So did this show do well in Japan? It seems really unpopular with Western GARO fans and I guess I took it upon myself to assume the same was said across the ocean :lol

I think I read somewhere that it had the highest ratings of the three Garo series.

Either way, the Garo label is on it so I'm in.

I'm going to give it a watch soon because I liked it from the first two episodes and well I like the actors who play Gokai Silver and Kamen Rider Duke. lol.

It was certainly better written than the second season, but those all CGI fights...man...

To be honest, I much prefer characters who, you know, emote in a human way.

Yami o Terasu Mono was pretty great for me in that sense, so a film is rather welcomed.

What do you mean by that? I thought Kouga's character arc over the two seasons and subsequent films was one of the best out of all toku.

Don't get me wrong, I totally agree Locke. I just prefer characters with a little more, I don't know what to call it... x factor? umph? The stoic, silent, moody, as-emotive-as-a-plank thing really doesn't do it for me. And yeah, even when it's put on for the part (as it obviously was in Garo's case).

I mean there are certain levels of tsudere-ness I can handle, but sometimes that kind of character just comes off as lame for no reason and never seems to carry the story as easily as a bombastic personality can. Just personal taste there really.

Sentai analogy time: Right got me far more engaged with Toqger early on than ShinkenRed did (Even though I reeeeeeally prefer Shinkenger at the moment... but we'll see how that works out).

In terms of Kouga, I really had to push through the early moments of Garo to get the reward, if you see what I mean. The story itself can be fantastic and really well written, but with out an early hook I find it quite tough to get invested at the end of the day. The more difficult it is to get interested in a character the more likely I am to put the series down for a month or two and move on to something else.

I get what you mean. I don't usually like Kouga's style of arc that much either, but that is usually because there is no reward. As GARO was fine tuned and well realised enough, Kouga actually went somewhere, and what a great place we all ended up. It's probably the only time I've really seen that character arc done well, other than with maybe Len in Dragon Knight.

I'm not a fan of bombast at all though, Right to me just feels like Alata with all his nuance and complexity stripped away. But Alata is my all time favourite Ranger so I guess Right had no chance.

Though at only 8 episodes in with the "real story" played very, very light and vague thus far who's to say he won't gain nuance at some point? No one's really challenged his idea of imagination. I'd think they'd want to play on that as soon as possible, with a touch of coming-of-age thrown in for good measure. I would.

Alternatively the show's just gonna truck along oblivious to nuance and you'll be totally correct.

I think bombast was probably too extreme a word to use. I just mean that characters a touch more overt than Kouga grab me quicker. That's not say stoic sobs won't grab me...

Well Alata was a lot more detailed a character even eight episodes into his series. So sure it could turn around, and it'd be pretty awesome if it does, but the first fifteen or so episodes most of the time (not always true) give a good sense of how the whole show will be.

I really feel like there's something hiding beneath the surface of Toqger, perhaps more being revealed come 6go's introduction.

Garo is a different beast entirely. The shorter run necessitates tighter writing, usually.

I got that sense at the beginning of ToQ but felt the feeling grew further and further in the distance as the show became increasingly less focused. It hasn't been a bad show so far, it's a lot of fun, but the first few episodes seemed to suggest a better series than what has really transpired so far. In my opinion at least.

The original GARO shocked me by having as much filler as it did considering how short the run time was - and God that ending was bad - But the difference is that for me, pretty much every standalone episode of GARO is well crafted and memorable. Most of the week episodes in sentai I usually find are pretty throwaway.
