To those who recommended I watch RPM on NetFlix: Thank you. Honestly thought I wouldn't enjoy it, but I'm loving it. The acting is great, the story's good. There's no damn comical moments yet.. Looking at you Samurai. So thank you.

Define "comical." Because RPM can be pretty funny sometimes.

RPM definitely has bursts of comedy. Its well handled though so no need to worry.

Well, no series is played completely straight and dramatic...

I know no series is, and I like a little comic relief. But, sorry Paul, Samurai just as to much slapstick.

Am I right in saying, though, that RPM has one of the worst openings in MMPR history? Good show, bad theme.

It is also the only Power Rangers show to never, ever, use the opening theme anywhere else in the show.

RPM is a fantastic show. I almost wanted to nominate it for "Let's Watch" but it's still too recent (just like MMPR is too old and too slapstick now). But glad you're enjoying the series.

I'm not worrying. I've already watched the series.

I watched the first few episodes of RPM on Netflix and was not impressed. Seemed like it was trying entirely too hard to be Super Serious (TM), and that tone did not match the Japanese footage at all.

Alternately, I checked out the first few eps of Go-Onger (TVN sub) and really enjoyed it. It's fun and silly and entertaining. This is one case, for me anyway, where the localization failed because it was trying to make a serious show out of a fun one, rather than the usual motif of making a funny show out of a serious one.

Still, it's cool that we can sit down and watch whole seasons of Power Rangers so easily (at least in the US). That's such a boon to me. :D

You were right. The humor's there but it's not in your face. No Bulk crashing through a table, more Ziggy being Ziggy. I'm really enjoying him in this.

My mistake.

RPM is hilarious. The best thing about it is that the humor is very smart. Nothing outlandishly slapstick, the jokes are very subtle and sarcastic.

I think the reason RPM becomes a gem is because it doesn't really rely on the Sentai footage at all. I'd dare say that 85% of the fight scenes in-suit is new footage, while the zord battles are all Sentai footage. I know Judd Lynn used more Sentai footage when he came in as EP, but I think Episode 3 ("Rain"?) is the only time I remember a lot of Sentai footage being used (with the monster that attacks the bridge).

Give RPM through Episode 16 ... if you don't love it by then, I'll concede my argument :)

Well Judd Lynn didn't have much choice seeing how the guy he replaced ate up the budget quicker then Homer Simpson at a 'all you can eat' restaurant. Heck Eddie even fired members of the RPM production staff just so he could use there saleries to hide his budget mistakes from Disney.

Finally watching it. Damn, this show is relentlessly entertaining.

Dr. K may now be my favorite tokusatsu character. Sorry, Zaruba.

Dr. K, in my opinion, is the best mentor Power Rangers has ever had, and Power Rangers has had som good mentors in the past. Besides being hilariously entertaining, her character development is very well done and she's very sympathetic. I would argue that Dr. K is the secret ingredient that makes RPM standout among other excellent series.

I actually haven't really delved into Power Rangers as an adult before this, but after I posted that, I watched the Dr. K focused episode, and damn, she's got some layers. Her and Flynn are definitely my favorites.

Also, can someone please clarify: who did the action direction for the new footage? Wikipedia says it was the guy who took over for Sakamoto after Disney got PR, but these action scenes are very Sakamoto-esque. The framing, the kineticism, even some of the moves are staples of his.

Koichi was VERY involved in RPM. There's an episode where Scott and Ziggy save an Asian woman and her baby from some Grinders in a park. That woman? That's Koichi's wife.

Well Koichi was technically in charge until Judd was able to get there after Eddie got fired. Sad thing is Eddie treated him like scum after he got fired.

Hmm, I'm not really a fan of the original ending. To destroy Dillon's character by revealing him as the big bad all along ruins one of the best Rangers in recent times, in my opinion. It may have been bold, and I simply love the idea of a "Ranger Black" episode, but it would be upsetting, plus lots of kids would be horrified. It does not really work from a marketing point of view either, and the only reason I see for sticking with it is to make a creative statement.

I'm glad Judd Lynn went with our current ending. It's a cliched happy ever after, yes, but I like my happy endings with my Power Rangers.

True, true. It was for the best. Al let that leaves him open to come back for PR 20.

Doubtful not just because the current Saban production team HATE the Disney era with a passion but also Dillion's actor last time I checked was still under investigation for assulting his fiancee.

I mean, yeah, it was scores better than the other Disney season, but you guys are WAY overreacting on calling it the beste thing ever. I guess we all want different things from our toku shows though, right?
