Toei Channel Japan Price and Cable Package Details
1 Attachment(s)
Several days ago we received news about Toei starting a pay channel for streaming shows in the United States. Now we have a pricepoint and channel details for this new service!
Toei Japan Channel will operate on a $20 monthly subscription fee and be available through the MyGlobeTV cable service package. Toei will indeed add subtitles to the streaming programs after the first year, if the Channel is succuessful. At the moment exact programming schedules are unknown but Toei Japan's schedule does mention a variety of tokusatsu programming- including Kamen Rider Kiva, Kamen Rider W, Seiju Sentai Gingaman and Ninpu Sentai Hurricaneger. Thanks to member NGW for the heads-up! |
Toei Japan Channel to have $20/month subscription fee
Toei has announced that the recently revealed Toei Japan Channel, which aims to bring streaming footage of their Japanese station over to the states, amonst other content, will be requiring users to pay $20 a month for the use of the service.
If things go over well, we'll likely be seeing English subtitles, official subtitles, for some of our favorite shows. Personally, I'd love to support this but I cannot afford another $20 a month on top of my other expenses, especially not to watch programming I have no way of understanding. Definitely want to see this succeed though, even moreso if it means we can get officially subbed releases on dvd/bluray. Source: http://www.jefusion.com/2013/09/subs...s-a-month.html |
Wow, they're just setting themselves up for failure. No subtitles to start off, outrageous fee, I can just see this crashing out of the gate.
|
It is a damned shame too, I really want this to do well as I love what that could potentially mean for toku in the states. Just the chance at having Ryuki on dvd or bluray, fully subbed (officially) gets me all fangasm-y, but I can't support the channel myself and I don't know that many others will either.
|
It is simply Toei Channel in Japan being linked to the US.
Digital TV channel is asking for 1575 yen per month, so the extra cost is probably what the relay is charging you for the port. https://www.toeich.jp/?act=guidance-skye2&id=contact https://www.toeich.jp/?act=guidance-skyhd&id=contact https://www.toeich.jp/?act=guidance-skyhikari Here's the lineup for this month. http://www.toeich.jp/?act=top-top |
$20 is a bit much, but I really hope it does well. I wouldn't mind paying that to watch Kamen Rider legally. I hope it does well enough to warrant subtitles.
|
$20 a month is a little high, but if they do subtitle it all, and Comcast carries it, I'll give it a chance. But only if they are actually going to sub the shows.
|
Sorry, Toei, but especially at that fee, no subtitles at the start is going to doom you from the start. And I was somewhat hoping for this to succeed.. But combine it all isn't that great of a package by limiting the audience so much.
|
heavily considering getting this, even if its raw, I'd love to support it, 20 bucks a month is doable for me, though in order to get the free box i'd have to take a two year contract, which is what i'm thinking of
|
So, let me understand this. No subtitled shows for a full calender year, no Toku-related shows, limited service availability, and now a 20 dollar subscription fee?
Wow, what a wonderful buisness model for falling flat on your ass. |

That still doesn't make up for the BS of the rest of it though. |
This is baby steps from the way I see it. I have often thought of a world were we don't need to go through TV-Nihon, or Overtime, or Grownups In Spandex, because Toei (or anybody) starts releasing toku to us in a timely fashion, in Japanese, with subtitles for our language of choice. This could be just the first tiny step to that ultimate goal. We are practically there with anime because of services like Crunchyroll, Hulu, and even Netflix. But we did not get there overnight. Those of us who have the ability to support this, should.
Why did all of that sound like it should be read with a slow version of "Lets Go Kamen Rider" playing in the background or something? |
Baby steps is putting it hilariously lightly. Huge cost, specific package, no subtitles, US only, old toku shows. Even if this does succeed, which isn't looking the most likely of things right now, it may never reach beyond the United States and even if it does, I'm assuming I won't be watching Kamen Rider whatever subbed, in my living room, until I'm like fifty years old.
So unless Overtime and the gang decide to pack in because this took off, I'm thinking it's still a long long LONG time before fansubs are a thing of the past. If ever. |
The bigger question for me is. What the hell is myGlobe Tv?
|
I'd happily pay $20 a month if it was a decent, HD (where possible) streaming net service, even if it didn't have subtitles at first. Cable TV is such a rip-off though that I can't see myself going back to it, even for Toei stuff.
|
That show selection is kind of random.
|
FYI, the channel is NOT just the Toei Channel from Japan streamed on the internet. It's a completely different channel.

What is up with this fandom and its unwillingness to support the shows they love? first the fandom completely blows off shout factory when it comes to getting the last of beetleborgs released because its on streaming and now Toei, a company that loves to hold it stuff hostage and not release it for viewing, like beast wars neo and beast wars II, is making a channel. hell toei refused to give shout factory zone yet allowed them to release the rest of japanese g1 I don't know what you people even expected this channel to be, THIS IS A HUGE RISK, a risk I NEVER believed toei would do, and here we have a shot, TO SUPPORT THE SHOWS WE LOVE, and the fandom scoffs at it saying its overpriced. you get two tv channels, sure you might not want to watch the other one, but you got to figure that into the price. this is pretty much just like neon alley, which is an anime internet channel you can subscribe to. the reason the price is what it is is because this is a VERY niche market they are targetting, and they are playing it safe. not having subtitiles for a year sucks, but they are taking baby steps. if we support this as a community, and then they add subtitles, maybe one day they will release dvds, though if the fandom has proven anything to me, they won't buy it, they'll rather download it than actually support the shows they love |
This is a completely different discussion than the DVD/Shout! one. For that there's a legitimate lack of sales numbers to justify the creation of those last volumes. I'll agree with you for that situation people should not complain. With something like that, it's unavoidable when the sales numbers aren't there. There has to be a demonstrated demand for the product for them to produce it. Shout just isn't big enough to make tons of those sets, not sell them, continue to do so, and take huge losses from it.
In this situation we're being asked to pay for a service, that while it isn't expensive, isn't exactly cheap either. The main demographic is the nearly 400,000 Japanese speakers living in the US so subtitles while welcome aren't the initial point. But in order to get people like us with the promise of Tokusatsu, they need to have that available soon. Maybe not by day one but certainly before a whole year has gone by. It's a tough sell to ask people to pay $20 a month for 1 or 2 channels for a year or more just for the hope to eventually get subbed toku on them. If I knew I was getting subs from the get go I'd be all over it. That's a pretty damn good lineup of shows, Gingaman? Hell yes. But if they aren't subbed then I might as well grab the Hi No Tori torrents, even with them being hard to find. |
It's pretty cool and all but it's just not for me. I don't really have a lot of time to sit and watch TV but when I do I like to watch multiple episodes of a show at a time, hence why Netflix is perfect for me. Not being able to watch the show daily + not being able to understand a word of it when I do makes it a no-go for me.
Best of luck to the people that go for this. Hopefully it will lead to a wider selection of titles with more viewing options in the future. |

TV Japan provides limited products from Japan, and mostly stuck with news and informative programs from NHK (OK, some drama from TV-Tokyo alright). The company has been around for around for quite a while, and there are increasing voices for something more than just shows from 1 channel. Toei Channel is able to do that with their wide range programs. Potential subscriber numbers is already there. Toei doesn't need to worry too much about overcharging those people when TV Japan is asking for a lot more than 20US/month. |
I went to their order page and selected the Toei/Japanese package and selected mobile device. Went to cart and it said $0.00 due. And also stated that it's free to watch on mobile. (I'm assuming they mean the app itself is free, not the content.)
You can understand my confusion... |
I'm guessing this will be like an On Demand channel? Really, I think if they offer subtitles and maybe have it for about 12.99 or maybe had some sort of promo if you got other channels with it would be worth it. I know that a lot of toku with subs can be downloaded already but if the channel has something more rare or something I may not be interested in I may be inclined to check the shows out just cuz they are right there instantly able to watch and not have to hunt to download and who knows...just may end up liking it.
I also think a good idea would be to have current toku stuff on there too. |
