Two more Power Animals join the fray in our tribute to Power Rangers Wild Force. From Hyakuju Sentai Gaoranger, today we take a look at the DX Gao Bear & Gao Polar set! Bear & Polar were twin brothers of fire & ice who, befriended by Gao Yellow, came to Gao King's aid in Quest 9.

When combined with Gao King they replace Shark & Tiger to form Gao King Double Knuckle! When only Gao Bear is equppied and Gao Giraffe is substituted for Polar, Gao King Spear & Knuckle is formed! These powerful twins were a huge asset to the Gaorangers, that is until their power became too much for the King of Spirits and injured Gao Lion.

i may be wrong but isnt firing missles highly unusual for sentai/power ranger toys?

I remember in Wild Force, using the Black Bear and Polar Bear Wild Zords combination was too powerful for the Wild Force Megazord that it damaged the Lion Wild Zord which prompted the Rangers to find the Soul Bird, which they did along with the Gorilla Wild Zord, allowing them to form the Kongazord Megazord with the Gorilla, Black Bear, Polar Bear, Eagle and Bison Wild Zords.

These were cool, never had them but they were always my favorite arms.

These bears are freaking adorable. Look at thier faces, man. If I ever get into collecting Gaoranger, these will be the first aux zords I get.

It is pretty much. But when the sereis started introducing more and more zords each needing a different gimmick, you saw stuff like this.

Yup. basically the bears were too strong for the lion, and only the Zongazord could handle them. I didn't dislike the Kongazord at all, and thought it was quite clever how the eagle saw different use despite not being retooled, but I kind of wish this issue wasn't that the lion was too weak for them, since lions are typically the strongest in fiction like this.

It's not that Gaolion was too weak but the brothers power wasn't meant for him. It was meant for Gao Gorilla. So using them with him caused him great pain and stress because he wasn't the one meant to combine with them. Gao Hunter Evil got away with it later because of the power of Rouki.

Ah, see in Wild Force it was just shear power. But that makes more sense.

If I wish Gaoranger did one more thing, it's that it had another dedicated leg zord in addition to rhino and bison, so that you could have all the Megazords together without having two bison/eagles.

Well the original design sketches for the rest of the Power Animals, would have been 100 all together, do feature designs for quite a few new arms backpacks and legs. Though some of them never even had rough designs drawn up. There would have at least been some more alternatives, though still not as many leg components as you'd think.

Gao Peacock would have been amazing.

I've never liked Bear Zords, but those actually look okay.

Gaoranger/Wild Force fans sure are lucky this month!

Lucky that I am a MASSIVE fan of this series. Also lucky that Kickback picked me up a little something special for Christmas. Some silver chromed goodness is on it's way to me from Hong Kong as we speak! Don't know if it'll be here before the end of the month. But you can be sure I'll share pics :)

So, I know this isn't the right thread, but I figured it's most relevant. I heard WF and Gaoranger were pretty close, is this true? Like story wise. I'd be surprised if this were.

Also, this was back when BOA still sued BOJ moulds, but I heard the falcon zord was different?

The WF Falcon featured an electronic sound box on the tail that was not present on Gao Falcon. And the WF Bison was an un-transformable electronic walking piece that was substituted for the real bison so as to add more play value to the US line.

The shows are fairly similar in basic plot though.

Only the Kongazord's bison was imobile. The regular WF Megazord had the proper bison.

Oh I know it was just for the Congazord set. It was also repainted in purple for the "Ultimus" set which came later.

wait, kongazord used the exact same tooled eagle for its zord?

As far as I know, yes, since the Gorilla and bears were available seperately in Japan.

The same tooling was used for Gao Eagle and WF Eagle universally. To combine it for Gao Muscle/WF Congazord you just insert it under the diecast arms under the gorilla and lock it into place. Though I can't recall if the US one featured diecast. You just rotate some parts a couple different ways and boom, all done. The bison was retooled in the US into the motorized piece but the others were left alone for that set.

I just discovered the Ultimus Megazord thanks to you, and I'm both impressed and disappointed. I'm impressed by the fact that there's a US release of GaoKong, and disappointed that GaoKong (who wasn't even in the show) got released in the US, but GaoElephant didn't.

Ultimus would've been the perfect place to release the Elephant zord, too.

Ultimus is just some ridiculous made up combo anyway. Soul Bird can attach to Gao King and the WF Megazord or any other compatible connector. But that combination was never shown in any media/merchandise other than the toys. So releases 1/2 of Gao Knight plus purple bison legs and Soul Bird makes no sense.

That I know of, the US versions were spot on with the diecast parts. Though the only one I have to confirm this is the Predazord/GaoHunter. All my other Gaoranger animals are the BoJ releases.
