Pacific Rim toy thread
Because, shockingly, there isn't an existing one. At least not when I searched. (there was a review and a thread about a hypothetical sequel toyline)
So yeah, who else is in on this line by NECA? I've got Gipsy, Striker, and Leatherback as Xmas presents, 18 Inch Gipsy on the way, and the titanic "18 inch" Knifehead, said to come in aorund 24 inches tall and 18 inches wide, on preorder. I've only handled Gipsy and Striker, and while both are quite limited and lacking, I've warmed up to the line. Leatherback is AWESOMELY huge, though lacks paint. Series three, however, is looking pretty sweet, with a new, larger, better proportioned Knifehead and Axehead/Tresspasser. Plus the wave also includes Coyote Tango and Cherno Alpha, two popular designs. Deffinitely excited for March. |
Excitement for most of this line has been on a decline for some time, but I've regained some hope with what little we've seen of the latest figures. I've preordered 18" Knifehead and the Kaiju Series 3 from BBTS in case they turn out to be real gems. I did however choose to pass up the 18" Gipsy due to being dissatisfied with its articulation, but it is also a bad time right now to spend $90 on a toy of that size.
All the same, the impossibility of getting an affordable Crimson Typhoon after only ever seeing it at conventions for "too much" is a real shame, and I will grab a Leatherback at some point. |
Yeah, finding Crimson is hard, especially since PR figs aren't sold in Canada. But he's also the best figure of wave one, so I don't want to give up.
I really just wish 18 inch Gipsy had bicept swivels. Everything else I can forgive since its not like I'll be posing it that much since it's so big. I may add them like I did on the 7 inch version. (which was a huge improvement) I just hope we get everyone from the movie, but especially Onibaba, Otatchi, Scunner, Raiju and Slattern. Romeo Blue, Karloff and Tacit Ronin would be nice, but they BARELY appeared. I hope they do and 18 inch Striker, as well. That's my personal favourite Jaeger. |
I finaly got a gypsy danger with swords. hes not great but not bad either.
|
Of the released characters, Gypsy's easily the weakest figure, with limited arms and legs and a pretty weak sculpt. The BD version has a nicer paint job, as the weathering's not bad.
Striker is both good and bad. He's got pretty good arms despite lacking bicep swivels. The blades are AWESOME and it's a pretty solid sculpt. (it helps Striker had more rounded edges on all his parts in the movie) The legs are better than Gypsy, but not incredibly so and have meh ankles. The torso is it's biggest weakness, lacing the impressive ab joint and neck Gipsy has. It does have a waist swivel, but it's really frighteningly stuck on most and the next is limited. Plus I REALLY wish it has a swappable chest plate to have the finisher move missile launchers. That, and the nuke you could clip/plug onto it's back. Also, I hear it's not super uncommon for the legs to break off due to the glue failing. |
If Tamashii makes SRC Jaegers and Monsterarts Kaiju for PC2 all will be rectified. NECA is using primarily PVC I think for their figures and PVC and mecha don't mix well imo. For example I used to be heavy into Bandai's MSiA! Gundam figures but lost a lot of love for them years later mainly due to their construction.
A giant Jaeger with ABS and lots of loud clicking ratchet joints, even if toyetic looking, would be right up my alley moreso than NECA's 18" line. |

The only reason I'm into Neca's line is because the Kaiju are turning out awesome, and, well... there's just no other alternative. I do wonder how SRC or something like that would handle Jaegers, since they're very worn and weathered. I'd love big gimmicky toy Jaegers, though. Gipsy with all it's weapons, Striker with flip out blades and deployable missiles, etc... |

Towards the end of their existence they were making micro-figures to put into their Voltron toys and one of their last toys was a giant Voltron for GI Joe sized Voltron pilot figures. Even if they went with 2" figures like their ID4 toyline, they could make pretty cool Jaeger and Kaiju toys. Their ID4 aliens looked close to Kaiju and looked great for their time. |
^That's not a bad idea.
I just wish SOMEBODY else had gotten the license in addition to NECA. This movie deserved a full-fledged toyline. |
I kind of wonder if the poor sales of mass-released toys based on big blockbusters (looking at you Real Steel) held off on Pacific Rim getting picked up by other companies.
The lack of articulation aside, I'm pretty pleased with most of the Series 1 and 2 figures and plan on getting Series 3. The only problem I've had so far is that the arm on my Striker Eureka snapped it's joint. :( |

Of course they were. So hopefully we get a redo of Gypsy and maybe even Striker later. |
My 18 inch Gipsy arrived today. It's REALLY sweet, especially after I touched up the paint here and there, like painting the visor edge and collar.
|
You went ahead and bought an 18 inch Gypsy in the end?

I've been after that thing forever, it's just been hard to find. But then it came up on TRU.com and I found they ship to Canada. God damn, Knifehead is gonna be huge. |

Speaking of Yipsy Yanger, I'm actually articulating her right hand as we speak. Using spare Halo Megabloks microfig arms and hip pieces, I'm ball-jointing each digit. While the thumb was a cake walk, and the pinky and ring finger pretty simple, my eyes were bigger than my stomach as I tried to FULLY articulate it, wheras the others I just left the entire digit alone. As such, tehy've been diced to peices with just the visible back of each remaining, so I'm now having to RESCULPT those two, so no Gipsy until tomorrow, which bumbs me out majorly. Needless to say, I won't be articulating the left hand anytime soon. I'm honestly considering giving up and just resculpting the hand back closed. But it'll be worth it for that little extra bit of dynamic posing, like grabbing the eventual 18 inch Knifehead. :D |
I lack of articulated hands is what kills me the most on the 18in Gipsy. Something that big, you want it to have more than just sculpted fists.
Can you give examples of other figures whose hands would be in proportion to it? For example, I've got a spare pair of Armada Unicron hands that I've really been wanting to use. |

Cybertron Primus would be a nice match I think. |

If I ever decide to get it, I think I know what I'm doing. Thanks for the info! |
Yep. Primus' hands are about the same size, but more importantly look more like Gipsy's hands. They'd need to be repainted, obviously, but theymatch the more detailed, thin-fingered look of it's real hands.
I opted for a more accurate approach: http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...psfd9990f1.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...ps3dd5cbe6.jpg I only wish I had a better place to take pictures of this MASSIVE thing. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...psfdf2a01c.jpg Some shots of the visor, collar and chest business. http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...ps57b06e71.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...pscc9270a8.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...ps6a73018e.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c5...ps0746e10a.jpg |
Bearing the risk of incurring some of the wrath I've seen in the TFW thread, what's the general consensus on these NECA figures at this point? I just watched the film, and I find myself wanting them again. Would you say they're worth going back to get, even if just to keep them MISB or something? Is the breakage a result of moving crappy joints too much or is it a shatter-on-impact GPS kind of deal?
I've been trying to avoid this line, so pardon me if those are all common knowledge. |
I'll be honest. I own these figures because of what they represent. Not because they're good toys. Series 3 looks promising but outside of the big 18" Gipsy series 1 & 2 have quite a few flaws.
At normal retail and below they may be worth it. But for the scalped prices these things were fetching for a bit, no. |

If you're buying these MISB, they'll be fine. They won't look amazing, but the cool packaging helps the in-box display value. Except on Striker, who has been known to break in the package, so watch out for him.
