Kyoryuger Final Thoughts and Poll
The series has ended. And has we spend the next week either looking forward to, or absolutely dreading, the oncoming Trains. We look back at the last year of Kyoryuger.
So I give you the Final Poll. Tell us how you felt. |
I'm going into toqger with a positive mind, nut I'm really gonna miss Kyoryuger. I think it finished just when it should have though, and aside from 1 or 2 minor gripes, it finished spectacularly
|
You all know how I feel. Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger was perfect, absolutely perfect.
|
Far from perfect, had some glorified flaws, Daigo was too perfect, but as a whole, it was good. One of the better series from the last 10 years.
|
Average.
The show had some fantastic ideas but way too much stuff bogged it down for me to find it really enjoyable. |
Overall the series is in my top favorites.
|
Even though the show is far from perfect I loved it all the way through.
Before the Show started I was really afraid it would end up being Go-Onger 2.0 but as soon as I saw the first Episode all my worries were blown away. The Show was a fun ride and a cool and really bright little adventure. There were some Episodes I wasnt so thrilled about but except for Brave 33 (onore...) I always enjoyed watching them. I loved all of the characters and even though Daigo was often shown as too perfect I cant find myself being bothered by that except for maybe two or three times it took me out of the episode. The Show has definately earned its place in my Top 05 Super Sentai Shows and even though its hard to see it go I am really looking forward to ToQger :D |
Kyoryuger, being the third dino Sentai had some great ideas, even if they were done before. There was some great plot points and characters throughout the show like Torin, Rika, Amy, Utchi, the Ulshades and of course the Deboss generals. There were a few turds like Gentle and the "new" Generals but overall we had a good cast this year.
I'll be frank here: the mecha was average this year. The one point I'm sure people will remember the most as well as being its weakest spot is Daigo, the man who out Gary Stued Kabuto AND Decede. I get they wanted to make him this "king" character but the other Kyoryugers suffered because he was this black hole that sucked in large chunks of screentime that could of been given to them instead. In the end I'll give it a 4. Apart from Gentle and Daigo we had a cool cast and the story while bumpy was enjoyable. Let's see how Dino Charge plays out, shall we? |
It's a fun show, even if it got a little bit too Daigo-centric at times. The cast is memorable and the show was pretty well paced out and written. It's up there with some of my favrioutes

Also agreed re: Mecha, but there were a few gems. I liked Pteragordon, and bragigas was cool (though the gigant form left much to be desired). I kinda liked gentle tho. |
I loved it so much, so for me, it's clearly "Excellent".
Objectively, it sure had a lot of flaws, which was mostly the stuff around Daigo (all the girls wanting him, him being a bit too perfect, etc.) and of course it did have some weaker episodes. But still, it was amazing how Riku Sanjo wrote this season ALL BY HIMSELF. The designs were funny and cool, the characters were loveable, the overall plot was good and the comedy was fun to watch. Kyoryuger may not be able to kick Goseiger from my number one favorite season-spot, but it's still close second. |
Where's the "Best Sentai Ever" choice? Because this is my favorite Sentai that I have ever watched. Granted I have only watched 4 fully through still this is amazing. All the characters are so amazing and fantastic including the villains. Everything made this show truly special to me. Also Souji is the best Green Ranger ever and my favorite Ranger ever. (Obviously judging by my username.)

It's usually easier to keep the plot coherent if you have just one writer or a small team that communicates a lot working on it. Bigger teams usually have major problems in keeping the writing uniform.
A single author usually has a better overview on his own story, he knows how his characters work and what he wants to achieve. |
It's no Go-Busters, but this show was pretty high up the list. It doesn't necessarily crack my top 5 list, but there are moments in this show that are truly memorable to me. While I know people didn't care for the Daigo does everything aspect, I just accepted it as the basic premise pretty early on and enjoyed it after that. I would say this is definitely an excellent show, and the open ending and forth coming 100 years after only increase my appreciation of this show.
|
Just "Alright."
The most apparent flaws of the series stemmed from central aspects: Daigo, the mech, and the villains. They reared their heads too often for me to just write off and the show suffered for it. But as it stands, I just think it's alright. A mediocre series that could've done worse, but simultaneously could have done a lot better. I'm not particularly excited for the upcoming movie, but I'll watch it...Some 6 months after it's released :p |
I originally posted this over in the KYORYUGER EPISODE 48 thread, but I feel like it's more appropriate here.
Well done, Kyoryuger. As a series who's mission was to take Sentai back to its roots after a couple of years of deviation, it couldn't have been more successful. Even though it was rarely groundbreaking, it cherry-picked successful elements from the past and lovingly created a self-aware sentai pastiche populated by likeable characters. There may have been a lot of elements that skewed too kiddie, and there may have been a lack of complexity among the bad guys -- but Kyoryuger's colorful, bombastic charm was instantly disarming. And it did something that few other Sentai series can claim: it managed to never be boring. I'd say the show's greatest strength was its cast. These guys cohered almost immediately, and their obvious, off-screen affection for each other contributed to a group dynamic that really sang. I don't know that I've seen a sentai cast with this much true chemistry, that has gelled quite so well. Saying the show's cast is its greatest strength may be slighting its action sequences, which were excellent as well. With so many brightly colored rangers running around, each with a very distinct fighting style, this show never lacked badassery. Even when the weekly plots dragged or annoyed, you could always count on some thrilling action. Say what you will about Koichi Sakamoto, his shows are always visually engaging. No, this show wasn't flawless. I agree with the criticism above that the conflicts between Ian & Aigaron and Utcchy & Dogold could have been mined for more material over the course of the show. I agree that sometimes it leaned a little juvenile. I agree that the villains didn't show much range. I don't think they had a very compelling motivation (or really any motivation) for wanting to destroy Earth. I think that the last 10 episodes struggled with obvious budget limitations. And, of course, there's Ovirapoo. But even still, Kyoryuger is a success. On a pure enjoyment level, it outperforms every series since the show transitioned to HD. I may ultimately prefer Gokaiger and its cast of devil-may-care sentai rebels, but I think Kyoryuger offers a more coherent and consistent experience. |
Kyoryuger is the second Sentai series that I just couldn't stand to sit through all the way. I actually made it further into Goseiger than this, but that was my first Sentai and I was trying to fill the gap left in my life by the essential cancellation of Power Rangers post-RPM. Objectively, I do think Kyoryuger was better than Goseiger (as are most forms of norovirus, to be fair); I've just seen enough Sentai now that I'm less patient when I think it's bad.
Now obviously I can't speak for the entire series as I only made it to episode 10, but I can discuss what I didn't like about it (and one of the big ones apparently was still an issue up to the finale). First and foremost, I don't think Riku Sanjo should write Sentai again. I like Sanjo a lot; the Rider shows he worked on were fun and I can't necessarily blame Fourze's shortcomings on him since he was just the assistant writer there. But if there's one thing that Kyoryuger has made clear, it's that he's still in a mode where the show has THE HERO and his support staff. I don't know if there has ever been a PR or Sentai that's so red-centric; not even Power Ranger Nickstic Force. Galvantula hit the nail on the head: Daigo is a total Mary Sue and everyone on the show bent over backwards to validate him for it. The Kyoryu Gray arc was the nail in the show's coffin for me: we had a chance for Daigo to show real vulnerability and to find something that he wasn't the best at. But nope; his only flaw was being "too perfect" and he overcame it by waiving it off with some "teamwork" bullshit. And what really sucked about the Daigo focus is that the show had some characters with a lot of potential. Ian, in particular, was being built up as a return to the Black Condor style of antagonistic team member. But he pretty much fell into line with all the rest after a couple episodes and his background arc about losing a mysterious jewel? Yeah, Daigo's wearing it as a necklace. Could I have gotten through all of that? Maybe, but the other thing that killed the show for me was that I found it aesthetically off-putting on every level. Everything was just so cartoony and childish: the monsters, the mecha, the dancing, and especially the incredibly stupid special attacks. Inflating like a balloon was dumb enough, but the fart gun... ugh. And the sound... oh dear god, the unending onslaught of loud, glaring, obnoxious sounds. If it's not the gun voice screaming at the top of its high-pitched lungs, it's the minutes of extended tweeting and blaring of the mech combinations. The nice thing about subtitles is that you can watch the show without audio, but before Kyoryuger I never wanted to actually do that. I forget who said this recently (I think it was Locke or Matrixbeast), but Kyoryuger is a show for five-year-olds. Yes, Sentai usually aims for a younger audience, but usually it seems like there's something in there for older viewers. Kyoryuger gave me nothing that felt like it was even trying to entertain someone who could tie their own shoelaces. It had a lot of potential, but it was too busy burying its nose in Daigo's rectum and screaming at the top of its lungs to take advantage of it. tl;dr version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JNuqEz_GCQ |
Switchblade's comments hit the nail on the head for me. I only made it a few episodes into Kyoryuger myself, for all the reasons outlined above. I'm glad to know I wasn't the only person who felt like this about the show.

Kyoryuger is not going to be on my list of favorites. The story is utterly formulaic and the majority of characters are underdeveloped or just plain uninteresting. And the counter to this is King Daigo, who must always be the most awesome thing on-screen at the cost of virtually any interesting development for anyone else. That got old REAL fast.
That being said, I don't find it to be an irredeemable series. The designs are excellent, the action is top-notch and there's good chemistry between the cast. And there are some hidden gems throughout; Episode 8 featuring Nobuhara & Rika stands as one of my personal favorite tokusatsu moments. So I'm voting "Average." And I can't wait to see what Saban can do with it. |
It was by far Koichi Sakamoto's best so far.
They also pulled off 10 rangers in a decent manner. I like how they tried new things while being traditional in certain aspects. Overall it was fun with so much Sentai trivia hidden inside. The Daigo and Ami love story was a tad rushed but who cares. Visually it felt like it improved on what Abaranger had. |
This season was good, could of done more with the stories and characters.
|
I'm going to miss this sentai series a lot(really looking foward to the V-Cinema) but yes I do think it's not flawless. Like many of the posts I've read, I do think the Daigo and Amy relationship felt a bit rushed and that Daigo got a bit too much attention. Nevertheless, Kyoryuger will always be in my top 10 of favorite sentai seasons.

I absolutely loved it from start to finish.

I'll post the thoughts I have from Ep 48 here:
Pros: 1) Acting: I have never seen such great acting from a Sentai show. Ever. All the tears felt genuine, and all the joy and sorrow came from the heart. The tears that Amy shed for Daigo in the finale had me close to tears too. She really know how to cry. Nossam's optimism, Souji's naivete, Yayoi's puppy love, Ian's smoothness... they are all so integrated into their character that I cannot see them outside the show without thinking that's who they are. If Nossam shows up in another show as a villain I'd be expecting him to crack a pun joke at any second. 2) Babe factor: Good looking cast all around. I can't help but gawk a bit at Amy and Yayoi's cuteness despite their young age. Ian, Souji, and Daigo aren't bad lookers too, but girls can probably vouch for them better than I do. 3) Action: So many great fight scenes. Wow! [/Amy] 4) Special F/X: Although those Dinosaurs and Mech's look very CGI, but I still like them a lot. The henshin sequence and the special attacks were mind-blowingly good. Love every second of it. 5) Deboss turn good: Love that both Candelira and Luckiroo both turned good in the end and decided to help humans. Dogold died an honorable death was pretty damn awesome too. Cons: 1) Daigo: Now don't get me wrong. Daigo is the epitome of brave and what this show is about. But he's just too PERFECT (or Pafekt like Utchy would say) and his lack of any flaws is what makes him so boring, predictable, and hard to relate to. The finale only reinforces what we already know, that Daigo is practically immaculate and nothing can even harm him. He defeated the end boss, which the whole team couldn't beat even in their Sentai forms, by himself and without going through henshin. Excuse me? I can elaborate further but I am sure you have all heard it from other forum members so I don't want to keep beating the dead horse, but the final boss fight was the worst part of the finale. 2) Daigo getting the girl, Amy: So not only was Daigo was able to beat the supposedly all-powerful end boss by himself sans costume, but he was also able to move Amy enough with the promise of strawberry parfait that she was his by the time the credits roll. I am not happy about it because I thought Souji and Amy would've been a much better fit, and also because Daigo already got everything and now the girl too? Blah. 3) Deboss monsters pretty underwhelming: Aside from the core monsters, none of the other monsters aside from the Ninja was really that good IMO. For them to keep rehashing the already dead monsters didn't help either. While I really like this show a lot, the thing that holds me back from giving it a perfect grade is Daigo. I wish the writer didn't have such a hard-on for him. Seeing him always so immaculate takes away the focus from other characters, and in a show where the cast is over 20, that's a real disservice to the fans IMO. |
Is like every villain in super sentai shoved full of 30 tons of TNT?

Anyone love the fact that the Earth's true melody is the catchy Kyoryuger theme, Vamola Kyoryuger?
|
Now...I'm looking at all this talk about Daigo (I only saw 3 episodes of Kyoryuger) so...what you guys are all saying is...he's basically Kirito from Sword Art Online...fantastic... :I

I actually dropped Kyoryuger as I think fun and being juvenile are two separate things, and this show seemed to frame every dramatic moment in such a way to drain the impact and life out of every one of them.
Lots of early episodes that I watched had great ideas, and presented interesting introductions for the characters and interesting stories to focus on them but sadly almost all of those episodes also undermined themselves at every turn by having the sense of humour of your average Chuckle Brothers episode, ramming the juvenile physical humour into every moment whether it actually worked in the context or not. Protip: it never worked. As such, by the time a gold ranger appeared and threw off the entire balance of the team, while it was still making tickle gags, floppy sword gags, blowing up like a balloon gags, fart gags. Yeah, I was just so done. However I also know there are some very vocal lovers of the show like my man Sentai - who is one of the main reasons I watched Goseiger which turned out to be my new favourite sentai - so I've been lurking and reading every post in this thread to see if maybe I just turned off right as things got good. But... I guess not, even those with a positive outlook on the show don't seem to have much nice to say when they start to really outline the details of their feelings and that is if they aren't just glossing over problems like lots of people appear to be doing. Oh well. |

My biggest issue with the finale was the half-assed final roll call: http://puu.sh/6T75K.jpg Hey where's the skirts KyoryuCyan and Violet? And, Grey and Cyan both have faded brass instead of yellow accents. Can we at least stick the landing here guys, send the season off right? |

Kyoryuger final episode is the epic episode ever!!!
but why Saban skip Go-Busters? |
I think Kyoryuger had a great start, the idea of a Sentai team that isn't united was pretty clever, the ending while rushed was nice, and I simply loved the moments when they used the music motif.
But besides that, the Daigo focus was too much at the start, I didn't get attached to the cast and felt that they barely had character development, add to that some hit or miss humor and Kyoryuger simply wasn't for me, I think it's the season I have liked the least so far. Sayonara Kyoryuger, we weren't meant for each other but you brought happiness to many people here, so kudos for that. |
