Will Smith as Ultraman in a US Ultraman Movie?
 

This is one of those news stories that makes you stop, stare at the screen for a few minutes, maybe grab a snack, and come back to it only to realize that the story is still there.

After 16 years of legal battles, the company Chaiyo (which many believe stole and forged documents to steal the rights to Ultraman) has beaten Tsuburaya (the original creators of Ultraman) in all courts, paving the way for Chaiyo to move forward with whatever Ultraman projects they'd like. And one of them appears to be a US movie for Ultraman.

According to Nuke The Fridge, Sompote Saengduenchai is in talks to create an Ultraman movie, very similar in style to the blockbuster Pacific Rim, and wants Will Smith to play the lead role as Ultraman.

Their estimated target-release would be in 2016.

That will never happen. Will Smiths ego is too damn large to have his face covered and his big ass mouth not heard when he is in Ultraman mode.

I know nothing about this legal battle , but all that above sounds really sketchy and i wouldn't support such a project if that were true.

At this point, I have my doubts about the Ultraman film becoming an actual thing regardless of who has the rights. THIS is what I find myself having difficulty wrapping my brain around.

Franchises have survived bad movies (some even profit from that), and giving some attention to the Ultra series isn't that bad.

Plus maybe the subbers in a fit of rage decide to sub every Ultra series to show Hollywood how it's done...

Just to play devil's advocate a little…Will Smith is an Ultraman fan guys.

So if this ends up being real…I could see him being a good fit for the role, seeing as he knows the source material and everything.

Smith just isn't the big draw he used to be. Back when the first MiB movie came out and Bad Boys, he was box office gold. Everything he touched made hundreds of millions gross. But now? I give you After Earth. And Pacific Rim didn't even do that well domestically. I don't see this doing much but making fans of Ultraman go Wtf.

Will there be a Will Smith family-friendly rap theme song to go with it?

That was my biggest (despite the film being terrible as well) disappointment with MiB3! A Will Smith film just ain't the same without a rap song!
