"Toei Japan Channel" Project Canceled?
1 Attachment(s)
A few months ago we reported the possibility of Toei branching out into US networks with a new cable channel.
Now it seems the project has come to an abrupt end. Henshin Justice received notice that the selected distributor, MyGlobe TV, will not be carrying the channel as expected. Unless some new developments occur, it seems unlikely that this project will ever get off the ground. |
Well...there goes that xD

Aw poo....
|
That sucks.
|
We all knew this would crash and burn, we just couldn't answer when. But now we have our answer.
|
Honestly, from what I've heard about it, it was a pretty horrible idea anyway. A channel that you have to pay extra for that only broadcasts shows in Japanese, and then they'll only make subs if there are enough subscribers...
If they'd started out with subbed shows then this would have been great, but who's going to pay for a channel that they wouldn't even be able to fully enjoy? |
Can't say I'm surprised. It's a niche audience and also it was rather expensive for one channel. Not to mention if they were selling the channel overseas there would have been a much harsher crackdown on fansubs, which would have put us at their mercy of what they deemed worthy to give us as far as older shows go.
That being said, it would have been cool to have such a channel here in the states. |
Most people were expecting this to fail anyway so now its not coming period.
However, I still hope we get Kamen Rider and Super Sentai blu-ray and DVD subs officially from them. I'd be willing to buy offical DVDs or Blu-rays of Kamen Rider if they exist. Toei, I know you realize you have an western fanbase, because there's a good deal of collectors importing the Snetai and Rider toys and figures every year(which mind you is hundreds of dollars per dedicated collector for Bandai and Toei each year.) The western toku fanbase has gotten pretty big over the past few years thanks to the internet. And Toei doesn't even need to dub it, thus making them more money. |
Wish I could say I was surprised, but this was such a niche concept to begin with, especially with the network planning to air in raw Japanese. Honestly, I'd kind of forgotten this was even a thing.
|
Im not upset, it wasnt goin to have subs to begin with so why would I be upset?
|
I wish they'd put the effort in releasing actual sets, I'd love to own some of my favourites on DVD. But not only are subbed sets extremely rare, they are only released in the US, and are normally dodgy HK subs.
What I think a lot of these greedy suits don't realise is that most people who pirate or use fansubs or whatever else aren't evil, they are perfectly happy to pay, but if you refuse to take our money then we're going to have to find less pure channels to get our entertainment. And I'm sure someone is going to argue that 'if it isn't available to you, wait until it is' and fair point, but have you seen how much of a DVD graveyard the UK is compared to the US? I only have one life, I can't waste it waiting for something that may never come. And although there are ways around this, they are unnecessarily costly. I'm willing to pay, but not through the nose, simply because shit isn't made available in my country. I don't live in the third world, but it seems DVD distributors seem to think we are. |
I'd like to say I'm surprised, but I'm really not.

Better it drops now then after it starts. Maybe next time when they start a channel, they'll include stuff we'd actually want to see. Like some friggin' Toku.
|
I'm not surprise since I had a feeling that this would happen. Maybe Crunchyroll can try to pick up Kamen Rider and Super Sentai now.

Because if that was the price to get regularly available tokusatsu sets, I don't think I'd bother either. |

Those are mostly excuses most simply do it because it's free. |

I'm happy to pay, as I said, but I'm not happy to pay blindly. If they bring the sets across, at a fair price, leave the content alone and only add subtitles, then that is worth my cash. |
This takes me back to the days of buying DBZ on VHS cassettes. Three VHS tapes released? $75! You want the DVD's instead? $110!
|
The anime fandom has grown up over the years since kids don't have ways to watch stuff like Attack on Titan or follow the news for newer shows. The anime for kids on TV these days is Pokemon, Digimon, Dragon Ball Kai, Yu-Gi-Oh and Naruto Shippuden.

Not surprised this bombed before even getting off the ground. High price, lack of subs, not really worth it. |
Not surprised, honestly. It was doomed to fail one way or another.
|
What a shock. An insanely priced, insanely limited, insanely lacking service doesn't even get released?
|
Sad that this had to be the case, but as has been said numerous times it is not at all surprising.
I still hold out hope for an officially released, subbed bluray set of Ryuki..even if it is just a pipe dream. |
