A conversation so awesome it deserved it's own thread.

Personally, I love a giant Super Robot. The more ridiculous the better. I know, I used to hate things likeG-12 Explosion and Samurai HaOh. But I ee the beauty in them now. And not just Sentai Super Robots. I love all Super Robots. Like the beautiful SRX-00 from SRW -

And Optimus Prime's various Super Modes throughout the Unicron Saga of Amrada/Energon/Cybertron. And those lovely TF gestalt's. Not so much RotF Devastator.. But the show version. Menasor (Personal Favorite).

But what constitutes a Super Robot? In my mind it has to combine to become what it is. Optimus Prime alone isn't a Super Robot. But when he combines with his trailer, or with Jetfire, he becomes one. Red Dragon ThunderZord/Ryuusei-Oh isn't a Super Robot. But DaiRenOh/Thunder Megazord is one.

You're mildly wrong. RyuuseiOh is a Super Robot. There isn't anything that classifies it as a real robot.
Being big, chunky, and a compete clusterfuck doesn't mean everything else isn't a super robot.

I never said that :p What I said was, in my mind, it has to combine. Volfogg isn't one, but Big Volfogg is. GaiGar isn't one, but GaoGaiGar is. Genesic GaoGaiGar is a beautiful perfect Super Robot of awesome.

Combining isn't a prerequisite, though.
Tetsujin 28, for example, is commonly considered to be one of the first Super Robots despite being one solitary unit.

That's an awefully good question. But I don't know enough about Mazinger to make a decision.

Go Nagai's work in the field of super robots should never be ignored. While combination between robots isn't a prerequisite, it almost always occurs in at least a power up of some sorts. Jet scranders, getter machines, etcetera. Some personal favorites from childhood include perennial classics such as Gaiking, Steel Jeeg, Mazinger, and Gakeen. Basically anything on a block of programming that was known as "El Festival de Robots" back in Venezuela.

Sentai stated that his thread is about Super Robots that combine, so even though Mazinger is considered to be a Super Robot variety, it is not the combiner that Sentai is looking for, so don't argue over the semantics.

No, he didn't.
He stated the thread is about Super Robots, plain and simple. The point about combining is that, in his eyes, it's a requirement to even be a Super Robot.
The thread isn't about Super Robots that combine. It's just assumed by the OP that a robot can't be a Super Robot unless it combined to begin with.

I'm not arguing semantics. I'm arguing wording (Which is the same thing, so I guess I am :lol). It's explicitly stated:
That this thread isn't about Super Robots that combine, just that Sentai believes that combining is what's necessary to be a Super Robot. Nowhere in the opening post, however, is it directly stated that "This is a thread for combining Super Robots."

Gattai by definition is Combining, so "Gattai Thread of Super Robots" = a thread about combining Super Robots. Plus this is his thread, so again, no more arguing over the semantics

The opening post doesn't acknowledge the single word in the title that's clearly there as an eyecatch.

Mazinger is composed of both the Mech and the Pilder so technically it does combine, allowing you to place it on your list.

But imo combiantion isn't a requirement.

I like Mugen Burning and Mugen Kaiseiju.

I love the Dancouga mechs: Dancouga, Nova and R-Daigun are simply lovely.
Individual modes, yet the complete mechs looks cohesive. Good stuff.

And it was the revoltech, honestly outside of SRW J and Dancouga Nova I don't know much about the franchise, but I love the designs, specially R-Daigun.

I really need to watch GaoGaiGar... at some point.

I've been trying to watch it for quite the long time(it feels like over a year now), it really isn't as interesting as I was lead to believe, maybe anime and I just aren't compatible...
Or, maybe I haven't gotten to the "good part" yet.

And of course no one payed mind to the Mugenbines. :p

Is the Brave Series still a thing?

Not really, but they still get new toys. Mostly based on stuff from GaoGaiGar(SRC's, D-Style kits, etc.).

The first half of the series is pretty average to be honest. It doesn't hit its stride until the villain switchover.

Yup, that sounds about right.

Godannar anyone? The series is so full of classic super robot tropes, it feels like a love letter. Modern revamps are fun, but it's good to see some original works now and then. This show hit the right story and character beats and kept me engaged despite the fan service moments peppered throughout. Kind of hard to watch it in the same room as my wife.

Average? Outside of the time where Choryujin pushed a meteor through a space portal and showed up a few episodes later fossilized, the first half of the series was completely generic and dull. I know it was a MoTW show, but it was so by the books I'm surprised the show managed to even salvage itself...

This is half on and half off-topic, but are there any other notable combiner Super Robot toy franchises out there besides Super Sentai/Power Rangers?

Well, Transformers technically qualifies as Super Robot, and I've heard that Transformers GO! series in Japan has some pretty nice combiners...

There's Mugenbine, I don't know much about it, but ShockerCon can give you more info.

There's Transformers Go! like Matrix said. There is a Samurai Team and a Shinobi Team both are composed of 3 Autobots, and can form 3 different modes.

Some of the combinable SRW mechs have been released in Kit form, but I'm pretty sure that those lost the combination gimmick.

And there's a cute D-Style GaoGaiGar which does keep the transformation in SD scale.

I'm sure there are more, just none that I can remember right now.

I love the D-Style GaoGaiGar line. I already have GaoGaiGar, ChouRyuJin, and King J-Der.
I really hope Big Volfrogg is the next one...

Those look good, indeed, I'm still trying to find a place I can import from anywhere in East Asia (since importing from America is too expensive).

Interesting, I've always wanted to know more about GaoGaiGar and Brave mecha in general, but I get completely lost each time. They do have some nice robots though. And the D-style combines! I couldn't tell just by looking at them, that's pretty sweet!
