upgrade storyline). I like how Ryuki and Kabuto did thier story arcs, Ryuki's two episode stroyline format mostly only applied to the Mirror Monsters Shinji and Ren fought. Even then, later on, the Mirror monsters weren't the focus of the episodes. I'm only on episode 10 of Kabuto but from what I've seen, its been episodic and had a four episode storyline based on Thebee broken into two parts.
As for being "darker", after seeing the "darker" heisei series and seeing newer stuff like W, OOO and Wizard. Darker just means the ratio of serious characters to nonserious and how often death occours. Its not really that much that makes it different. Now if you showed me one of the gruesome deaths jn Agito I hear about I'll probably change my mind but still. |
Dropping the 2 episode structure= :)
Comparing to Kuuga= :D Comparing to Faiz= I can't really give a fair judgement as I've only seen the first two episodes but I want to say :/ |
*Gaim will abandon the two-episode story format used by every Kamen Rider series since Den-O. Well that sucks. I prefer the two episode format. *Urobuchi intends to maintain a more dramatic portrayal of Kamen Rider; comparing Gaim to early Hesei Riders like Kuuga or Faiz. So the show's last 10 episodes are going to suck? Greaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat. Seriously though, I really really hope this show is good, but the trailer shown has done nothing for me at all. I'm hoping it really pulls a Fourze on me. |

This should be exciting.

Also, Kabuto did it just as much as Den-O. Quote:

A formula shakeup sounds like exactly what Kamen Rider needs. Can't wait to see how the series turns out!
|
I'm digging this might watch faiz now cause DVD verstion are subbed to episode 36 on TV NiHon

I really don't see they will completely abandon that formula in Gaim, especially with Tasaki on board. Quote:

"There is no right choice" I already like the smell of it. |
I'm not buying into the hype just yet. And unless the show has oodles of character deaths, I doubt it will qualify as "dark".
Have we seen any monster designs as yet? What made Kuuga and Agito "Dark" was moreso the nature and visual cues of their villains. If the Riders are bright and cartoony, one should hope that the villains are totally grotesque in comparison. As for this guy's writing cred as the dude who made Madoka and oher shows like Fate....It might be a case of him trying something new in his writing style. Having a big name franchise like Kamen Rider on his portfolio is sure to be impressive for any future endeavours he might want to seek out. |
Well being "dark" doesn't really have to mean "killing somebody".
It could be "Doing good leads to a tragic end", or "Saving one person by sacrificing others". There are so many ways to play the game. I hope Buchi is going to bring the darkness in everybody's heart onto the screen. I am sure kids will have one hell of a memorable ride of their life with Gaim. |

While I still maintain that if you want your Kamen Rider show to be "dark" in tone, you should go all the way back to the original, which featured Shocker kidnapping innocent people and either experimenting on them or torturing them to death.
That having been said, Gaimu seems like it might be a strange combination of something which on the surface is silly (fruit based powers) and something "dark." This might work out nicely; strange combinations often can strike a balance between the two sides and offer a unique take. |

It's not character death. Having oodles of character deaths actually makes it cartoonish. It prevents the audience from getting attached to characters because we're losing one every 4 weeks. What makes a series "Dark" is simply how it's written. How the characters act and react, motivations, goals, and histories. Death does not equal dark. Death is just a crutch to make a show seem darker and more adult. |
This information has me intrigued. I don't mind the 2-3 episode story arcs, but it does feel a bit done to death at the moment. Let's see what their definition of dark equates to.
